Daily Bible Nugget #104, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

The Nugget:

1 Corinthians 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
1 Corinthians 6:20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.

My Comment:

This verse should motivate our proper walk with God. If we believe in Christ, we belong to Him. Since he bought us with a price, our body belongs to Him. We are not our own. In all that we do, we should be glorifying God in our body, and in our spirit, which are God’s. Keeping ourselves aware of this, as by memorizing this passage and meditating upon it, should guide us in what we do and do not do. Our lives will be different from many people in the world who are not inclined to follow such a standard as this. I am thankful to have known many Christian students in public school who modeled this verse and had a clear testimony for Christ in the school and classroom.

For those who desire to DIG DEEPER into this subject:

(1) Consult the cross references given in Nelson’s Cross Reference Guide to the Bible on pages 1310-1311 for 1 Corinthians 6:19-20.

(2) Consult the cross references given in The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge on page 1330 or in Logos 5 Bible software for 1 Corinthians 6:19-20.

(3) Lacking access to those two resources, consult the cross references for this passage as I have developed them as given below:

1 Corinthians 6:20. ye are bought. or, redeemed. Gr. agorazō (S#59g, Mt 13:44). Redeemed, egorasthēte, and price, timēs, are to be understood here in a figurative sense. See Is 55:1 where the instruction is to eat and drink without money and without price. This is an obvious figure of speech, referring to spiritual blessings that are priceless, and so, without money and price. The figure is also evident from the fact that one does not buy when empty-handed. Accordingly, spiritual things cannot be obtained by legal or commercial means. This passage has to do with redemption, not Atonement per se, with Lordship, not the ransom/bought concept whatsoever. Believers were “redeemed with a price,” a statement of ownership or Lordship, not penal atonement. Thus, Lordship by right of ownership mandates that believers “glorify God” in “body, and in spirit.” Accordingly, the Apostle calls for a voluntary obedience to the Lordship of Christ, who redeemed every believer by the merit (He 2:9) of His blood (see Lavender NT, note “p”). 1 C **7:23.
