Daily Bible Nugget #147, Romans 3:2

The Nugget:

Romans 3:2 Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them were committed the oracles of God.

My Comment:

Paul, in answering the question “What advantage has the Jew?” makes use of the twelfth title the Bible gives itself, the oracles of God. It is to the Jew that God entrusted His written word.

I observe many anti-Semitic slurs posted on the Internet in reader comments below articles on popular news sites against both Jews and the modern Jewish nation of Israel.

Such an attitude reveals the ignorance of the Bible of such writers who make those comments. The Jews still are God’s chosen people. They are still the “apple of His eye.” Those who speak against them, those who in Bible language curse them (Genesis 12:3), place themselves in a very precarious relationship to God. The land of Israel (and the boundaries given it described in the Bible) remains the promised land for the Jewish people as confirmed by an unbreakable eternal covenant.

Just lately I heard that the United Nations bowed to the request of Muslim nations who objected to a display documenting 3500 years of Jewish history in Israel. The display was removed from the United Nations. The United Nations and all Muslim nations are the enemy of God, the enemy of truth, and enemies of the Gospel. Our current President, and John Kerry, are likewise the enemies of God. They stand as the enemies of Israel by the policies they advocate.

Don’t give me any of this nonsense that God has permanently cast off His people Israel. Anyone who makes this theological claim is just revealing their ignorance of Scripture. Take note of just one Bible passage which clearly and irrevocably proclaims the opposite, Isaiah 41:8-9, “But thou, Israel, art my servant, Jacob whom I have chosen, the seed of Abraham my friend. Thou whom I have taken from the ends of the earth, and called thee from the chief men thereof, and said unto thee, Thou art my servant, I have chosen thee, and not cast thee away.”

This Bible statement demolishes the mistaken teaching on prophetic matters of the Roman Catholic Church, the Seventh-day Adventist Church (who proclaim their superior knowledge of Bible prophecy!), the Jehovah’s Witnesses (who do the same), not to mention many Calvinists and others who claim to believe in the Preterist position in Bible prophecy, a position which denies literal Israel any possible future in the Land once promised them in fulfillment of the Abrahamic Covenant.

Such interpreters, grossly misinformed about Bible prophecy, believe that Paul’s statement in Galatians 3:16, “Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ” refutes any claim I might make asserting that God plans to fulfill His promises to the literal nation of Israel in a literal manner. On the basis of this verse they argue that the promises have been transferred from what I call natural Israel to what they call spiritual Israel, namely the Church, or all believers in Christ. But in so arguing they neglect what Paul teaches in Romans 11:29, “For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.” In other words, irrevocable. In Romans 11:26 Paul declares, “And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion [Zion] the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob.”

God still has His plan reserved for natural Israel. The prophetic roadmap for events over long centuries is well laid out in great detail in Leviticus chapter 26. So, there is no excuse for anyone, and especially Christians, to engage in berating Israel or the Jews. To do so is to place oneself under the curse proclaimed in the Abrahamic Covenant provision given at Genesis 12:3, “And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.” The sure mercies of David (Isaiah 55:3) are still in force. So is the Abrahamic Covenant. Instead of castigating the Jews and Israel, we should be thanking God for His great mercy to us in extending His salvation to all who will believe. The very oracles of God, what we call our Bible, has come to us through God’s Jewish people. We need to heed the commandment reflected in Psalm 122:6, “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee.”

Daily Bible Nugget #146, Ephesians 6:17

The Nugget:

Ephesians 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

My Comment:

The eleventh title the Bible gives itself is the sword of the Spirit. This classic passage on spiritual warfare is worth repeated study. The Bible is an offensive weapon. Its message is powerful. The Bible can counteract the influence of Satan. It can change the climate of a home, a family, a classroom, a school, a neighborhood, a city, and on up to the world at large. The Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity, accompanies the word of God found in the Bible and renders it effective to change lives and bring people into a right relationship with God. Recall that Jesus during His temptation by the Devil in the wilderness defended Himself with this very weapon, the Word of God, telling Satan “It is written.” We, on our part, need to get well-acquainted with the Bible so God can use it in our lives to ward off the attacks of the enemy of souls. We are told in Scripture to resist the Devil, and he will flee from us. One major way to resist the Devil is to answer him with Scripture, just as Jesus did.

Daily Bible Nugget #145, Isaiah 30:9

The Nugget:

Isaiah 30:9 That this is a rebellious people, lying children, children that will not hear the law of the LORD:

My Comment:

This is another example of the title the law of the Lord being used in the Bible as a title for itself. Reading “between the lines,” it is possible to discern an implicit “cause/effect” relationship stated in this verse. Those who are rebellious, those that are liars, are also those who will not hear the law of the Lord. I think the power of the Gospel and the message of the Bible can be introduced successfully, over time, to such persons. Once they begin to hear the Word of God, it begins to work in their heart, in their inner being. The outcome is ultimately their conversion to Christ. When this happens, as they continue from that point to grow spiritually, they no longer will be devoted to lies and rebellion.

Daily Bible Nugget #144, Psalm 1:2

The Nugget:

Psalm 1:2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

My Comment:

The tenth title the Bible gives itself is the law of the Lord. The First Psalm is describing the blessed man. That is the man who is blessed by God. This man delights in the law of the Lord. He delights in it so much that he meditates about it day and night. We all need to keep this as our goal–to stay in God’s Word on a daily basis. Make it a part of our thinking day and night. That is the description of the blessed man and what he does on a regular basis. Make the Bible part of your life by reading from it every day. Take no shortcuts; accept no substitutes!

Daily Bible Nugget #143, Galatians 3:10

The Nugget:

Galatians 3:10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.

My Comment:

The title given by the Bible to the Bible in this verse is the book of the law. This verse provides a severe warning: anyone who depends on what they do for God to deserve salvation is under the curse of God. You simply can never be good enough to earn or otherwise merit or deserve salvation. Depending upon any kind of obedience to the requirements of the law for salvation will result in the loss of salvation. Obedience to the law of God must involve obedience to all of God’s law. James expressed it this way, “For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all” (James 2:10). Both James in James 2:10 and Paul in Galatians 3:10 are referring to Deuteronomy 27:26, “Cursed be he that confirmeth not all the words of this law to do them.” This concept is most important to understand in order to be saved. Keeping the law does not lead to receiving eternal life unless you can be utterly certain that you have perfectly kept the whole law, in accordance with Leviticus 18:5, “Ye shall therefore keep my statutes, and my judgments: which if a man do, he shall live in them: I am the Lord.” Jesus referred to this verse when He was asked the question, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” But elsewhere the Hebrew Scriptures affirm, “For there is not a just man upon the earth that doeth good and sinneth not” (Ecclesiastes 7:20). So, keeping the law perfectly is impossible. Only One Person ever succeeded in perfectly keeping the law of God, and that person is Jesus. When we place our faith in Him and what He did for us, we shall be saved.

(1) Consult the cross references given in Nelson’s Cross Reference Guide to the Bible on page 1350 for Galatians 3:10.

Galatians 3:10. as many. ver. 11. See on Ga +*2:16. Ps 19:8. Lk 7:42. *18:9-13. Ro 3:19. 4:15. 7:9-13. *8:7. works of the law. or, works of law. “Law” does not have the Greek article here, or in ver. 2, 5, or in Ga 2:16. When “law” lacks the Greek article, it no longer is a reference exclusively to the Mosaic law, but to law or rule as principle (See note on Ro 4:15). So while Paul as a Jew writing to Jews is doubtless alluding to the law of Moses, his assertion applies to any requirement of obedience to “law” or “rule” to merit salvation, and in principle is not limited to Mosaic law. Any system of belief which makes salvation depend upon what we do for God instead of what God in grace has already done for us violates this principle, and those who so depend upon works in any sense have fallen from grace (Ga 5:4), and cannot be saved as long as they are resting upon such a principle for salvation. Good works and obedience are the necessary and essential fruit and evidence of saving faith (produced by the Holy Spirit in the regenerated life as the fruit of the Spirit, Ga 5:22, 23; Ro 8:14), not its ground (Ro 16:26. Ep 2:10. T 3:8. He +*5:9. Ja 2:17). Since Scripture does not explicitly make the distinction between ceremonial and moral law, that cannot be the intended distinction here by the use and non-use of the Greek article. Hogg and Vine assert (Comm. on Galatians, Ga 2:16, p. 88) “the Apostle asserts the freedom of the Christian from the law of Moses in its totality, making no distinction as between ceremonial and moral.” ver. 2, 5. Daily Bible Nugget #142, Nehemiah 8:3

The Nugget:

Nehemiah 8:3 And he read therein before the street that was before the water gate from the morning until midday, before the men and the women, and those that could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law.

My Comment:

The ninth title in this series of titles the Bible gives itself is the book of the law. Ezra the scribe was requested by the people to bring the book of the law so they could hear it read to them. This turned out to be quite a Bible reading service, lasting from morning to midday. Notice the people listened attentively to the reading of this book. This ought to inspire us, too, to be eager to read the Bible for ourselves, or to listen attentively like they did when it is read to the congregation.

Daily Bible Nugget #141, Isaiah 34:16

The Nugget:

Isaiah 34:16 Seek ye out of the book of the LORD, and read: no one of these shall fail, none shall want her mate: for my mouth it hath commanded, and his spirit it hath gathered them.

My Comment:

This passage contains the eighth title the Bible gives itself, the book of the Lord. Notice what the prophet Isaiah tells us we are to do with the book of the Lord: “Seek ye out of the book of the Lord, and read.” That is a most important idea. Does the Bible itself tell us we should read the Bible? It certainly does tell us that here. Does the Bible itself tell us we are to go by the Bible alone? I cited Isaiah 8:20 to establish the fact that it does. You will surely be blessed and encouraged by taking time to read and study the Bible for yourself.

Daily Bible Nugget #140, Revelation 22:18-19

The Nugget:

Revelation 22:18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:
Revelation 22:19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.

My Comment:

The title the Bible gives itself here is similar to that given in Psalm 40:7. Here the Bible calls itself this book. This passage contains a most solemn warning against adding to or taking away from what is written in the Bible. The Bible as we have it is complete. Nothing needs to be added to it by way of supposed later revelation from God. This immediately condemns one so-called “one true church” that makes a big issue about how we must hear “the rest of the story,” which is only preserved in their “unwritten tradition.” They claim that much of what Jesus said during His ministry on earth was not written down. That certainly is true, for the Bible directly tells us that in John 20:30, which members of this group frequently quote. They do not seem to be aware of or emphasize the very next verse, John 20:31. John makes the same point again in John 21:25, which they also love to quote. They seem unable to fathom that Jesus spoke of tradition on several occasions, and everything He said about tradition as it is recorded in the New Testament was negative. The warning about not adding anything to the Bible condemns another group, the Mormons, who suppose their Book of Mormon is an inspired addition to the Bible. The Seventh-day Adventists regard the prophecies of their founder, Mrs. Ellen G. White, to be divinely inspired revelation. Once again, they too fail to heed the warning not to add to the written Word of God found in the Bible. I have been surprised to learn that some Roman Catholics believe in prophecies given in our own time through special messengers (or are they mediums?), who report what Mary warns is coming soon. This again is an obvious violation of what is warned against in the Word of God. I have been surprised and chagrined that such devout individuals are, on the one hand, so excited about extra-Biblical supposed revelation, and, on the other hand, are so loud in their criticism of anyone who would go by the Bible alone. They have asked me, “Where in the Bible does the Bible say we must go by the Bible alone?” Shows they are not as acquainted with the Bible as they should be. The Bible clearly tells us in Isaiah 8:20, “To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” That ought to be clear enough. Isaiah used the terms “law” and “testimony” as names for the Bible. In context, some were consulting “familiar spirits” and “wizards” because in judgment, God refused to communicate to them. Any church or group or movement or organization that admits to receiving extra-Biblical supposed divine revelation is a false cult. Do not associate with them if you wish to be in obedience to the Scripture. These passages in today’s Bible Nugget pronounce a very severe penalty for those who disobey the command not to add to or take from God’s Word.

Daily Bible Nugget #139, Psalm 40:7

The Nugget:

Psalm 40:7 Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me,

My Comment:

The seventh title the Bible gives itself is the book. For those who have read the Bible for themselves and have grown to love its contents, surely to them the Bible is The Book. This passage is a Messianic Prophecy, as is seen if we consider the immediate context of the preceding and following verse. This verse is also quoted and explained as messianic prophecy in the book of Hebrews. This passage affirms that prophecy regarding the Messiah is indeed written in the book. Studying these predictions given about the coming messiah provides a firm basis for faith. The first such prediction is at Genesis 3:15. Cross references in The Treasury of Scripture Knowledge will lead you to the rest, especially if you follow the expanded references given in my New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge. The fulfillment of these many Bible prophecies is recorded in the New Testament. They could not have been fulfilled by accident. Some of the prophecies are time prophecies, and the allotted time during which they could be fulfilled has long passed. The Jews expected their messiah at the time Jesus appeared. No one could possibly appear now to fulfill those prophecies. If Jesus Christ did not fulfill them, no one can do it now. But the Jewish leaders and teachers failed to study their own Scriptures, which clearly taught “first the suffering, then the glory” (Luke 24:26; 1 Peter 1:11). They were looking for a messiah to appear in full glory. Skip the suffering! Unfortunately, because of this inattention to the important details of Bible prophecy coupled with their unbelief, the Jews missed their messiah when He came the first time. He is coming again, and it is clear from prophecy in the Hebrew Scriptures, our Old Testament, that the Jews will receive Him and be saved when He comes the second time. Paul quotes Old Testament Bible prophecy to this effect at Romans 11:26, citing Isaiah 59:20. Today we need ordinary people, Bible believing Christians, to do what the Bereans did of old when they heard Paul teach about the Bible. They went right to it and searched the Scriptures daily to see if what he taught them was true (Acts 17:11). As a result, they became Christians. This incident proves several things: (1) there is power in the Book; (2) the Book was accessible, contrary to a certain “one true church” which argues strenuously otherwise; (3) it really is possible to check out the truth of what you are being taught by testing it against what the Bible says; (4) and once again this proves that the Bible is understandable; (5) Christ is indeed to be found presented in all the Scriptures. Now, if you have any spiritual gumption at all, if you have a hunger for spiritual things, you will follow up on the several leads I’ve given to help direct your study in the Bible regarding these important matters! You will find it is a richly rewarding blessing to engage in Real Bible Study.

Daily Bible Nugget #138, Daniel 10:21

The Nugget:

Daniel 10:21 But I will shew thee that which is noted in the scripture of truth: and there is none that holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince.

My Comment:

The sixth title the Bible gives itself is the scripture of truth. In context, it is the angel God sent to Daniel who states he will show Daniel “that which is noted in the scripture of truth.” This title indicates that the Bible is true and dependable. An interesting side note pertains to “Michael your prince.” One modern English translation suggests by its rendering that Michael is the guardian angel of Israel. That would seem to be a better idea than to claim that Michael is the pre-incarnate Christ, and that Jesus has now returned to be what he was before, Michael the archangel. I hardly suppose that could be a correct understanding of who Jesus is. Paul speaks of Jesus since his resurrection and ascension to heaven as “the man Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2:5). Besides, the Bible denies Jesus took on the nature of an angel, but asserts he took on the seed of Abraham (Hebrews 2:16).
