Daily Bible Nugget #108, Psalm 66:18

The Nugget:

Psalm 66:18 If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me:

My Comment:

This verse tells us one reason why God does not answer some prayers. The subject of unanswered prayer makes for an interesting and instructive study. I give the cross references to the other verses I have found about unanswered prayer below under “Digging Deeper.” Reading this verse in context as translated into modern English by the Contemporary English Version or CEV may help make it clearer:

Psalm 66:16 All who worship God, come here and listen; I will tell you everything God has done for me.
Psalm 66:17 I prayed to the Lord, and I praised him.
Psalm 66:18 If my thoughts had been sinful, he would have refused to hear me.
Psalm 66:19 But God did listen and answered my prayer.
Psalm 66:20 Let’s praise God! He listened when I prayed, and he is always kind.

It helps when reading the Bible to notice such a striking statement as Psalm 66:18. Those are the kind of verses I like to find out what else the Bible says on this subject. One of the best ways to study this further is to read the cross references for this verse. I suspect you will find I give more cross references below than you will find in any other Bible study resource. The Bible is its own best commentary. If you have a desire to investigate the subject of unanswered prayer, take some time and look up the passages found elsewhere in the Bible that pertain to this subject.

For those who desire to DIG DEEPER into this subject:

(1) Consult the cross references given in Nelson’s Cross Reference Guide to the Bible on page 583 for Psalm 66:18.

(2) Consult the cross references given in The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge on page 631 or in Logos 5 Bible software for Psalm 66:18.

(3) Lacking access to those two resources, consult the cross references for this passage as I have developed them as given below:

Psalm 66:18. If I regard iniquity. Note: “If I have seen (räeethee) iniquity in my heart,”—if I have known it was there, and encouraged it—if I pretended to be what I was not,—if I loved iniquity, while I professed to pray and be sorry for my sin,—”then the LORD would not have heard me.” T#1380, T#1801.
