Daily Bible Nugget #60, Titus 3:5

The Nugget:

Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

My Comment:

The basic ideas in this verse are probably quite clear to every reader. The finer details of the last portion of the verse are very instructive and less known to general readers of the Bible. As one of my memory verse texts for the plan of salvation, I concentrated on the first portion of the verse. Paul affirms that we are not saved by our works. God saved us according to His mercy. None of us could ever be good enough to merit salvation. By washing of regeneration Paul is speaking of the regenerative or transforming change brought about in our life when we believe on Christ. That regeneration is wrought in us by the “renewing of the Holy Ghost.” A truly saved person has a transformed character that through the work of the Holy Spirit produces the fruit of the Spirit described by Paul in Galatians 5:22-23.

Sōzō is a radical deliverance from something. Here it is deliverance by a washing, by means of rebirth and renewal, all described as the work of the Holy Spirit. He delivers us refers to full salvation. Note that salvation is viewed in Scripture as initial (Ac 16:31), completely-entirely (1 Th 5:23), progressive (Jn 3:16), and ultimate (1 C 15:53, 54) [Lavender NT, fn m]. Ps 119:146. Is 33:22. Washing is a picture of the cleansing work of the Holy Spirit, and has nothing to do with ritual, ceremony, or baptism by water (Ro 6:3n). This washing is real, transformational, and life-giving. It is the work of the Holy Spirit described as regenerative, not simply birth but a re-birth (Jn 3:3-6), or restoration to the former state—the image of God (Ge 1:26, 27; *5:3; Ep 4:24; Col 3:9, 10), further described as predestinated to similarities of the image of His Son (Ro 8:29) [Lavender NT, fn n). Further, anakainōseōs is another mighty declaration: compounded of ana = back, again + kainōsis = renewal: renew, complete change, i.e., it is a present transformation in which the renewed believer passes over into that former state of holiness before the Fall! What a mighty work of the Holy Spirit. Kainōsis means renew all by itself, the preposition ana added, making anakainōseōs emphatically state the transformation or the passage to the former state of holiness. Adding the preposition ana helps the noun kainōsis affirm more vividly and emphatically the newness or renewal to the former state (Lavender NT, fn o). Ps +*51:10. 104:30. Is 43:7. Jn 1:13. Ac 2:17. Daily Bible Nugget #59, James 2:10

The Nugget:

James 2:10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

My Comment

Jesus responded to a man who asked what he must do to inherit eternal life that surely he knew the Commandments, referring to the Ten Commandments. Jesus then named some of them. Of course you know that when Jesus listed the Ten Commandments He never includes the Fourth Commandment about keeping the Sabbath Day holy. Yet we know that even the Old Testament teaches no one has kept the Ten Commandments. This fact is reflected in Proverbs 20:9 and Ecclesiastes 7:20, two of the Bible Nugget passages I’ve already given pertaining to the plan of salvation. Yet in Leviticus 18:5 God states that if a person keeps the law, he will live. Therefore, that is an option or one way to receive everlasting life or salvation, if a person could do it. Jesus did it. But no one else has done so. The problem with that means of receiving eternal life is that it is unachievable. James tells us that if we keep all the commandments, but violate just one, we are guilty of all. So for any who may think that because they keep the Ten Commandments as best they can that this will qualify them for heaven and eternal life, clearly this is a very mistaken opinion–though that is what many people believe if you ask them. Rather than keeping the Ten Commandments to deserve eternal life, we are taught by both the Old Testament (Genesis 15:6) and the New Testament (Romans 10:13) that it is faith in the promise of God, not what we do for God, that brings eternal life.

Daily Bible Nugget #58, Proverbs 14:12-13

The Nugget:

Proverbs 14:12 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
Proverbs 14:13 Even in laughter the heart is sorrowful; and the end of that mirth is heaviness.

My Comment:

There are many different opinions about how to get to heaven. Different churches teach some very different ideas about how to be saved, or whether or not people can be sure in this life that they are saved. Individuals often have their own opinion. But as a memory verse teaching about the plan of salvation, the point of these two verses (Proverbs 14:12, 13) is that what we may believe may seem right to us, but though we may be very sincere, it is possible to be sincerely wrong. We can even make jokes about the matter, and suppose the subject is not important. But if we turn out to be wrong, our jokes and our disdain for the subject will be no laughing matter. To be certain we are right about these things, we must compare what we believe with what the Bible actually teaches. I suspect if people would start reading and studying their Bibles apart from denominational literature they might be very surprised by what they learn.

Daily Bible Nugget #57, Isaiah 55:7-8

The Nugget:

Isaiah 55:7 Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
Isaiah 55:8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.

My Comment

These two verses tell us quite clearly what a person must do to get right with God. The verses also contain encouraging promises of God’s mercy and pardon. But we have to come to God on His terms, not ours. His thoughts are not our thoughts, and our ways are not His ways. I’ve noticed that certain denominations or churches engage in what I call religious rationalism. Their doctrine is formulated not strictly on what the Bible itself teaches, but rather it is based on what they think God ought to do. This is seen, for example, in those who deny the doctrine of eternal punishment or conscious existence after death. But we must not try to teach God what He must do to be “fair” when He has already very clearly declared what He will do and why in the Bible. Jesus was a friend of publicans and sinners in His day. If you are tempted to suppose you have sinned so much that Jesus will not receive you, that would be to follow your thoughts instead of His thoughts. He said He came not to call the righteous but sinners to repentance. Jesus promises He will not turn away anyone who comes to Him (John 6:37).

Daily Bible Nugget #56, Romans 6:23

The Nugget:

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

My Comment:

Wages are what we may earn. A gift, especially the gift of God, is freely given. You cannot earn eternal life. Eternal life is the gift of God through Jesus Christ our Lord. What kind of death does Paul reference here when he writes “the wages of sin is death”? As in Genesis 2:17, the death referred to is primarily spiritual death, secondarily physical death, and ultimately the Second Death (Revelation 20:6). By no means is the Second Death annihilation! Annihilation has been discussed thoroughly on this site before, and soundly refuted. Upon resurrection (John 5:29) the bodies of both saved and unsaved are restored to life, are rejoined to their spirits which are continuously conscious entities which do not die, but experience their ultimate future reward for all eternity (Matthew 25:46). It is by far the best thing to receive the gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ by believing on Him. The other option is really unthinkable and permanently unpleasant.

Daily Bible Nugget #55, Isaiah 59:1-2

The Nugget:

Isaiah 59:1 Behold, the LORD’S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:
Isaiah 59:2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

My Comment:

The Lord is listening, awaiting our prayer. He can and will hear. He is ready to save each of us. A possible hindrance that blocks our response to His call is that our sin separates us from God. Our sins have hid his face from us. That is why he will not hear. Now that does not mean that if you have sin in your life that you cannot come to Him! No one can become good enough to deserve salvation. Rather, we must repent and confess our sins and ask Him to save us, and He will.

Daily Bible Nugget #54, Isaiah 64:6

The Nugget:

Isaiah 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

My Comment:

This is one of the clearest and strongest statements in the Bible telling us that our own righteousness amounts to nothing in the sight of God. While God surely wants everyone to be righteous, no one can be righteous in their own strength. To be righteous, we must trust in Jesus Christ as our Savior and receive eternal life by continuing to believe and obey Him.

Daily Bible Nugget #53, Proverbs 20:9

The Nugget:

Proverbs 20:9 Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?

My Comment:

This verse always impressed me as a good verse to know by heart. It is another Old Testament reference to an important salvation issue: none of us can make our heart clean, or make ourselves pure from our sin. It used to be that if you would ask a random person what they would tell God if He should ask them the question, “Why should I let you into my heaven?” they would respond “Because my good deeds outnumber by bad deeds,” or, “I’m not as bad as most people I know,” or “I tried to live by the Ten Commandments,” or, “I did my best to love others.” From what the Bible teaches, all of these responses are unsatisfactory. Proverbs 20:9 tells us none of us are good enough to deserve heaven or eternal life no matter how good we try to be.

Daily Bible Nugget #52, Romans 3:23

The Nugget:

Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

My Comment:

As well known and basic as this verse is, I suspect we do not fully understand what it teaches. Clearly it teaches that all have sinned. We know from other Scripture verses that God will not allow sin in His presence, or in His heaven. Those are important concepts, because if one does not know he or she is lost, he or she will not understand the need for being saved. Paul tells us that we have all come short of the glory of God. But for many of us, the words “come short of the glory of God” are like a foreign language, even though we read them in English. One way to better understand what Paul meant is to study out and read all the cross references given for this part of the verse. I have furnished below more cross references for this clause than you are likely to find anywhere else. The Bible does explain itself.

Daily Bible Nugget #51, Romans 5:12

The Nugget:

Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

My Comment:

Here is a New Testament verse that states that all have sinned. It also tells us the consequence of sin entering the world by one man, Adam. Death passed upon all men. In all likelihood, the “death” mentioned in this verse is a reference to spiritual death. Adam and Eve did not die physically the very day they sinned in the garden of Eden. Rather, they immediately experienced spiritual death, as evidenced by their immediate estrangement from God, witnessed by the fact that they attempted to hide from Him. The death God threatened was two-fold: immediate spiritual death, and imminent physical death. In any case, we are all dead spiritually until we receive the gift of eternal life by believing on Jesus Christ. If you who may read this are not sure that you now have everlasting life in Christ, I trust you will continue reading and even memorizing these verses about salvation. Once you have read and understood them all, you will know if you are saved if you don’t know already, and you will know what to do to be saved. That knowledge, once you have it, can be used of God to help you win others to a saving knowledge of Christ.
