Daily Bible Nugget #29, Psalm 119:102

The Nugget:

Psalm 119:102 I have not departed from thy judgments: for thou hast taught me.

My Comment:

There are many different names in Psalm 119 for the Bible, God’s written Word. Psalm 119:102 uses the title “thy judgments” for the Bible. The Psalmist states he has not departed from God’s judgments, God’s Word. The basis for the Psalmist’s faithful adherence to the Bible is the fact that God has taught him. The Psalm writer lets us know that as he made the Bible his personal subject of careful study, God through the Bible has given him understanding and has taught him what it means. God will do that for each of us too, if we will let Him. We let Him teach us when we take time to read, reread, and study His written word in the Bible. The Bible is a self-teaching, self-correcting Book. You will not go astray into false doctrine or mistaken theologies or interpretations of Scripture if you stick to carefully reading the Bible itself. I have discovered that if I am mistaken about what a passage in the Bible means, I will soon discover my error, because a mistaken understanding of one part of the Bible will create a conflict or contradiction of the meaning or teaching found in another part of the Bible. I am most certain that the few friends and acquaintances of mine who have fallen into false cults have done so because they failed to let God instruct them directly from His Word. You will be much further ahead if you let God teach you directly from His written Word in the Bible first, before you venture into unknown and unverified spiritual territory! When it comes to Bible study, there is simply no match by way of effectiveness to the Bible study method known as cross reference Bible study to ground your life in the truths of the Word of God.

Daily Bible Nugget #28, Psalm 119:101

The Nugget:

Psalm 119:101 I have refrained my feet from every evil way, that I might keep thy word.

My Comment:

The Psalmist was committed to obeying God’s Word. This meant he refrained from all sin. Jesus came to save us from sin and sins. If we are truly saved, our salvation has made a radical difference in our lives. We too refrain from every evil way. Check out your Bible carefully. Jesus came to save us from our sins (Matthew 1:21), not in our sins. Paul said, “And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins” (1 Corinthians 15:17). But Christ most definitely has been raised from the dead, therefore we who believe in Him are not left in our sins. Salvation means deliverance. If we have truly been saved, we have been delivered from the power of sin. Jesus told the woman taken in adultery that He did not condemn her, adding the significant words, “go, and sin no more” (John 8:11). He literally told her (as it reads in the original Greek text) to “Stop sinning!” Knowing God truly will make a difference in our lives. If enough people came to know the God of the Bible and the salvation that is His gift, there would be a positive change for good in the world. More people would refrain their feet from every evil way. Now, if only we could fill Washington with people like that! Not to mention, everyplace else.

Daily Bible Nugget #27, Psalm 119:100

The Nugget:

Psalm 119:100 I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts.

My Comment:

Once again, the Psalmist affirms that by heeding what the Bible says, by reading, studying, and actually obeying its precepts, his understanding has come to surpass those who are far older than he. Once again, firm evidence that the Bible itself teaches that it can be understood. Understanding the Bible gives wisdom to those who obey what they understand. Solomon said, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding” (Proverbs 4:7). All of my former students ought to recall Proverbs 4:7, for that was the first of many daily proverbs and quotations I posted on the blackboard of my classroom each new school year. One of the most important places to get that wisdom is from the Bible itself.

Daily Bible Nugget #26, Psalm 119:99

The Nugget:

Psalm 119:99 I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation.

My Comment:

I doubt very much that the Psalmist is being inordinately boastful. He is declaring a matter of fact in his experience. Shame on each of us individually if we do not experience this very thing for ourselves. The Psalmist meditated upon God’s Word. This was a regular, daily part of his life. Surely, if he studied the Bible independently, and kept at it, it should be expected that he could surpass his teachers. In my own experience teaching in public school I am aware of at least one of my former pupils, Pastor Emory Moss, that has likely surpassed his old English teacher when it comes to the knowledge of the Bible he shares daily on his radio program on WLQV in Detroit, AM1500. I’m sure he would not mind if you listened in on the program which airs from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm daily, Eastern Time, Monday through Friday. It is “streamed” on the Internet at www.am1500wlqv.com. The program is called “Bible Talk,” and listeners are encouraged to call in with their Bible questions, or answers to the challenges Pastor Moss sometimes issues at the beginning of the program. So, through very ordinary but diligent study and meditation upon God’s Word in the Bible, each of us ought, over time, to have more understanding than all our teachers. But this is a remarkable testimony in the Bible itself to the perspicuity of Scripture. Now don’t run away scared by the big word. The doctrine of the perspicuity of Scripture simply means that the Bible itself teaches that it can be understood!

Daily Bible Nugget #25, Psalm 119:98

The Nugget:

Psa 119:98 Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me.

My Comment:

The Bible gives us wisdom, even enough wisdom to make us wiser than our enemies. The Psalmist may have had in mind specific persons who were his enemies in his day. But if we consider our enemies to be the world, the flesh, and the devil, the Bible can give us the wisdom needed to overcome all these too. Concerning the Bible, someone has said “This Book will keep you from sin, or sin will keep you from this Book.”

Daily Bible Nugget #24, Psalm 119:97

The Nugget:

Psalm 119:97 MEM. O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day.

My Comment:

“MEM” is the name of the letter in the Hebrew alphabet with which this acrostic or alphabetical Psalm section starts each of its sentences (for these next eight verses). This entire segment is worth careful study. In my estimation, it is one of the high points in the Bible where the Bible speaks of itself. The Psalmist expresses his great love of God’s Word. He makes it his meditation all the day. Of course for him, or for us, to do that, we must have at least read it enough that we can, in fact, remember significant parts of it, so we can meditate or think about what God says in His Word throughout our day. Memorizing Bible verses is one effective way to accomplish this. Reading a portion of the Bible first thing in the morning or last thing at night is another way to prepare our minds and hearts to be thinking about the content of God’s Word. Even thinking about these “Bible Nuggets” day by day as I have posted them can enable you to have a portion of God’s Word in your mind to equip you to think about, or meditate on God’s Word all the day.

I love thy law. This is the attitude true Bible believing Christians have toward the written Word of God found in the Bible. But some religious groups, especially the Roman Catholic Church, argue that “Scripture never says that Scripture is the sole infallible authority for God’s Word” in an argument to support the Roman Catholic view that “Scripture Alone Disproves ‘Scripture Alone.'” Almost every false cult holds a similar view. No one who studies the Bible itself and receives it for what it says about itself would ever come to hold this view about the Bible from a study of Scripture itself. This Roman Catholic argument is INVALID in that form because what is really at question is not if or whether Scripture says in exactly those words that it is the sole infallible authority for God’s Word, but is this a proper, necessary, and valid inference to be drawn by the statements and examples that are given in the Bible. Of course the claim that “Scripture alone disproves ‘Scripture alone'” argued by Roman Catholics is not a valid inference drawn directly from Scripture, but the very opposite. ver. 9, +47, 159, 163, 165. Daily Bible Nugget #23, Psalm 119:105

The Nugget:

Psalm 119:105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

My Comment:

I have argued repeatedly and at length with individuals on the Internet who have been persuaded by their official “Teaching Authority” that the Bible cannot be understood or correctly interpreted by the ordinary person. On this theme at least, if not on many others, that so-called “Teaching Authority” is profoundly mistaken. The Bible repeatedly declares that it is understandable. If the Bible cannot be understood, how could the Bible writer state that God’s Word is a lamp for his feet, and a light to his path? The Bible was written to illuminate the path of life and guide us on the way. No other Book can serve this function. As a well-educated English teacher (with enough college semester hours in the fields of English and linguistics to total more than what is required for a triple academic major), I can tell you that as much as I enjoy great literature, no work of great literature, not even Shakespeare, can lay claim to “converting the soul” (Psalm 19:7), or bring the reader into full possession of eternal life. John declares the purpose of his book, the Gospel of John, stating “But these are written that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing ye might have life through his name” (John 20:31). Where will you spend eternity? Read the One Book that will direct you to the right place! The other “place” is not where you want to go. Unfortunately, more people are needlessly and heedlessly headed to the wrong place than to the right place because, John tells us, “men love darkness rather than light because their deeds are evil” (John 3:19). Don’t end up one of those folks. While they think all their friends will be there, it won’t be a party.

Daily Bible Nugget #22, Psalm 19:7

The Nugget:

Psa 19:7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.

My Comment:

I understand this to mean, in the simplest of terms, that the Bible, God’s written Word, is perfect. God caused men to write the Bible, but He inspired them by His Holy Spirit to write what He wanted written. Since God wrote it, the Bible is perfect. There are no mistakes or contradictions in the Bible as it came from God’s inspired penmen.

God’s Word as it is found in the Bible has the power to convert the soul. It has the power to convert your soul. If you read the Bible for a while, and believe what it says, you will be converted. If you have not yet been converted to true faith in Christ, it may be that you haven’t read the Bible enough yet. When I began to read the New Testament continuously, it took only from August to November for God to work a total change in my life. I became truly saved, and knew it. Some Bible readers may take longer to get to that point, but surely if you read what is there and believe what is written, this wonderful experience will happen to you, too. Now, I am not a pastor. I am not a preacher. I became a secondary level or high school English teacher. Not all English teachers have studied the Bible to the degree I have. Perhaps many, if not most pastors have not studied the Bible to the extent that I have either. But my point is, I was converted to true, life-changing faith in Christ as a teenager (without knowing it would happen, without even seeking for it to happen) by reading repeatedly through the New Testament. It is in part my mission to encourage others to read the Bible so they can be brought to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. In less “religious language,” reading and absorbing the New Testament message will change both your worldview and your outlook on life. When it happens to you, you will be convinced that it is the best thing you have ever experienced.

The Bible gives us wisdom. It makes us wise. It makes the ordinary, perhaps unpretentious, unsophisticated person to be wise. That wisdom can help you keep your own life on the right track. It can give you much of the knowledge you need to make wise decisions in life.

I have encouraged students in my English classes over the span of nearly 40 years of my teaching career to turn to the Bible for help when they were facing difficult circumstances and seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Many of them thanked me profusely for having passed along this suggestion to them. They said it changed their lives. It brought them to the true light. They came to know Christ as their Savior. One student called all the “Smith’s” in the then very large Detroit phone book till he reached my name to inform me of his new-found faith in Christ. Another called me from the home where she was babysitting to let me know that after reading the Bible as I encouraged her to do, she had just knelt down beside a bed while the children slept and gave her life to Christ. I did not “coach” any of these students as to what or how to do any of this. I simply suggested that to find the help they desperately needed, they would find the Bible most helpful.

May God bless your reading of His Word, even if for now some of you are limited by time and circumstances such that reading just one “Daily Bible Nugget” is all you can do. As I said before, if you do even that much, you will find God will work in your life through His Word.

Daily Bible Nugget #21, Psalm 37:24

The Nugget:

Psalm 37:24 Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand.

My Comment:

Naomi thought the hand of the Lord was against her. But we now have the whole package, the complete revelation of God to us as it is given in the Bible. Rather than supposing that the hand of the Lord is against us, may we learn from this passage that the Lord is upholding us with his hand. When we get upset at God because of our circumstances, sometimes the fault is our own, for we are not solidly convinced about the character of God as it is revealed in Scripture. The more we read and study the Bible, the more we get to know God. The better we know God, the better we understand his character, his attributes. The Bible teaches that God is no respecter of persons. He does not treat some of us less fairly than others! Difficulties and trials are sometimes sent our way to strengthen our character and build our trust in him to prepare us to help someone God may later send across our path to whom we can be an encouragement.

Here are the extensive cross references I have collected for Psalm 37:24 as given in The Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury:

Daily Bible Nugget #20, Ruth 1:13

The Nugget:

Ruth 1:13 Would ye tarry for them till they were grown? would ye stay for them from having husbands? nay, my daughters; for it grieveth me much for your sakes that the hand of the LORD is gone out against me.

My Comment

This is a verse to challenge the pessimists! Naomi had reason to be discouraged. Many times we think we have reason to be discouraged, and wonder why God does not seem to come through for us in a given situation. Could it be, like Naomi, that “the hand of the LORD is gone out against us”? While this might possibly be true, should it happen that we are being chastened by the Lord, most likely this is often not the case. A careful study of the cross references I have collected for this verse yields many valuable lessons for life in our walk with God.

For those who desire to DIG DEEPER into this issue:
