Daily Bible Nugget #776, Colossians 1:15

The Nugget:

Col 1:15  Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:

My Comment:

Ten days ago on September 6, 2023, I posted this comment:

  1. The Bible teaches that Jesus is before all things (thus, Jesus is eternal and uncreated) and that by Jesus “all things consist” (KJV) (Colossians 1:17). Thus the whole universe is sustained and held together by our Lord Jesus Christ, who created all things (John 1:3Hebrews 1:22:10Revelation 4:11.).

The context of Colossians 1:17 is very instructive. In fact, my interest in cross reference Bible study was lastingly increased by the cross references I found and read for Colossians 1:10,

Col 1:10  That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;

From the original Treasury of Scripture Knowledge:

Now to get back to the main study topic at hand, here are the cross references for Colossians 1:15 as given in the Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury:

In this messianic title, firstborn of all creation may be interpreted as “existing before all creation” (LN 13,79) or “existing superior to all creation (LN 87.47). FS22D4C, +Rom 8:29, FS157, +1Co 15:6. Lightfoot remarks, “all the Fathers of the second and third centuries without exception, as far as I have noticed, correctly refer it [the expression “first-born”] to the Eternal Word and not to the Incarnate Christ.” Compare Gen 41:51, 52 with +**Jer 31:9. *Exo 4:22, superiority of position, rank, priority. Deut 21:15, 16, 17, +**Psa 89:20; +**Psa 89:27.

Consider Abraham’s sons: Ishmael was the firstborn, but Isaac was the promised heir and seed, Gal 4:23. Consider also Jacob and Esau: Gen 25:23, *Mal 1:1; *Mal 1:2; *Mal 1:3, Rom 9:12, 13. Among Jacob’s sons, Reuben was the firstborn, but the birthright was Joseph’s, 1Ch 5:1, 2. Simri was made firstborn, 1Ch 26:10, though expressly not born first. Manasseh was firstborn, but the blessing was given to Ephraim, Gen 48:14.

If “firstborn” invariably means “born first,” then how can Israel (Exo 4:22), David (Psa 89:27), and Ephraim (+**Jer 31:9), and Christ (Rom 8:29, Col 1:15; Col 1:18, Heb 1:6, Rev 1:5) all be called by God “my firstborn”?

Therefore, use of the term firstborn in reference to Christ says nothing concerning his origin, but declares his position, rank, and office. Note the use of “firstborn” in Job 18:13. John Daille notes that we are to understand “…eldest or first born, to signify the head, the lord, and the master. We say, therefore, that it is in this sense we must understand the apostle’s words, Christ ’is the first-born of every creature,’ that is, the Master and Lord of them; which in no way implies that he himself is a creature; lords not being always of the same extraction and lineage with their subjects, but most frequently of another very different. And as it would be ridiculous reasoning to conclude that he who has the dominion of death is death itself, under the colour that Job terms him, ‘the first-born of death;’ so is it most impertinent arguing to infer that the Lord is a creature, because the apostle says here, that he  ‘is the first-born of every creature’” (An Exposition of Colossians, p. 102).

The term first-born does not imply that Christ was a created being. It has been interpreted as used in the absolute sense, becoming a recognized title of Messiah; thus, His preeminence and sovereignty (LNT, fn h). Col 1:17, 18, +=Lev 23:10, **Jos 14:6 note. *1Ch 5:1; 1Ch 8:38 note. of every creature. or, over all creation. That Christ is the firstborn of every creature does not require that Christ himself be a creature, because firstborn has reference not to origin but to rank or position. Dr. John MacArthur notes here that “when the ‘firstborn’ is one of a class, the class is in the plural form (cf. Col 1:18; Rom 8:29), but ‘creation,’ the class here, is in a singular form” (Study Bible, p. 1833). **Col 1:16; **Col 1:17, Neh 9:6, *Pro 8:29, 30, 31, Jer 32:17, Mar 13:19, **Joh 17:5; **Joh 17:10, +**Act 10:36, **Rom 9:5; Rom 11:36, +**Rev 3:14 note.

These should be studied in conjunction with the next verse, Colossians 1:16,

Col 1:16  For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

Colossians 1:16

all things. Logically, if all things have been created by Christ, then he of necessity is uncreated, an absolute proof of His deity. This explains why the Jehovah’s Witnesses in their New World Translation felt constrained, for doctrinal reasons, to make the unwarranted addition to the Word of God at this verse by adding “other” so as to read “all other things,” making a lame attempt to justify such an addition by a reference to Luk 11:41, 42 or Luk 13:2; Luk 13:4. In the early editions (1950, 1951, and six volumes bound in one, 1963) of their translation, “other” was not even included in brackets, as it now is—a change perhaps prompted by the harsh criticism of many Bible scholars. Daily Bible Nugget #775, John 3:13

The Nugget:

Joh 3:13  And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.

The Muslim challenge and my answer:

(3) Your claim,  that then “the son come to earth to deliver the message while God remains in His throne,” demonstrates “Jesus cannot be God as you Christians claimed” is not correct according to the words of the Bible found in John 3:13.

John 3:13  And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.

The narrative in John chapter 3 records this claim by Jesus Christ, that while he was there speaking before them he was also as the Son of man in heaven at the very time he was then also upon this earth. This demonstrates that Jesus Christ possesses the incommunicable divine attribute of immensity.

Once  properly understood, this evidence resolves the issue of the Divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Jesus Christ is God the Son.
My Comment:
Contrary to many modern scholars who leave the last clause out of John 3:13, I firmly believe this clause belongs in the text. I have given the evidence in my book, The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge and also my digital Bible study resource, The Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury.

Joh 3:13  And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven. (KJV)

Joh 3:13 No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. (ESV)

Notice the ESV does not contain the words “even the Son of man which is in heaven.” (Emphasis added)
Here is the portion of the pertinent note which supports the retention of the words “which  is in heaven”:

which is in heaven. ?FS96C5, +Mat 2:13, Some authorities omit this phrase, but its retention may be argued for on the ground that these words may have been dropped out of the text at an early date as superfluous or objectionable (Thomas Whitlaw, commentary on John, p. 69).

That this text is weighty and difficult, is on this very account the more certainly genuine (Scrivener, Introduction, vol. 2, p. 360). While missing from some MSS., it is attested to by the early versions. The text figured early in controversy, including the Apolinarian, and in some instances even the orthodox were reluctant to cite it. The modern counterparts of the ancient Socinian and Arian heresies seem to have a particular attraction to this text.

Burgon has shown that it was cited many times by the church fathers. The manuscripts which omit this clause are convicted “of the deliberate suppression of one of the most mysterious, yet one of the most glorious, glimpses afforded to us in Scripture of the nature of the Savior, on the side of His Proper Divinity” (Scrivener, p. 361). Burgon, discussing this passage, notes it teaches that “Christ ’came down from heaven’ when he became incarnate: and having become incarnate, is said to have ’ascended up to Heaven,’ and ‘to be in Heaven,’ because ’the Son of Man,’ who was not in heaven before, by virtue of the hypostatical union was thenceforward evermore ’in heaven’” (Causes of Corruption in the Traditional Text, p. 223).

“Hypostatical union” is a term representing Christ as possessing two natures in one Person, human and divine. George Hutcheson explains, “The Son of God hath assumed the human nature into so strict a personal union, that what is proper to either nature is ascribed unto the person under whatsoever name; for, saith he, ’the Son of man which is in heaven,’ which is not to be understood, as if either his human nature came from heaven (for he is speaking of what still is there) or that his human nature were in every place, but that the same person who is the Son of man according to our nature is in heaven according to his divine nature, and yet but one person still” (Commentary, p. 46). God the Son possesses the incommunicable divine attribute of immensity (Psa 139:7 note. *Jer 23:24 note. +*Mat 28:19 note).

My Answer to Muslim challenge re Who controlled the universe when God was a man?

9-6-23 Answer to Muslim challenge re Who controlled the Universe when God was a man

The Muslim Challenge:

“When god comes into the body of a man, he becomes limited. Who controlled the universe during the 30 years when he was a man?” (TK on 9-2-23 at 6:14 AM)

My Response (9-2-23):

Joh 3:13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.

Col 1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
Col 1:17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

Php 2:6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
Php 2:7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:

Php 2:8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

Php 2:9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
Php 2:10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
Php 2:11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

TK replied (9-3-23):

Who controlled the universe when god became a man?

My Answer to TK’s Question:

From the very Bible passages I shared with you in my response above where I cited John 3:13, Colossians 1:16-17, and Philippians 2:6-11, the Bible teaches:

  1. Even while Jesus was here on earth as a man, He was at the same time also in heaven (John 3:13).
  2. The Bible teaches that Jesus is before all things (thus, Jesus is eternal and uncreated) and that by Jesus “all things consist” (KJV) (Colossians 1:17). Thus the whole universe is sustained and held together by our Lord Jesus Christ, who created all things (John 1:3. Hebrews 1:2. 2:10. Revelation 4:11.).

John 1:3 All things were created by him, and apart from him not one thing was created6 that has been created. “NET” is the Net Bible

Hebrews 1:2 in these last days he has spoken to us in a son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he created the world. (NET Bible)

Revelation 4:11 “You are worthy, our Lord and God,
to receive glory and honor and power,
since you created all things,
and because of your will they existed and were created!” (NET Bible)

  1. The Bible teaches that our Lord Jesus Christ, being–subsisting, or being essentially–in the form–essential form–of God (Philippians 2:6), took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men (Philippians 2:7). Therefore Jesus existed from eternity past as fully God yet came to earth and took upon Himself the form of a man, and so was truly and fully human, for the purpose of becoming “obedient unto death, even the death of the cross” (Philippians 2:8).

Therefore, Jesus in His full Deity was always in control of the universe for He did not give up His Deity when He became a man, as the Bible passages I cited above declare.

WZ responded to my comment:

‘son of man’

My response to WZ (9-5-23):

“Son of man” is a Messianic title applied in the Bible to our Lord Jesus Christ. The title has reference to Daniel 7:13, 14. The title emphasizes that our Lord Jesus Christ will reign forever in His kingdom still possessed of His visible human nature.

Daily Bible Nugget #774, Leviticus 19:13

The Nugget:

Lev 19:13  Thou shalt not defraud thy neighbour, neither rob him: the wages of him that is hired shall not abide with thee all night until the morning. (KJV)

Lev 19:13  “Do not rob or take advantage of anyone. Do not hold back the wages of someone you have hired, not even for one night. (GNB, Good News Bible)

My Comment:

Today is Labor Day. The Bible has much to say about labor and wages.

Many people think unions are a very bad thing. I remember my father told me, when I encountered the issue of being required to be a union member when I began working for Michigan Bell Telephone Company, that “The only reason we need unions is because of bad management.”

We still have bad management, just as we have bad government, when individuals and organizations fail to follow what God has commanded in the Bible.

I happened to speak to a customer while I was in The Tree of Life Bookstore who thought that abortion was the most significant moral issue of our time. I agreed that abortion is a significant issue, but I suggested that a careful study of the over-all emphasis within the Bible itself demonstrates that justice is the main issue. The customer thought otherwise. I replied that when Jesus listed the commandments, He included the command, “Defraud not.” That is recorded in Mark 10:19, where Jesus was quoting from Leviticus 19:13.

We need to preserve in our teaching and witness the balance of truth found in the Bible itself. Many Bible believing Christians have made the mistake of being “single issue” Christians, and as a result we have now largely lost the culture.

Labor Day ties in to the subject of justice, an issue too many churches and individual Bible believing Christians have missed. The way to learn what the Bible emphasizes is to (1) read the Bible, starting with the New Testament, long enough each day–at least twenty minutes, often enough each week–at least four days a week, on a  continuing basis. You will discover, as I did beginning now 70 years ago, that doing this will bring real change for the better to your life, but you will also begin to learn what the Bible itself emphasizes; (2) study  the Bible using Cross Reference Bible Study.

My experience of teaching public school in Detroit, Michigan from 1962 until 2001, brought me into contact with many school administrators. Most of them were quite helpful and supportive of me and the teachers I worked with. But from time to time I encountered the exceptions–administrators who were not supportive of their teachers and said so! I became a Union Representative and filed (and usually if not always won) grievances against administrators who improperly withheld individual teacher’s paychecks as a disciplinary tactic, a practice not authorized by the Teacher Contract. Several such administrators were active in their churches, so I shared with them what the Bible commands when it comes to paying workers on time. I even printed out the Bible cross-references with the full text of Scripture and left a copy on each administrator’s desk. Some of the cross references I shared are given below in the references for Leviticus 19:13,

The Nugget:

Job 23:12  Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food. (KJV)

Job 23:12 Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have laid up the words of his mouth more than the purpose of my own heart. (Darby)

Job 23:12 I have never gone against the orders of his lips; the words of his mouth have been stored up in my heart. (Basic English Bible)

My Comment:

Job states he treasured God’s Word more than his daily portion of food.

We have God’s written Word, the Bible, in convenient to read forms unknown and unimaginable in Job’s day!

We all need to get more serious and spend time daily with God by reading and hearing God’s Word in the Bible.

I have found by personal experience that to benefit the most from what the Bible has to offer, it is best to read it long enough each day (20 minutes or more) and often enough each week (at least four days a week) on a continuing basis. Start this process by reading from the New Testament first.

For me, after reading the New Testament and Proverbs this way for about two and a half months–from this time in August until the first week in November–I experienced the life-changing effects that knowing Christ (John 17:3) brings.

Very often, learning about and following through with a simple idea like this is all that it takes to uplift your life. Try it for yourself.

To study Job 23:12 much more deeply, read the cross references for this verse as given in the Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury, shared below:

The sign of Jonah disproves the crucifixion

8-18-23 The sign of Jonah disproves the crucifixion

My Comment:

Notice the Muslim poster added the word “alive” to the Bible texts. Adding to Scripture invalidates the Muslim claim!

The Muslim Claim:

Re: SIGN OF JONAS BY JESUS CHRIST DEBUNKED CRUCIFIXION

When he was asked for a sign – a prophecy, Jesus gave a sign – a prophecy of Jonas:

Matthew 12:38-40

38 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

39 Then certain of the Scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee.

40 For as Jonas was three (3) days and three (3) nights alive in the belly of a huge fish, so the son of man will be three (3) days and three (3) nights alive in the heart of the earth”.

MATHEW 12:38-40

Though a giant fish swallowed him, Jonas was alive in the belly of the giant fish for three days and three nights alive:

Jonah 1:1-17

17 Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the Fish For Three Days And Three Nights Alive.”

JONAH 1:17

While alive in the belly of the fish, Jonah earnestly prayed unto God and he was saved:

Jonah 2:1-10

1 Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish’s belly,

2 And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice.

3 For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me.

4 Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.

5 The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head.

6 I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God.

7 When my soul fainted within me I remembered the LORD: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple.

8 They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.

9 But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.

10 And the LORD spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.”

JONAH 2:1-10

Take Note:

Jonah Was In The Belly Of The Fish For Three Days And Three Nights Alive.

NOW:

To say the above Jesus’ prophecy of Jonas (Mathew 12:37-40) did not come to pass (failed), is to say Jesus is a FALSE and FAKE Prophet:

Deuteronomy 18:20-22

20 But the Prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.

21 And if thou say in thine heart, how shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken?

22 When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follows not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the Prophet hath spoken it presumptuously (falsely): thou shalt not be afraid of him”.

DEUTERONOMY 18:20-22

In one of his epistles, Paul enjoin Christians not to Despise Prophesying:

“Despise not Prophesyings.”

1 THESSALONIANS 5:20

YET;

The Disciples and all Christians, not only despises but completely rejected the prophecy- sign of Jonah by Jesus Christ.

Instead, Christians are boldly insisting that Jesus Christ died for 3 days and 3 nights, for atonement of their endless sins !!!

(Jesus lamentation in a Parable in Matthew 11:18-30)

Jesus Demonstrations To His Disciples At The Upper Chamber After The 3rd Day:

Luke 24:36-43

36 And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.

37 But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit.

38 And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? And why do thoughts arise in your hearts?

39 Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.

40 And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet.

41 And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat?

42 And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of a honeycomb.

43 And he took it, and did eat before them”.

LUKE 24:36-43

Again as the disciples believed him not, Jesus asked one of them to:

“Reach hither thy finger and behold my hands; and reach hither and thrust it into my side; and be not faithless”

JOHN 20:27-36

“..for a spirit (resurrected body) has no flesh and bones as you see me have”. LUKE 24:39-43

By his above demonstrations, Jesus Christ proved beyond any doubt that:

  1. His Effectual Fervent Prayers Availeth Him Much
  2. He Survived An Accursed Death
  3. He Neither Died Nor Resurrect
  4. He Is Not A Spirit
  5. He Is Not A Ghost
  6. He Is A Living Human Not A Spook

Sadly, both the Disciples and Christians believed Jesus not !!!

(Jesus lamentation in a Parable in Matthew 11:18-30)

My Response (9-18-23):

I have checked 24 English Bible translations for Jonah 1:17 (in some translations this text is given as Jonah 2:1), and NOT ONE of them reads “for three days and three nights ALIVE.”

The same holds true for Matthew 12:40. Not one translation reads “three (3) days and three (3) nights ALIVE in the heart of the earth”.

Therefore, your argument is mistaken because it is based on a false claim regarding what the Bible in both the Old Testament and the New Testament states.

Jonah 1:17

17 Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

King James Version

Matthew 12:40

40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

King James Version

DM responded to me (8-19-23):

Then why don’t you worship the risen Jonas also?

My response to DM (8-19-23):

Because Jonah is a type or picture of the then yet future reality of the bodily resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. The fact that the Lord Jesus Christ is to be worshipped demonstrates conclusively His Deity.

DM replied (8-19-23):

“The fact that the Lord Jesus Christ is to be worshipped . . .” Does not demonstrate his divinity in any way, shape or form.

It merely demonstrates that you believe that nonsense.

My response to DM (8-19-23):

That may be your opinion, but what I have stated is firmly grounded in the facts recorded in the New Testament and the Bible as a whole.

DM replied (8-19-23):

Believe what you want, in reality it makes no difference to me.

But I’ll still be telling you the truth, and anybody else who asks.

My response to DM (8-20-23):

I made the claim:

“The fact that the Lord Jesus Christ is to be worshipped demonstrates conclusively His Deity.”

You denied the claim by mere assertion with no evidence.

Jesus Himself asserted:

Mat 4:10  Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

In the New Testament are many occasions where Jesus Christ accepted worship, including:

Mat 14:33  Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.

Luke 24:52
52  And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy:
King James Version

If Jesus had rejected worship, as did the angel in the incident recorded about John in the book of Revelation, that would have proved Jesus to be just another man, a created being, to whom worship is not owed:

Revelation 19:10
10  And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.
King James Version

Revelation 22:8-9
8  And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things.
9  Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.
King James Version

Yet the Bible records that even the angels are commanded to worship Christ:

Hebrews 1:6
6  And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.
King James Version

Jesus Himself clearly declared:

John 5:23
23  That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.
King James Version

Just as the Father is owed divine worship, so Jesus is owed the same worship.

There is much more evidence in the Bible which supports my claim. I have shared enough of the evidence to establish my claim that this is what the Bible itself teaches.

What are the Sure Mercies of David?

Knowing the answer to this question will greatly help you to understand Bible prophecy, as demonstrated in a recent Facebook discussion I joined in with a few comments of my own:

8-15-23 What are the Sure Mercies of David

My Facebook friend, Duane Burgess, recently posted this on his Facebook page, and this led to quite a discussion!

SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT: Biblical Eschatology.

In sound biblical hermeneutics & exegesis there is no allegorizing, no spiritualizing and no replacement theology.

It has been wisely said, do not present your eschatology until you master Zechariah.

God has one Redeemed people, but He deals with the saints in various ways from generation to generation.

God also has unique distinctions for ethnic national Israel and for the Church.

The Church is not, in any way, Israel.

The Church has dealt with error from its beginning, 2000 years ago.

The churches got some things wrong and some things right.

Paul would establish local churches, then he would turn around and issue correction and even rebuke.

The Church fathers got some things wrong and some things right.

Premillennial eschatology is taught in Scripture and was believed in the early Church (Chiliasm).

The Pretribulational Rapture is taught in Scripture and was believed in the early Church.

The Church has mistakenly been moving away from sound biblical eschatology since the first century.

Amillennial and Post Millennial beliefs have no exegetical biblical support.

There is no biblical or historical fulfillment yet of Daniel’s 70th week. God has future plans for ethnic national Israel, to purge and cleanse that people in great tribulation, her time of Jacob’s trouble.

To get prophecy and Scripture right we must embrace God’s unique distinctions for ethnic national Israel and for the Church.

My Comment:

Included within Romans 9:24-33 is a most important statement:

Rom 11:29 For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. (ESV)

Much Bible prophecy is closely related to the Biblical Covenants already given, particularly the Abrahamic and the Davidic Covenants.

Isa 55:3 Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David. (KJV)

Bradley responded (8-10-23):

re read the convents. To ABRAHAM. I will bless those who bless you. You will be a blessing to ALL families of the earth. ALL here means every people group. Abraham was not a Jew or part of ISRAEL. Israel is 2 generation later. Noah surely wasn’t a Jew. What kind of Jew would name their son HAM!!!

My response to Bradley (8-15-23):

You still may be missing the full truth of Scripture. I mentioned two Biblical Covenants, the Abrahamic and the Davidic.

The New Testament book of Matthew begins with the statement:

Mat 1:1  The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

Carefully searching the Scriptures by means of cross reference Bible study will shed much light and provide a more accurate understanding of what the Bible itself actually teaches.

of David. Matthew necessarily proves the Saviour to be the son of David on account of the promise that he should, as David’s son, sit on David’s throne (Luk 1:32, Isa 9:6, 7) in fulfillment of the Davidic Covenant (+**2Sa 7:10).

of Abraham. Matthew proves the Saviour to be the son of Abraham as “the seed of Abraham in whom all nations of the earth should be blessed” (Gen 17:5, Gal 3:16, Rom 4:16) in fulfillment of the Abrahamic Covenant (+**Gen 12:2 note). Luke in his genealogy establishes our Saviour to be the son of Man (Luk 3:23; Luk 3:38) to prove him “the Seed of the Woman” (Gen 3:15), the “Second Adam” (1Co 15:47), the Redeemer of man, and the restorer of his lost inheritance (Psalms 8; Heb 2:5, 6, 7, 8).

The text I cited before, Isaiah 55:3, is key to the proper understanding of natural or ethnic Israel’s connection to these great eternal and unchangeable Covenants:

Isa 55:3  Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.

Just what are the “sure mercies of David”? These may be learned by a study of what the Bible itself says about them in other passages of Scripture, pointed to by cross references:

Isaiah 41:9
9  Thou whom I have taken from the ends of the earth, and called thee from the chief men thereof, and said unto thee, Thou art my servant; I have chosen thee, and not cast thee away.
King James Version

Leviticus 26:42
42  Then will I remember my covenant with Jacob, and also my covenant with Isaac, and also my covenant with Abraham will I remember; and I will remember the land.
King James Version

Leviticus 26:44
44  And yet for all that, when they be in the land of their enemies, I will not cast them away, neither will I abhor them, to destroy them utterly, and to break my covenant with them: for I am the LORD their God.
King James Version

Leviticus 26:45
45  But I will for their sakes remember the covenant of their ancestors, whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the heathen, that I might be their God: I am the LORD.
King James Version

1 Kings 11:39
39  And I will for this afflict the seed of David, but not for ever.
King James Version

Psalms 94:14
14  For the LORD will not cast off his people, neither will he forsake his inheritance.
King James Version

Jeremiah 33:20
20  Thus saith the LORD; If ye can break my covenant of the day, and my covenant of the night, and that there should not be day and night in their season;
King James Version
Jer 33:21  Then may also my covenant be broken with David my servant, that he should not have a son to reign upon his throne; and with the Levites the priests, my ministers.
Jer 33:25  Thus saith the LORD; If my covenant be not with day and night, and if I have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth;
Jer 33:26  Then will I cast away the seed of Jacob, and David my servant, so that I will not take any of his seed to be rulers over the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: for I will cause their captivity to return, and have mercy on them.

Zechariah 10:6
6  And I will strengthen the house of Judah, and I will save the house of Joseph, and I will bring them again to place them; for I have mercy upon them: and they shall be as though I had not cast them off: for I am the LORD their God, and will hear them.
King James Version

Mal 3:6  For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

Rom 11:1  I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.

Romans 11:28-29
28  As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers’ sakes.
29  For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.
King James Version

“Without repentance” is translated “are irrevocable” in the ESV.

Bradley stated (8-10-23):

It does not say ALL ETHIC ISRAEL will be saved. Read it again in context with the rest of Romans. Israel is out, the Gentiles will come in, Israel is back. In this way ALL ISRAEL WILL BE SAVED. In context Jews and Gentiles make up ALL ISRAEL. Any pagan grammar teacher can see the grammar use here.

For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel: [7] Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called. [8] That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed. Rom 9:6-8

My Comment (8-15-23):

Paul’s immediate reference to “but the children of the promise are counted for the seed” must be understood in accordance with the immediate following context stated in Romans 9:9,

Rom 9:9  For this is the word of promise, At this time will I come, and Sara shall have a son.

Jews and Gentiles do NOT constitute “all Israel.”

Paul cites the Bible prophecy when he wrote what we have in our Bibles as Romans 11:26, where Paul said:

Rom 11:26  And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:

Rom 11:27  For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins.

all Israel. This is a direct reference to the future conversion of the Jews in the land of Israel, and has nothing to do with “spiritual Israel” or the church in this age, as proven by Paul’s citation of Messianic prophecy later in this verse from Isa 59:19-20.

Isaiah 59:19-20

19  So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him.

20  And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the LORD. King James Version

Thus, though Ishmael was also a son of Abraham, his offspring or seed are not the children of promise for the promise was stated that through Sarah the promised seed will come.

Therefore, the Scripture does not teach that “all Israel” is composed of both Jews and Gentiles!

Daily Bible Nugget #772, Hebrews 4:12

The Nugget:

Heb 4:12  For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

From Ken Sagely’s Facebook post:

HEBREWS 4.12 For the Word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

JEREMIAH 15.16 Thy words were found, and I did eat them;
and Thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart:
for I am called by Thy name, O Lord God of hosts.

PSALM 119.18 Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous
things out of Thy law.

PSALM 119.130 The entrance of thy words giveth light; it
giveth understanding unto the simple.

PSALM 119.133 Order my steps in thy word: and let not any
iniquity have dominion over me.

The Spirit breathes upon the Word, And brings the truth to
sight: Precepts and promises afford A sanctifying light:
Let everlasting thanks be Thine! For such a bright display
As makes a world of darkness shine WIth beams of heavenly
day.
PSALM 117.1-2
O Praise the LORD. all ye nations:
Praise him, all ye people. For his
merciful kindness is great toward us:
Praise ye the LORD.

My Comment:

I lost this message yesterday but found it on Ken’s Facebook page today, so now here it is!

The Bible clearly tells us that (Hebrews 4:12) it will reach to the depths of our being to discern the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Read the Bible long enough each day (at least 20 minutes in total, not necessarily all at one stretch) and often enough each week (at least four days a week) continuously and it will produce an absolute change in your life! That happened for me starting in August of 1953, now 70 years ago, so I know absolutely by continuing experience that this is true. It is also confirmed by recent research reported by Barna and also Pew Research.

Jeremiah reports that he “ate” God’s Word (Jeremiah 15:16). We might say he “devoured” God’s Word. If you start with the New Testament as I did and read it continuously you will soon find it to be a necessary and tasty food that feeds your spiritual life and you will enjoy devouring its message (1 Peter 2:2).

If you will pray, as did David (Psalm 119:18), for the Lord to open your eyes as you read and study God’s Word, the Holy Spirit will work through His written Word in the Bible to give you greater understanding (1 Thessalonians 2:13).

David testified that God’s Word is a lamp to his feet and a light to his path (Psalm 119:105).

David further declared that God’s Word as it enters your life will give light, and give understanding to even the ordinary person as they read it (Psalm 119:130).

I am greatly chagrined and have said so in my note on Psalm 119:130 when any church, denomination, pastor, or religious organization or supposed authority takes it upon themselves to declare that they are the only authorized teaching authority and only they can correctly interpret the Bible (1 John 2:27). The Bible, properly read and carefully studied, explains itself to a much greater degree than they apparently realize because they themselves have not given themselves to the proper study of God’s Word. If your church teaches it is the only one true church outside of which is no salvation, flee that church! (Revelation 18:4)

When your steps–the direction of your life in your daily walk and pursuits–are guided by God’s Word (Psalm 119:133), God will work in your life (1 Thessalonians 2:13) to overcome the dominion and stronghold–even stranglehold–sin attempts to have over your life (John 8:31. John 8:32. 1 Corinthians 10:13. 1 Corinthians 15:58. Romans 6:14. Hebrews 12:14).

This explains why the research results discovered by Barna and also Pew Research are true–God’s Word promises to change your life if you will carefully read and heed what it says (2 Peter 3:18). Start seriously reading the Bible today!

The hog is unclean, so why do Christians eat pork?

7-28-23 The hog is unclean so why do Christians eat pork

The Muslim Challenge:

Deuteronomy 14:8  The hog is unclean, then why Christians eat pork??

My Response:

The answer to your question is given in many places in the New Testament.

Mar 7:17 After Jesus and his disciples had left the crowd and had gone into the house, they asked him what these sayings meant.
Mar 7:18 He answered, “Don’t you know what I am talking about by now? You surely know that the food you put into your mouth cannot make you unclean.
Mar 7:19 It doesn’t go into your heart, but into your stomach, and then out of your body.” By saying this, Jesus meant that all foods were fit to eat.
Mar 7:20 Then Jesus said: What comes from your heart is what makes you unclean.
Mar 7:21 Out of your heart come evil thoughts, vulgar deeds, stealing, murder,
Mar 7:22 unfaithfulness in marriage, greed, meanness, deceit, indecency, envy, insults, pride, and foolishness.
Mar 7:23 All of these come from your heart, and they are what make you unfit to worship God. (CEV, Contemporary English Version)

Notice verse 19 above. It is translated in the ESV (English Standard Version):

Mar 7:18 And he said to them, “Then are you also without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him,
Mar 7:19 since it enters not his heart but his stomach, and is expelled?” (Thus he declared all foods clean.)

A careful study of what the rest of the New Testament says about the subjects mentioned in Mark 7:19 and/or Deuteronomy 14:8 will enable anyone to learn that the food law or food restriction given in Deuteronomy 14:8 has been abolished by Jesus Christ because as He said, He came to fulfill the Law (Matthew 5:18). The passages of Scripture involved may be found by means of consulting more complete sources of Bible cross references.

Contrary to what some have claimed here, there are many truths taught in the Bible which can only be understood by necessary inference. Many readers who lack inference skills will not understand these truths unless they are taught in a more direct form and understood by the enlightenment provided by the Holy Spirit.

Cross Reference Bible Study from The Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury:

Deu 14:8  And the swine, because it divideth the hoof, yet cheweth not the cud, it is unclean unto you: ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcase.

Deuteronomy 14:8
the swine. Isa 65:4; Isa 66:3; Isa 66:17, Luk 15:15, 16, 2Pe 2:22.

unclean unto you. Deut 14:7, %Rom 14:14; %Rom 14:17, %1Co 8:8, Col 2:16, 17, %*1Ti 4:3, Heb 9:9, 10.

touch. Lev 11:26, 27.

My Comment:

When the text of Scripture reads “unclean unto you,” careful readers will know that “unto you” is directed and restricted to the author’s immediate intended audience.

This command, therefore, was given exclusively to the Hebrew or Jewish nation and people.

It applies to no other people outside the territory of the nation of Israel.

Therefore, the dietary law of Deuteronomy 14:8 does not apply to any Christians today, just as Jesus said in Mark 7:19.

Cross Reference Bible Study from The Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury:
