Daily Bible Nugget #105, 1 Corinthians 7:23

The Nugget:

1Co 7:23 Ye are bought with a price; be not ye the servants of men.

My Comment:

This verse, short and to the point, further emphasizes what the last Daily Bible Nugget verses, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, said. I always figured that though I was hired by my employer, I was working for the Lord Jesus Christ. All that we do and say is a reflection on Him. That being the case, I surely would not want to do or say anything that He would disapprove of. I have sometimes thought that instead of asking about an activity, “What’s wrong with it?” we would better ask “What is right with it?” The world about us is watching us more closely than we sometimes think. If we live in a manner that glorifies Christ, our even silent testimony may be what it takes to move someone to receive Christ. Jesus said every person is valuable and worth more than the whole world. If far more people would believe what Jesus said, there would be more respect for one another and less violence and crime taking place. All of us who believe the Bible have the privilege to attract people to the Gospel, and to a Person, the Lord Jesus Christ.

For those who desire to DIG DEEPER into this subject:

(1) Consult the cross references given in Nelson’s Cross Reference Guide to the Bible on page 1312 for 1 Corinthians 7:23.

(2) Consult the cross references given in The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge on page 1331 or in Logos 5 Bible software for 1 Corinthians 7:23.

(3) Lacking access to those two resources, consult the cross references for this passage as I have developed them as given below:

1 Corinthians 7:23. are bought. or, redeemed. Redeemed, aorist passive indicative, from agorazō (S#59g, Mt 13:44), “…to cause the release or freedom of someone by a means which proves costly to the individual causing the release—’to redeem, to set free'” (Louw and Nida, 37.131). 1 C *+6:20n. Le 25:42, 55. Ac +*20:28. 1 T 2:6n. T *2:14. 1 P *1:18, 19. 3:18. 2 P 2:1. Re 5:9. with a price. Price from timē, “…basically, the worth ascribed to a person or the value ascribed to a thing…” (Friberg). “The almost verbal repetition of 1 C 6:20 in 7:23 shows that it is a kind of slogan of Paul’s. In both verses the main point is that Christians are not free (1 C 6:19) but are the possession of Christ (1 C 7:23). Intentionally it is not said who has bought them, or from whom they are bought, or at what cost. The reference is simply to the fact of their redemption” (Friedrich Bűchsel) [Lavender NT, note “q”]. be not ye. Mt 23:8-11. Ga 2:4. 5:1. Ep **6:7.
