The Nugget:

1 Peter 2:25 For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.

My Comment:

Peter makes reference to the last verse I cited in this list of Bible memory verses for the plan of salvation, Isaiah 53:6. A change took place in those to whom Peter wrote his letter. They were no longer going astray, for they have come to the Shepherd and Bishop of their souls. The Shepherd and Bishop of their souls is the Lord Jesus Christ. The Bible, and Jesus Christ Himself, invites us to come to Christ. That is something we must do to be saved. It is something easy to do. Jesus said in John 6:37 that he welcomes each person who will come to Him, with the promise that He will not cast out any who come to Him.

Daily Bible Nugget #69, Isaiah 53:6

The Nugget:

Isaiah 53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

My Comment:

Notice the first word: All. That includes everyone. We have gone astray. We have each one turned to his or her own way. But notice the solution that the Lord has provided: God has laid on Him, the Messiah, the iniquity of us all. Jesus Christ is the Messiah. He went to the Cross to bear our sins. He is our Atonement. He is both the Sacrifice and the Priest. Atonement is the provision God made for us, for everyone. But the benefit is reserved for those who claim it, who receive it, by believing on Christ as their Savior from sin.

The Nugget:

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

This verse is an important verse to memorize as part of the list of verses I have been giving that pertain to the plan of salvation. Jesus Himself said He is the way, and no man can come to the Father except through Him. We cannot get to God through our baptism, our church, or our good works. We can only come to the Father through Jesus. That is why it is important to read the Bible for ourselves, particularly the New Testament to start with, so we can get better acquainted with our Lord Jesus Christ. That is also why it is important to be able to share the Gospel message with others. Learning a set of Bible memory verses will equip you to share the Gospel with others, even when you may not have immediate access to your Bible. Many people today have a vague acquaintance with the Gospel, but they have not heard the truth of the Gospel explained to them in a way they can understand it to know how to respond. The job of sharing the Gospel is not just the job of your pastor, it is the job of every true Christian.

Daily Bible Nugget #67, John 10:1

The Nugget:

John 10:1 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.

My Comment:

It may have once been true that all roads lead to Rome, at least in the time of the Roman roads. But not all roads (nor all religions!) lead to heaven! Jesus said He is the door. Therefore, he that does not enter by that door, but climbs up some other way, Jesus said is a thief and a robber. We don’t look too kindly upon a thief or robber, especially when we are the victim. When it comes to receiving eternal life, the only way God has authorized us to receive His gift is through His Son. And as for those who claim that God does not have a Son–guess what, they are prime examples in our day of the thief and robber Jesus talked about. But there are other thieves and robbers out there. They include those who deny the Trinity, those who deny the Deity of Christ, those who deny the Divine inspiration of the Bible, and those who add any other authoritative source of spiritual knowledge, such as Tradition, additional revelations by supposedly inspired prophets or prophetesses, or other supposedly inspired books, and the like. The full truth about God and salvation are to be found only in one place–right between the covers of your Bible. Anyone pointing you to anywhere else is climbing up some other way.

Daily Bible Nugget #66 Acts 4:12

The Nugget:

Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

My Comment:

Salvation is only through belief in Jesus Christ. Peter stated this most clearly in this verse. It couldn’t be any plainer than this. God Himself authenticated the ministry and message of Jesus Christ by raising Jesus from the dead on the third day. No other faith can boast of a historically documented stupendous miracle like this, the bodily resurrection of Christ. In context, a lame man had just been healed. The religious authorities of that day were highly displeased, because the miracle of healing was done in public. No one could deny it took place. The authorities asked Peter and the disciples, “By what power, or by what name, have ye done this?” Peter answered, “By the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand before you whole.” No church, no religious denomination, no religious organization can save us. Salvation is only through faith in Jesus Christ.

Daily Bible Nugget #65, John 3:3

The Nugget:

John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

My Comment:

No one can enter heaven or see the kingdom of God without first being born again. The expression “born again” may also be expressed “born from above.” Many people believe they are “born again” because they have been baptized in or with water. This could not be true in this context, for Jesus was not schooling Nicodemus, a leading Pharisee and teacher of the Jews, about ritual water baptism. Jesus was surprised that Nicodemus was not aware of this teaching from his knowledge of the Bible. Jesus had reference to the prophecy of Ezekiel (Ezekiel 36:25-27). Ezekiel makes it clear that being born again is the work of the Holy Spirit, and so does Jesus in the immediate context of John 3:5. The Holy Spirit produces the work of the new birth in us when we believe in Christ for salvation. When this work of grace wrought in us by the Holy Spirit takes place, He produces the fruit of the Spirit in us as a result of the regenerative change or transformation that takes place in us. Jesus said we must be born again. It is not optional.

Galatians 2:16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

My Comment:

Once again, the Bible clearly tells us that we cannot get to God by the works of the law–by keeping the Ten Commandments, or any other rules. We are saved by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. You will have noticed that in this listing of memory verses for the plan of salvation as it is given in the Bible that this issue of commandment keeping has been brought forward several times. When showing someone just what it is that the Bible teaches about an issue, it is helpful to show the truth as it appears in several places in the Bible. That should help to get the point across. Anyone who will take the effort to memorize the verses I have been sharing will be equipped to share faith in Christ with someone else, should the opportunity arise.

Made righteous is from dikaioō and commonly translated as “justified.” The issue here is between Law and grace, between the blood of the Levitical animal and the blood of the Son of God, and between the effect of each: to justify or to make righteous. There is necessarily contextual and dispensational diversity in meaning with respect to these terms. Accordingly, the meaning of dikaioō cannot be to justify under both Law and grace. Daily Bible Nugget #63, Romans 3:20

The Nugget:

Romans 3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

My Comment:

If you want to see a contradiction in the Bible, here is one. Romans 3:20 states that by the deeds of the law shall no flesh be justified. But if we look back to Romans 2:13 we read that “the doers of the law shall be justified.” I suspect that modern English translations of the Bible generally have not cleared up this seeming contradiction. That is the reason there is such a need for a new translation that carefully follows the Greek text, is translated with awareness of dispensational distinctions, that does not suppress the grammatical distinctions so unique to the Greek language and crucial for proper understanding of what the authors meant when the words of the New Testament were penned. No currently available English translation does all that. Young’s Literal Translation comes the closest, but like the rest of our English translations, it falls short of presenting the salvation vocabulary given in the Greek text. All past and current English translations fail at this crucial point. But as a salvation memory verse, Romans 3:20 does make it clear that no one can be saved by keeping the law, including obeying the Ten Commandments. If we cannot get to heaven by being good, what must we do to get to heaven and have eternal life? The answer, in brief, is that we must believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. But this language may well be almost meaningless to those immersed in contemporary culture. Probably the best way to overcome this gap in understanding is to become immersed in the Gospel of John, which was written to enable anyone to have eternal life by believing what it teaches. John asserts that he wrote his Gospel so that people would believe on the name of the Son of God, and that believing they would have eternal life. Even that language is obscure to the modern unchurched individual, but by reading the context of the Gospel of John, the meaning will become plain.

The Nugget:

Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Ephesians 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

My Comment:

This verse clarifies just what place works have in salvation: none. But it does not stop there. Once we are saved through faith, we are His workmanship. He creates us in Christ Jesus “unto good works.” He has ordained that once we are saved through faith, good works will be a pattern for our life, and of our life. As a practical matter, the way this works out in practice or experience is that a saved person will bear the fruit of the spirit through the work of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22, 23). It is not something we manufacture for ourselves. These are important principles to understand from the Bible, God’s Word. As noted before, these principles contradict normal human intuition, as well as the teaching of many churches.

The Nugget

2Ti 1:9 Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,

My Comment:

As a verse about the plan of salvation, this passage tells us plainly that we are not saved according to our works. That is a most important concept, because most people have mistaken ideas about this, sometimes even taught by their teachers at church! If you get this point wrong (as most certainly the Council of Trent did years ago), you will be in for a very unpleasant surprise come eternity. God saves us according to his own purpose and grace as given to us in Christ Jesus. There is much to “unpack” in this short verse.
