Daily Bible Nugget #117, Acts 20:24

The Nugget:

Acts 20:24 But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.

My Comment:

Paul received his “marching orders” directly from the Lord Jesus Christ. Paul did not let anyone or anything turn him away from his appointed task. To him, his greatest joy was to fulfill the task given him. That task he summed up in the words “to testify the gospel of the grace of God.” Paul wrote something to the effect of “Be ye followers of me, even as I am of Christ Jesus.” Paul lived a life that was a model for others to follow. I once encountered a couple of individuals who were very much against the Apostle Paul. They said Paul was a liar, because the account of his conversion in the book of Acts in chapter 9 did not match the account as he retold it later on another occasion. They claimed Paul was a heretical and renegade rabbi who should not be followed. The two individuals were not fazed by the fact that Paul wrote much of the New Testament! They were in shocked unbelief when I proved from Scripture that Peter sanctioned Paul’s writings as inspired Scripture. They complained that Paul whose original name was Saul had changed his name, they supposed for nefarious reasons. They were of the opinion that Paul was not really an apostle, but proclaimed himself to be what he was not. My wife silenced that claim most effectively by reading aloud to the Bible study group from Acts 9:15-16, “But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel: For I will shew him how great things he must suffer for my name’s sake.” Paul had a Divine calling. Paul had a miraculous conversion to Christ on the Damascus Road. That conversion, considered by itself, is sufficient to prove the divine origin and authority of true, Biblical Christianity. Some of the folks that follow the “Hebrew Roots Movement” like the two visitors to the Bible study need to get their Bibles out and study them for themselves, instead of following the Siren song of the leaders of a false cult.

Daily Bible Nugget #116, Acts 20:20-21

The Nugget:

Acts 20:20 And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publickly, and from house to house,
Acts 20:21 Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

My Comment:

Paul tells us how he conducted his ministry. He did not hold back from them the truth. We need pastors and Sunday school teachers and all Christians to follow Paul’s example. Many times over the years I’ve encountered the attitude, don’t teach doctrine. Don’t teach apologetics. Keep it simple. The end result is that even people who believe they are saved have some very mistaken understandings about what the Bible teaches. I just heard on the radio (I tuned in to Pastor Emory Moss, of Strictly Biblical Ministries, radio program Bible Talk) moments ago that 25% of Christians who identify themselves as Evangelical and born again say they believe everyone is going to heaven. Such persons need to read what Jesus said about that in Matthew 7:14 where Jesus plainly said “few there be that find it.” Paul conducted his ministry in public and from house to house. One time a Jehovah’s Witness told me that I must not have the truth because if I truly believed that I did, I would be going house to house like he did. I said, sometime in the summer I would like to invite you to accompany me as I do my outreach, and if you are willing, I’ll accompany you. He never accepted the challenge. I decided not to let him in on any of the strategies I used, for I did not want to help advance his mistaken message. But in fact, since I was a teacher in the neighborhood school, and I lived in the neighborhood, more people knew me than knew him. It turns out that his future wife was a student in my English class at the time who sat in the very front row! Furthermore, the people that knew me welcomed me to visit them, so I had an open door. In fact, a number of the people that knew me would chide me because I did not come around to their home more often. I did not push the Bible on them. Some of them asked me to come to their homes and explain and teach the Bible, and answer their questions. Even some Roman Catholic parents were eager to have me share about the Bible, because they saw the impact the Bible had upon their own children in my classes in public school. It was at this time when I had a small part in reaching out to one of my students at Cass Technical High School in my English 6 Early American Literature course, now Pastor Emory Moss. I’m sure Paul did a better job than I did. In simple terms, Paul’s message was repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. That message is still valid, and much needed, today.

Daily Bible Nugget #115, James 5:19-20

The Nugget:

James 5:19 Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him;
James 5:20 Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.

My Comment:

James discusses the need to bring wandering sheep back to the fold. He is addressing brethren, so he is addressing true believers. He speaks, regarding the brethren he is addressing, about the potential of “any of you,” so again, he is speaking about believers. If any of the believers err from the truth, should another believer convert him, that act shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins. I believe the seriousness of this issue requires that we regard saving a soul, that is, a person, from death pertains to saving them from spiritual death. Erring from the truth means to turn from true faith in Christ, and to fall into either doctrinal or moral apostasy. James thus teaches the very real possibility of apostasy of believers. He also shares the solution to the problem: one must reach out to those who have fallen into error and help them to get back to the truth. If any one is successful in such a venture, James states they will have saved a soul from death, and shall have hidden a multitude of sins. Not every Christian feels called to such a ministry. But the better prepared you are through careful study of the Bible, the more likely that God can use you to His glory in such an important and vital service.

Gr. ek. Out from translates the force of ek, an ablative of separation; the idea is that of being in something and moving out of it, then away from, i.e., out from the “wayward way” and “death” (cf. Jam 1:15 and note). The plain teaching of Scripture is that a Christian may forfeit a saving relationship with God (cf. Mt 18:32, 33, 34, 35; Lk 8:13; 12:42, 43, 44, 45, 46; Jn 15:1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6; Ga 1:6; 5:4; 6:1; 1 Ti 4:1; 6:10; He 3:12, 14; 6:4, 5, 6; 10:38, 39; 12:15; 2 P 2:20, 21, 22). Sinning religionists teach “safety and security for the Father’s child even while he is sinning” (Chafer). This is because they do not believe in salvation from sin to begin with. Thus, Horton can say “even though the believer is still sinful, he or she is judged by God as blameless.” This is grounded in a false view of the Atonement—that Christ was punished (cf. Ro 8:3; 2 Co 5:21; Ga 3:13 and notes), resulting in salvation concepts on the level of the Law (Ro 2:13; Ep 1:7). Atonement by punishment cannot produce regenerative change—deliverance from all sin, renewal after the image of God—thus necessitating the unbiblical supplement of security while sinning! (Cf. 1 Co 5:5 and notes). The Atonement is the basis of all salvation concepts, the source of all God’s saving activity. Thus, an atonement theory that is false to the Scriptures yields erroneous ideas about the nature of salvation, Christian practice, the Judgment; and generates an environment of false assurance among its adherents. Note the contrasting effects of penal atonement with Priestly-Sacrificial Atonement: (1) Penal atonement, i.e., atonement by punishment, yields legal justification—the “sinner is freed through faith from the penalty of his sin,” but not delivered from the sin that necessitated the penalty. That God declares the “sinning Christian righteous while sinning” shows the non-regenerative nature of this false atonement theory, and that it is equal to the Law in effect (see note at He 10:4); (2) Priestly-Sacrificial Atonement yields the day of Grace (cf. Titus 2:12 and note), in which sinners are made righteous (cf. Ro 1:17 and note), and thus freed from the penalty of sin because freed from sin! (3) Penal atonement yields righteousness considered, imputed, declared; (4) Priestly-Sacrificial Atonement yields righteousness imparted, infused. (5) Atonement by punishment yields legal righteousness, an “as if”; (6) Atonement by bloodshed and death (cf. He 13:12 and note) yields regenerative righteousness, transformation, a new creation! (Cf. 2 Co 5:17; Ga 6:15 and notes). (7) In the penal atonement theory, when a man is said to be born again, he is born the same old man he used to be, still sinning in thought, word, and deed daily, still bearing the fallen image of Adam; (8) Priestly-Sacrificial Atonement yields a birth from above (Jn 3:3, 5-6 and notes), in which the old man is stripped off and the new man is put on— “the one having been created in conformity with God in righteousness and holiness of truth” (Ep 4:24; cf. Ro 8:29; Col 3:9, 10). (9) In the penal atonement theory, the blood of Christ leaves man where the blood of the Levitical animal left him—still in sin (cf. He 10:4 and note). Thus sins are passed over, i.e., pardoned, as under the law; still awaiting a day of deliverance; (10) In Biblical Atonement, i.e., Priestly-Sacrificial Atonement, the blood of Christ is efficacious to remove all sin now and cleanse from every conceivable unrighteousness (1 J 1:9; cf. Mt 1:21; Jn 1:29; Ac 13:38; Ep 1:7; He 9:26; 10:18). The day of salvation has come—deliverance in the here and now! Since Christ the Savior actually saves, if a Christian “…may go astray from the truth…” the sin brings forth death (Jam 1:15; see note). A system that requires security while sinning betrays the absence of the Savior (LNT, fn d). the error. Gr. planē (S#4106g, Ep 4:14). There are many who live in accord with the outward ethical standards of life who turn away from the knowledge of Jesus, who go after the strange gods of gold, of “knowledge falsely so-called,” of materialistic monism, of “New Thought,” of “Christian Science,” of “Russellism,” of any new fad in science or philosophy or religion, of any new form of old wives’ fables that lead men astray (Robertson, Studies). Daily Bible Nugget #114, Proverbs 11:30

The Nugget:

Proverbs 11:30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.

My Comment:

This verse has been applied to the subject of soul winning–leading people to accept Christ as Savior. The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life. That is applied to the fact that bringing a person to accept Christ makes it possible for them to have eternal life. Those engaged in doing that are deemed wise. It surely is a matter of looking forward to heaven and its rewards, and how rewarding it will be to see people in heaven, there in part due to our prayers and even our direct influence or our effort to reach them with the Gospel.

For those who desire to DIG DEEPER into this subject:

Daily Bible Nugget #113, John 15:16

The Nugget:

John 15:16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

My Comment:

As I was first taught about this verse, “the fruit that remains” has reference to those we have won to Christ. This verse was related to Proverbs 11:30, “The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.” In any case, it is a wonderful experience to be used of the Lord to lead another to faith in Him. Apparently only a small percentage of Christian believers have had this experience today. Jesus said, “The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest” (Luke 10:2). Many of us may think this is strictly the job of Christian professionals, like pastors and missionaries. As I read the New Testament, I think the practice in the Church of the New Testament was to involve every believer to reach out to those around them. If more people were brought to genuine faith in the Lord and became Bible reading, Bible studying, and Bible practicing Christians, the world would be much better for it.

Daily Bible Nugget #112, 2 Timothy 2:15

The Nugget

2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

My Comment

To be a workman that doesn’t need to be ashamed, we must exercise diligence and care to be approved in God’s sight as we carefully handle the Word of truth. The rendering of the King James Version, which was about the only English translation widely used when I was young, led most readers to think it has reference to study the Bible carefully. It does apply to that, as proven by the final clause, “rightly dividing the word of truth.” The last portion of this verse was itself grossly misinterpreted by many readers as a proof-text in support of Dispensationalism. Back then and in many circles today the Bible was divided into seven dispensations. It made for a helpful teaching outline, but the Bible itself furnishes no internal clue that God intended us to divide the Bible that way. It has led to considerable error, as when some dispensationalists teach that the Lord’s prayer in Matthew 6 is not for Christians to pray today. Sometimes Dispensational interpreters engage more in “wrong subtraction” than in “right division.” I was thoroughly disabused of such a mistaken notion when I read James W. Thirtle’s book on The Lord’s Prayer, a work published in 1915. Dispensationalists get hung up on the clause in the Lord’s Prayer, “forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors,” asserting that is not the basis or premise upon which forgiveness is based in this dispensation of Grace, or this Church Age. Therefore, Christians should not pray that prayer. Thirtle points out that the expression Jesus used alludes to Deuteronomy 15, where in the manner that debts were forgiven in Israel every seven years is the same manner we are to forgive those who have trespassed against us–immediately, with no strings attached, and with the right attitude. Once again, that last clause, “rightly dividing the word of truth,” is most significant. Among the reasons there are so many differences of opinion about what the Bible teaches is that those who are reading the Bible are often not “rightly dividing” it. That is, they fail to interpret the Bible according to the rules of interpretation, and they fail to take into account all the evidence in the Bible before they assert their mistaken claim about what it says. Such careless handling of God’s Word can lead to teaching what is actually false doctrine and even heresy. But there is no excuse for that here, for I have spelled out in simple terms yet I trust in sufficient detail just what the rules of interpretation are in the October, 2010 archives listed to the right on this page. In many discussions featured here I have demonstrated in detail how to apply those rules to answer mistaken interpretations of the Bible.

Vine notes the word is from orthos, straight, and temnō, to cut, “the meaning passed from the idea of cutting or dividing, to the more general sense of rightly dealing with a thing. What is intended here is not dividing Scripture from Scripture, but teaching Scripture accurately” (Expository Dictionary, vol 1, p. 327). The word occurs in the Septuagint at Pr 3:6 and Pr 11:5, where the English has “direct.” The reference is not to dividing up Scripture into dispensations, and applying to ourselves only what is allegedly valid for this dispensation. Neither is it dividing Scripture on the basis of to whom it was originally addressed or spoken of, the Jew, the Gentile, or the Church of God (citing 1Co 10:32, pressing this text far beyond the bounds of its legitimate meaning and application in context), for all Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable (**2Ti 3:16). While all Scripture may indeed not be about us, it is all for our learning (+*Rom 15:4), and we have no right by such arbitrary distinctions to eliminate from our careful consideration whole sections of the Word of God. The emphasis is not upon “right division” (which in the practice of some is “wrong subtraction,” 1Th 4:2 n), but on “correct interpretation.” In context Paul is directing Timothy not to strive about words to the subverting of the hearers, but to handle the Word of God accurately so as to teach them the truth. +**2Ti 3:16. Daily Bible Nugget #111, 1 Timothy 1:7

The Nugget:

2 Timothy 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

My Comment:

I was introduced to serious cross reference Bible study when I was assigned to look up the cross references to this passage, 2 Timothy 1:7, by using the original Treasury of Scripture Knowledge, in Miss Ellen Groh’s How to Study the Bible class in vacation Bible school at Highland Park Baptist Church, in August of 1954, if I remember correctly. I was particularly interested in and immediately impressed with the references for the phrase at the end of the verse, “and of a sound mind.” My new-found interest in the Bible began to arouse concern on the part of my parents. They told tales of people they knew who had gone overboard by becoming too interested in spiritual things. I did not contradict them at the dinner table one-way conversations, but I personally felt that on this point they were likely mistaken. Reading the cross references for 2 Timothy 1:7 gave me strong assurance as a young person that I was indeed on the right track spiritually. That final phrase is not the only message contained in this short verse. All of it is good, and worth careful study to strengthen our faith.

Daily Bible Nugget #110, 1 John 5:11-13

The Nugget:

1 John 5:11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
1 John 5:12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
1 John 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

My Comment:

John who wrote the Gospel of John wrote this short letter found near the end of the New Testament called 1 John. It has just five chapters. It is a most important book to read repeatedly. John says “If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son” (1 John 5:9). We surely do receive the witness of men. If we did not, we could not have history. We probably could not have a news report, or our legal system, or our financial system. So we do receive the witness of men. John further declares, “He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself; he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son” (1 John 5:10). It is very serious business not to believe the record God has given us of His Son. If we do not believe the record, we make God a liar. Yet the Bible says God cannot lie (Titus 1:2). Non-believers and unbelievers are in serious trouble. So are atheists and agnostics. God has told us that He has given to us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He that has the Son has life. He that has not the Son has not life. John tells us he has written these things so we can know we have eternal life. That being the case, those who teach that it is not possible to know in this life that we actually have eternal life are totally mistaken. We can know that we now have eternal life. If we have received Christ, if we believe on Him for our salvation, we have eternal life now, in this life. That is the clear testimony of the Bible. To suggest otherwise is to contradict or deny what God has plainly declared. And that is to make God a liar. We can surely rejoice that God has made it possible for us to believe on His Son, and that believing on Him gives us eternal life.

Such a view does not accord with those Scriptures which affirm such assurance of the individual, such as Ga 2:20n, and 2 T 1:12. may know. Gr. oida, Jn 8:55n. This is certainly one of the clearest statements in Scripture affirming that we may know in this life that we now have everlasting life—we are not left to wait until we die to discover whether we have eternal life or not. ver. 10. 1 J 1:1, 2. Yet, this assurance is grounded upon the individual believer possessing the marks of a true believer discussed throughout this epistle. A true believer lives (1) in constant fellowship with God, 1 J 1:8. 2:2. (2) true to the Gospel, 1 J 2:24. (3) with love for others, 1 J 3:18, 19. 4:7. Daily Bible Nugget #109, Psalm 32:5

The Nugget:

Psalm 32:5 I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah.

My Comment:

Here is a verse from the Old Testament about forgiveness and how to obtain it. I think it is just as clear as 1 John 1:9 in the New Testament. Either passage teaches clearly that forgiveness can be obtained by going directly to God in the manner this verse describes. The Psalmist was certain that he received forgiveness. On the same basis, we can be certain too.

Daily Bible Nugget #108, Psalm 66:18

The Nugget:

Psalm 66:18 If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me:

My Comment:

This verse tells us one reason why God does not answer some prayers. The subject of unanswered prayer makes for an interesting and instructive study. I give the cross references to the other verses I have found about unanswered prayer below under “Digging Deeper.” Reading this verse in context as translated into modern English by the Contemporary English Version or CEV may help make it clearer:

Psalm 66:16 All who worship God, come here and listen; I will tell you everything God has done for me.
Psalm 66:17 I prayed to the Lord, and I praised him.
Psalm 66:18 If my thoughts had been sinful, he would have refused to hear me.
Psalm 66:19 But God did listen and answered my prayer.
Psalm 66:20 Let’s praise God! He listened when I prayed, and he is always kind.

It helps when reading the Bible to notice such a striking statement as Psalm 66:18. Those are the kind of verses I like to find out what else the Bible says on this subject. One of the best ways to study this further is to read the cross references for this verse. I suspect you will find I give more cross references below than you will find in any other Bible study resource. The Bible is its own best commentary. If you have a desire to investigate the subject of unanswered prayer, take some time and look up the passages found elsewhere in the Bible that pertain to this subject.

For those who desire to DIG DEEPER into this subject:

(1) Consult the cross references given in Nelson’s Cross Reference Guide to the Bible on page 583 for Psalm 66:18.

(2) Consult the cross references given in The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge on page 631 or in Logos 5 Bible software for Psalm 66:18.
