Daily Bible Nugget #139, Psalm 40:7

The Nugget:

Psalm 40:7 Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me,

My Comment:

The seventh title the Bible gives itself is the book. For those who have read the Bible for themselves and have grown to love its contents, surely to them the Bible is The Book. This passage is a Messianic Prophecy, as is seen if we consider the immediate context of the preceding and following verse. This verse is also quoted and explained as messianic prophecy in the book of Hebrews. This passage affirms that prophecy regarding the Messiah is indeed written in the book. Studying these predictions given about the coming messiah provides a firm basis for faith. The first such prediction is at Genesis 3:15. Cross references in The Treasury of Scripture Knowledge will lead you to the rest, especially if you follow the expanded references given in my New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge. The fulfillment of these many Bible prophecies is recorded in the New Testament. They could not have been fulfilled by accident. Some of the prophecies are time prophecies, and the allotted time during which they could be fulfilled has long passed. The Jews expected their messiah at the time Jesus appeared. No one could possibly appear now to fulfill those prophecies. If Jesus Christ did not fulfill them, no one can do it now. But the Jewish leaders and teachers failed to study their own Scriptures, which clearly taught “first the suffering, then the glory” (Luke 24:26; 1 Peter 1:11). They were looking for a messiah to appear in full glory. Skip the suffering! Unfortunately, because of this inattention to the important details of Bible prophecy coupled with their unbelief, the Jews missed their messiah when He came the first time. He is coming again, and it is clear from prophecy in the Hebrew Scriptures, our Old Testament, that the Jews will receive Him and be saved when He comes the second time. Paul quotes Old Testament Bible prophecy to this effect at Romans 11:26, citing Isaiah 59:20. Today we need ordinary people, Bible believing Christians, to do what the Bereans did of old when they heard Paul teach about the Bible. They went right to it and searched the Scriptures daily to see if what he taught them was true (Acts 17:11). As a result, they became Christians. This incident proves several things: (1) there is power in the Book; (2) the Book was accessible, contrary to a certain “one true church” which argues strenuously otherwise; (3) it really is possible to check out the truth of what you are being taught by testing it against what the Bible says; (4) and once again this proves that the Bible is understandable; (5) Christ is indeed to be found presented in all the Scriptures. Now, if you have any spiritual gumption at all, if you have a hunger for spiritual things, you will follow up on the several leads I’ve given to help direct your study in the Bible regarding these important matters! You will find it is a richly rewarding blessing to engage in Real Bible Study.
