Daily Bible Nugget #556, Proverbs 26:27

The Nugget:

Pro 26:27  Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein: and he that rolleth a stone, it will return upon him.

My Comment:

A slightly larger context from this passage in Proverbs should make the application to today’s environment very clear to careful, thoughtful readers:

Pro 26:24 Whoever hates disguises himself with his lips and harbors deceit in his heart;
Pro 26:25 when he speaks graciously, believe him not, for there are seven abominations in his heart;
Pro 26:26 though his hatred be covered with deception, his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly.
Pro 26:27 Whoever digs a pit will fall into it, and a stone will come back on him who starts it rolling.
Pro 26:28 A lying tongue hates its victims, and a flattering mouth works ruin. (ESV)

Now that sufficient time has passed since I wrote my previous article, I believe it is evident that good prevailed over evil, even if by a fairly narrow margin.

President Trump was acquitted of the two charges brought by the Democrats in the House of Representatives. In my judgment, those two charges did not at all rise to the level of impeachable offenses under our Constitution.

I think that Nancy Pelosi in particular, by her actions of tearing up her copy of the President’s State of the Union address, placed herself and the party she represents in very poor light.

At this point I think it would be most wise to not elect any Democrats to Congress, House or Senate, or the Presidency itself, until Democrats divorce themselves entirely from their present far left-wing nonsense. I, personally, have usually voted for Democrat candidates because the Democratic Party in the past supported teachers and public education far more than the Republican Party ever did. But now I must reject all of the Democrats because of their support of Socialism and their wrongful stance on moral issues, such as the right to life and the defense of the Second Amendment.

Their wrong positions on important issues will hopefully come back to haunt and frustrate them for many years to come. Help make that happen. Be sure to vote.

In my last post or article I ended the article with this statement:

Be sure to read and study your Bible enough to make a difference in your life. That has immediate benefits and can bring good eternal consequences!

That is a most important comment.

If you let this idea sink in and then follow its advice, you will experience wonderful new insight and will improve your life.

I noticed as the sponsor of the Bible Discussion Club at Cass Technical High School in Detroit, Michigan, that as my students became more interested in the Bible it brought real change to their lives. I am still in touch with a few of those students. It is my observation that those changes were real back then and those changes remain in their lives today, fifty years later!

If you would read the Bible seriously more than five days a week, starting at first with the New Testament, your life will change.

What changes can you expect to see?

(1) Far less anxiety

(2) Deliverance from addictions, whether smoking, drinking alcohol, taking drugs, consuming pornography, participating in any immoral lifestyle choices.

(3) An increasing interest in the Bible and spiritual things.

(4) An ever-increasing desire to help others place their faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.

(5) An increasing ability to tell the difference between truth and propaganda.

If enough people would experience a deeper faith in the Bible and our Lord Jesus Christ, our country would experience a real change for the better. Families would be strengthened. Children would learn in the home what they might not learn in school–substantial moral values that undergird a successful life.

Make Bible reading and study a priority in your life to make your world a better place.

Daily Bible Nugget #555, Proverbs 18:17

Proverbs 18:17  He that is first in his own cause seemeth just; but his neighbour cometh and searcheth him. (KJV)

Pro 18:17  The first to state his case seems right until his neighbor comes to cross-examine him. (GW)

Pro 18:17 You may think you have won your case in court, until your opponent speaks. (CEV)

My Comment:

In my judgement, at least half, and probably many more, of the people in this country are not able to distinguish the truth from lies. They are not able to discern propaganda from reality.

I have been listening to the Democrats present their case for the impeachment of President Donald Trump. The speakers have been very articulate, and within the narrow scope and context of what they present, are very convincing. But being articulate and convincing does not make them correct. The problem is not just that what they declare to be truth is not correct. The problem is that they do not include the necessary context.

Sometimes, when what you present is only part of the truth, then what you present is a lie.

This is true in a formal debate. I have participated in formal debates since high school. I was fortunate to have been on the winning team most of the time in high school and college. I sometimes defeated my opponents by presenting information that went beyond what was presented in that season’s debate handbook. I got my information from professional journals and books that I found in the Detroit Public Library’s main library on Woodward Avenue.

These principles are very pertinent to Bible study and Bible doctrine. While the Bible does not contradict itself, many who interpret the Bible contradict other Bible interpreters!

How is it possible to figure out who actually has the correct understanding of the Bible?

The best way is to read the Bible repeatedly and extensively for yourself. But don’t just read the Bible:  be sure to study the Bible. One of the best ways to study the Bible is by consulting what are called “cross references.” I have specialized in that kind of Bible study for over sixty years. I have furnished many cross-reference Bible studies on this site. But there are other methods of Bible study and I have described them in detail with directions on how to do them under the category “How to Study the Bible.” The link is on the right hand side of this page.

If you read the Bible seriously for yourself you will learn much you did not know before. I used to tell my high school classmates that “Three chapters a day keeps the devil away.” To that, I would add, read one chapter of the book of Proverbs every day. Read the chapter that corresponds to the day’s date. That suggestion I first heard from my own Sunday school teacher, Dean Sawdon, at the Highland Park Baptist Church utterly changed my life. If you follow his suggestion, it will change your life too.

Reading the Bible only on Sunday, or only at church, will not produce the maximum benefit Bible reading and study can bring to your life. If you will read the Bible more than four days a week it will make a much greater impact on your life. I recommend reading the Bible every day. Just like we eat our physical food every day, often three meals a day, so we should have our spiritual food daily.

I fear for the well-being of our country. Too many are taking information only from the “mainstream media.” The mainstream media are clearly biased in their reporting. Journalists and teleprompter readers are presenting opinion as if it were fact, and the national audience, hearing the lies often enough, believe them to be the truth.

Jesus spoke of the problem of seeing the speck in another person’s eye but not noticing the log in your own. That is very evident in the accusations being thrown about in the mainstream media and by the Democrats. They are accusing President Trump of the very crimes that they are provably guilty of themselves.

Take the matter of the telephone call President Trump made to the Ukrainian leader. A Democratic leader in the House of Representatives went so far as to make up his own version of what he thought was said during that call.

President Trump provided the transcript of the actual call. That should have embarrassed the Democrats, but instead they continue to press on with their accusations of “Russian collusion” (when it is clear that Mrs. Hillary Clinton is the one who spent money for the “Russian dossier”) and for which a two-year and more investigation produced NO evidence of wrongdoing by President Trump.

And so for the Ukraine, it turns out that President Trump was following the law when he checked to be sure that American aid to Ukraine would not be diverted to other nefarious purposes, as happened under the Obama administration when Vice President Joe Biden withheld funds until the prosecutor investigating his son Hunter Biden was removed from office.

Getting a position on a gas company’s Board of Directors that paid over $80,000 a month to someone with no experience or knowledge of that energy field ought to merit investigation. I have a book that describes these dealings and more that took place in 2014 or so in detail. That some Democrat leaders and their children (like Hunter Biden) become very rich as a result of the parents holding high political office is not an indication of anything President Trump has done wrong, nor is it any reflection on his character as I heard the Democrats arguing even today.

I observe a few friends on Facebook repeating the lies and swallowing the propaganda. What the mainstream media presents is sometimes intentionally designed to divide us not unite us. Anyone who refers to “white privilege” as a problem in our society has been deceived by the media or other sources. Some are influenced by Marxist propaganda and embrace Marxist values. At least in this country, we all have the opportunity to succeed in life. We are not guaranteed equal success. But we do have the freedom to succeed.

This month I’ve been reading a very new book about Old Testament theology and the cultural background of the Old Testament itself. Wading some distance into this academic resource, I noted that the author confesses that he is a Marxist. No wonder he has such a different understanding of the Bible than I do! He even mentions but so far does not tell much about the “Kingdom of God.” Like too many commentators on the Bible who write about the Kingdom of God, he demonstrates that he has not thoroughly studied this important Bible subject. I noticed right away when I began reading the book that the author has assumed many things that are simply not true. But I can still learn from him so I continue to read the book.

When it comes time to vote in November, be certain you do not sit home and refuse to vote because you don’t like the candidate or because you don’t believe in voting for the lesser of two evils! If you refuse to use your influence for good by refusing to vote responsibly you may be held accountable one day for failing to do what is right (James 4:17). And in the here and now, you may experience consequences that you will not like.

Be sure to read and study your Bible enough to make a difference in your life. That has immediate benefits and can bring good eternal consequences!

Daily Bible Nugget #554, Proverbs 1:10

The Nugget:

Proverbs 1:10  My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.

My Comment:

I particularly noticed this verse from the first chapter of Proverbs when I first began to read the Bible for myself. The verse is short but clear. Do not follow others if what they do will be wrong or lead to trouble. Being popular with the wrong crowd will not get you to where you need to go in life.

Daily Bible Nugget #553, Isaiah 55:3

The Nugget:

Isa 55:3  Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.

My Comment:

A friend posted on Facebook recently that if Israel still has a covenant with God, then the New Covenant does not exist.

I don’t know that this would be the case. Israel is surely still under the Abrahamic Covenant as well as the Davidic Covenant, since these two great fundamental covenants contain some eternal and unconditional provisions.

My friend further commented that it is easy to be swayed by false teachers. Some of these teachers are apparently to be seen on television. Some of what these teachers proclaim is not really religious or biblical teaching but political content.

As for me, I don’t watch television. I don’t have a working television in my home. But I understand from the testimony of others that there are popular but mistaken false teachers who use that medium. But there are some good Bible teachers out there who teach what the Bible declares quite accurately. Some of these teachers believe present-day Israel is a fulfillment of Bible prophecy and, according to the Bible, there is much more to come.

Some would identify this view as “Zionism,” and describe themselves as “anti-Zionists.” I’m still learning about this subject, thanks in part to the efforts of my friend. But I have studied Bible prophecy extensively directly from the Bible as I prepared my books, The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge, Nelson’s Cross Reference Guide to the Bible, and most recently, The Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury. I have thoroughly read and continue to read the thorough-going nineteenth century scholarly three-volume study by George N. H. Peters, The Theocratic Kingdom, originally published in 1884.

I have learned through my reading about Bible prophecy that there are plenty of disagreements about the subject. What I find amazing is that George Peters encountered many of these disagreements in his day and answered them carefully from the Bible. That is why I often recommend interested students of the Bible to procure and read what Mr. Peters has written. His work is available now in digital format for free on the Internet.

My friend suggested that since Jesus clearly said, “My Kingdom is NOT of this World,” we ought to just teach Jesus and let the politicians tackle the subject of politics.

My friend might be right. But I include a note below involving the proper understanding of John 18:36, a note taken directly from Peters’ The Theocratic Kingdom. I think what Peters wrote helps us to understand John 18:36 more completely in its original setting and so helps us see how what Jesus said then factors in to understanding Bible prophecy more accurately.

My Response:

Might be wise to reconsider Malachi 3:6,

Mal 3:6 For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

Since God Himself declares that “I change not,” He has preserved the nation of Israel over these many centuries so that He can fulfill the promises He has made to them. They have not been completely fulfilled yet. There is more to come!

Not to mention Isaiah 55:3,

Isa 55:3 Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.

I don’t recall reading anywhere in the Bible that the sure mercies of David have been canceled or transferred to someone else!

In my experience, if you ask anyone in church, or anyone that is even somewhat familiar with the Bible, “What are the sure mercies of David?” the person is usually not able to come up with an answer. This subject makes for a most interesting Bible study.

And as for what Jesus said in John 18:36, my friend on Facebook may not have noticed what is said further on in the verse: “but NOW is my kingdom not from hence.”

Joh 18:36  Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

but now. Peters observes “Will the Savior contradict the predictions of the prophets? No, for He qualifies His language, guarding it, by the “but now,” i.e. at the present time, my Kingdom is not of this world and my servants do not fight, leaving the plain inference that at some future time, just as prophesied, His servants would fight” (Theocratic Kingdom, vol. 2, p. 109).

My friend has since shared with me many citations from standard Bible commentaries which do not support the position I hold. At least a few of those commentaries (especially the commentaries by Barnes, as I recall) are old enough that they are cited by George N. H. Peters. Peters sometimes catches commentators making very interesting concessions when discussing some passages in the Bible which turn out to support the view Peters presents from Scripture. This is a fascinating subject for deeper Bible study.

Four Questions Answered

My Answer:

Let me answer your four questions for you:

(1) Go to church on Sunday

The Bible records in the New Testament that Jesus bodily arose from the dead on the “first day of the week” (Mark 16:9)

Mark 16:9

9  Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils.
King James Version

The “first day of the week” is our Sunday. From the times of the New Testament the early disciples met for specifically Christian worship on the first day of the week (Acts 20:7).

Acts 20:7

7  And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.
King James Version

(2) Jesus sing and dance in the church

This may be a cultural feature practiced by some Christians but as far as I know is not the practice of the first Christians as recorded in the New Testament. However, we are commanded in the New Testament to “rejoice evermore” (1 Thessalonians 5:16), so in some cultures today singing and dancing may well express their way of rejoicing and praising the Lord.

(4) Where Jesus said God is 3 in 1

Matthew 28:19

19  Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: (King James Version)

Notice carefully that Matthew 28:19 contains the direct words of Jesus. Notice also that Jesus spoke of the “name” (singular, meaning one) not “names” of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. In this passage, therefore, the three Persons of the Godhead are spoken of as one God.

 

There is much more evidence contained in the Bible that shows that all three Persons are spoken of as deity, divine, or God, but only these three, and no others. Those who carefully study the Bible know that this is what the Bible teaches about God: He is One God eternally existing in three Persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

The surest weapon against bad ideas

My Comment:

One source of the best ideas is the Bible. You can find good ideas in many well-written books. In my teaching career I shared a proverb or quotation each day. I wrote the proverb or quotation on the blackboard. One day after school at the last school where I taught in Detroit, a father whose daughter was on another school’s basketball team stopped me and asked, “Do you remember me?” He was a student at the first high school where I taught. I said I remember you but can’t recall your name. You sat in the last seat of the window row in room 629 at Cass Technical High School. He especially remarked, “Your proverbs and quotations have changed my life!” Then he proceeded to quote a proverb he remembered I had used from Benjamin Franklin.

Sometimes people do not believe the Bible. Somehow they have believed a bad idea about the Bible. The study of apologetics, the solid reasons to believe the Bible, has been a source of encouragement to me for many years. That is why you will find under “Categories” to the right of this page a number of categories devoted to apologetics.

I trust that at least some of my readers here will enjoy the proverbs and quotations I share from my “Proverbs and Quotations” file I originally compiled over many years for use in my classroom. At least they ought to give you something worthwhile to think about!

Sharpen your focus

My Comment:

I share this quotation at the beginning of this new year and decade to alert us all of the danger of being too distracted from important things by things less important.

I learned early in my teaching career and in my participation in church activities that it is possible to spread myself too thin. I decided on a simple solution to reduce this problem: commit to doing the things I can do that others usually cannot, and let others do the things they can do rather than having me do them.

Now that I am retired from teaching, the problem persists! I must prioritize and focus on the most important things to do and the most important things to learn.

On Reading

My Comment:

We must take time to read. It would be good to “edge in a little reading every day.” There are many things worth reading. I think the best book worth reading over and over is the Bible. I suggest that you start with the New Testament. Read it through several times. When I began reading the New Testament in earnest, I managed to read it all the way through once a month for almost three months, and it changed my whole life. I invite you to do the same. This is a good way to make time count for eternity.

There are three reviews that I think it would be helpful for me  to comment on that either raise a question or exhibit a misunderstanding:

PROS: Seems very thorough. Fast – like the other e-sword products References to other products (e.g. Strong’s) is appreciated. Had the references NOT been keyed, they would be worth little; however, keying them so that the user can immediately see the cross reference makes it a valuable resource. I now start my e-sword with the UCRT as my default CONS: None found yet (have used 2-3 weeks) Suggested improvements: allow me to annotate within rather than using the notes utility. Allow the user to send suggested annotations to the author for future releases.

My Comment:

I have tried to find Pastor Tim Deaton on the Internet but have been unsuccessful. If any of you know him, let him know he can find me here!

I would like a feature like he suggests, but I, too, have been restricted in e-Sword to the notes utility. But at least that works when needed.

This is a good and helpful resource. Nicely laid out, well structured, easy to follow, and much more expansive than the TSK. The one flaw is that the comments tend to be biased toward dispensational pretribulationalism, which is unexpected for this kind of resource.

My Comment:

I have stated in the Preface that my book is not generic. I try to present the best evidence from the Bible when I must touch upon controversial topics. I try to present valid alternative views fairly with the best evidence available to me in their support.

I have come down firmly on the side of the Premillennial position, especially the Pre-Tribulation Rapture, because the evidence I have marshaled from Scripture itself demonstrates this is the correct position.

I have thoroughly studied and thoroughly referenced George N. H. Peters’ scholarly three-volume work, The Theocratic Kingdom. He has proven, beyond any possible reasonable doubt, that the Premillennial position is the correct view. This view holds that our Lord Jesus Christ returns to this earth BEFORE the Millennium.

What most readers may fail to notice is that I restored notes in the book of Revelation that were originally presented in Bagster’s Comprehensive Bible where the editors of the original Treasury of Scripture Knowledge left them out. These notes support an entirely different view of Bible prophecy. Furthermore, the sources Thomas Scott used for the cross references were from scholars who held the Amillennial viewpoint. So in actuality, there is a hidden balance behind what is presented in the Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury after all.

This is by far the most cross references any other book has!. But it still lacks a more complete theological cross reference to add onto it. For example: When we read Genesis 1:3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. the book list all possible cross references, except one that has to do with The Light of the world, Jesus Christ: In him was life; and the life was the light of men (Jn 1:4 KJV). It will be a plus to have also the reciprocal cross-reference. The book needs to be perfected in order to be The Ultimate Cross-Reference Treasure. Thank You!…and God bless!.

My Comment:

There are theological cross references of the kind Derrick Folen requests. But in this case, he is right. I did not include John 1:4. But I did include John 1:5 and more references in John to this theme in the cross references given for Genesis 1:3.

Actually, I spent much time and effort to include the reciprocal cross references in the Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury. These are fully given for Isaiah through Malachi for the Old Testament, and for all of the New Testament. I selectively gave the reciprocal cross references from Genesis through The Song of Solomon. I always gave them for the verses included in the “Key Verse Comparison Chart” included in the Thomas Nelson edition of the Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance (1984), as well as many more. For the Sermon on the Mount and many other passages I used my Logos Bible Software to do a complete search for “reciprocal references” based on my book, The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge, which has never been done before. I say in the Preface, and have thought all along, that life is too short for one person to assemble this large of a collection of Bible cross-references. But I am thankful to have had the opportunity to do what I have done.
