Applying the Story Behind the New Treasury

I shared recently the story behind The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge.

Very perceptive readers are able to read what I wrote and find many  practical ways to apply my experience to themselves and others to encourage more friends and contacts to become eager and self-motivated readers and students of the Bible.

I learned long ago, as a teacher, that many if not most students are helped more to learn what is being taught if what is taught is spelled out in careful detail.

So, in no particular order, here are some thoughts I have had:

  1. It is a good idea to introduce Bible study tools to young people at an early age. That way they have a whole lifetime to make use of them.
  2. Bible study tools like The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge are designed to help all Bible readers get more out of their Bible reading and Bible study.
  3. Parents can easily teach their children as part of their ongoing home education how to use The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge as they encourage their children to read and understand the Bible. I have found that children and young people can learn and understand way more than we often give them credit for!
  4. Parents who are fortunate enough to be able to home school their children can include learning how to study the Bible and how to use cross reference resources like The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge as part of that study.
  5. Pastors of churches should certainly be encouraging all under their spiritual care to read and study the Bible. A most important part of studying the Bible involves comparing Scripture with Scripture. It is well-known that Scripture is its own best interpreter. Cross reference Bible study using The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge may well be the best way to do this kind of Bible study.
  6. Sunday schools should offer Vacation Bible School programs on “How to Study the Bible” to classes for senior high school students. That is how I was introduced to the original Treasury of Scripture Knowledge. Unlike many other fads in our culture that have come and gone since I first learned about cross-reference Bible study nearly seven decades ago, this method of Bible study never goes out of date!
  7. It may well be possible that even younger students in late elementary and what used to be called junior high school can be taught to study the Bible using The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge.
  8. Every Christian will be far better grounded in their faith if they regularly study the Bible by means of cross-reference Bible study.
  9. A number of pastors have told me that even many pastors need to learn how to study the Bible using the cross references in The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge. Apparently, pastors are not taught this method of Bible study in Bible School or seminary. They can learn more about this method of Bible study right here on this site. Direct your pastor to this site and encourage him to read the oldest articles first where I delve into this matter of the importance of cross-reference Bible study.
  10. Make it a part of your outreach to others by sharing this site and the Bible study resource The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge with others. The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge is being made available in printed form once again. It is available for pre-order on Amazon right now, so search for it by author and title there. It is expected to be released in February, 2023.

Praise to God We Have Assurance Forever!

Thanks to Ken Sagely who posted this on Facebook:

Praise to God We Have Assurance Forever!
Come Thou Fount of every blessing,
tune my heart to sing Thy grace;
Streams of mercy, never ceasing,
Call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
Sung by flaming tongues above;
Praise His name–I’m fixed upon it–name of God’s redeeming love

Isaiah 12.2 Behold God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the Lord
Jehovah is my strength and my song; he also is become my
salvation.
Isaiah 32.17 And the work of righteousness shall be
peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and Assurance
for ever.
1 John 3:19 And hereby we know that we are of truth,
and shall Assure our hearts before him.
1 John 5.10-13 He who Believes in the Son of God has the witness in himself: he who
does not not Believe God has made Him a liar, because he has
not Believed the Testimony that God has given of His Son. 11
And this is the Testimony: that God has given us Eternal life,
and this Life is in His Son. 12 He who has the Son has life: he
who does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13 These
things I have written to you who Believe in the name of the Son of
God, that you may Know that you have Eternal life, and that you may
Continue to Believe in the name of the Son of God.!!

Psalm 107.8 Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His
Goodness, And for His wonderful works to the children of men!

The Story Behind the New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

PREFACE

I first learned of The Treasury of Scripture Knowledge in a vacation Bible school class on “How to Study the Bible” taught to senior high school students at the Highland Park Baptist Church by Miss Ellen Groh. Miss Groh was a student at the Detroit Bible College at the time and later went to the mission field. The pastor of Highland Park Baptist Church then was Dr. Lehman Strauss. That was the summer of 1955.

That Christmas my Aunt Ethel Sherwin sent me a Christmas card with a five-dollar bill. On December 24, 1955, I rode my bicycle four miles to the Grand Bible and Book Store in Highland Park and had Mr. Bob Humphries, the proprietor, locate a copy of the book for me. To this day I believe this Bible study tool was the best investment I have ever made for Bible study.

I was convinced that I needed to buy the book for myself when in Miss Groh’s class I looked up the encouraging references at 2 Timothy 1:7. During the years immediately after high school graduation, I used the volume as many as three hours a day in Bible study.

Over the years I have marked my copy of the Treasury, underlining particularly clear references, and noting printing errors as I found them. I added references to those already given in the Treasury in the wide margins of my study Bibles, as I prepared weekly Sunday school lessons over the years.

In the main reading room of the library at Bob Jones University I first saw Scott’s Commentary, and found this to be the primary source of the references in the Treasury. The Treasury has many additional references not found in Scott, though in some passages, such as Exodus 20, the reverse is true. I have since obtained several used editions of Scott’s Commentary. Many variations from Scott’s original references (over 4,000) and printing errors (nearly 1,000) present in the original edition of the Treasury have been corrected in this new edition by consulting this source.

This is the only new edition of The Treasury of Scripture Knowledge ever prepared. All previous editions are merely reprints of the original edition which first appeared about 1836. In my preparation of this new edition I have incorporated the results of my thirty years of personal Bible study using the original Treasury into this revised and expanded edition. I almost did not live to finish my editorial work on the New Treasury, for I was shot in the head by an unknown assailant on March 13, 1986, when I had typed the text only as far as 1 Samuel 3. The Lord miraculously spared my life. During my recovery I kept working on the book, often without income. This time away from teaching permitted a more thorough revision and expansion than I originally planned.

The most significant feature of the Treasury is its nearly exhaustive collection of cross-references. These references are the source of its enduring usefulness to every Bible student. Therefore it has been to the cross-references themselves that the greatest effort has been given in this new edition to make this excellent reference tool even more usable to the modern reader and student of the Bible. I have added over 100,000 new cross-references and supplied many more key words to the Bible text, making this the most complete collection of biblical cross-references ever published.

I am thankful to Miss Ellen Groh, Dr. Lehman Strauss, my Aunt Ethel, the proprietors of many Christian and secular bookstores, and to the present publisher for their encouragement to me in making this new volume possible. Of course, I must not neglect to mention the many hours of assistance in looking up cross-references, preparing and checking indexes, and proofreading provided by my wife, Susanne. In a volume of this size and magnitude it is impossible to produce an entirely error-free manuscript, I am sure, but every effort has been made to provide an accurate reference tool for personal Bible study.

Praise to God for His Guidance

Thank you to Ken Sagely for the following from his Facebook post I read today:

Praise to God for His Guidance

Psalm 48.14 For this God is our
God forever and ever; He will be
our guide even unto death.

Proverbs 3.5-6 Trust in the Lord
with all thine heart; and lean not
unto thy own understanding. 6
In all thy ways acknowledge Him,
and he shall direct thy paths.

Psalm 37.5 Commit thy way to the Lord;
trust also in Him and He shall bring to pass.

Jeremiah 10.23 O lord, I
know that the way of man is not
in himself: it is not in man that
walketh to direct his steps.

Hebrews 13.15 By Him, therefore
let us offer the sacrifice of praise
to God continually, that is, the fruit
of our lips giving thanks to His Name.

My Comment:

There is much to be learned and encouraged by in the Bible on the subject of divine guidance. I have posted extensively about this subject here before:

Divine Guidance

Daily Bible Nugget #714, Deuteronomy 25:13-16

The Nugget:

Deu 25:13  Thou shalt not have in thy bag divers weights, a great and a small.
Deu 25:14  Thou shalt not have in thine house divers measures, a great and a small.
Deu 25:15  But thou shalt have a perfect and just weight, a perfect and just measure shalt thou have: that thy days may be lengthened in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
Deu 25:16  For all that do such things, and all that do unrighteously, are an abomination unto the LORD thy God. (KJV)

Deu 25:13 Don’t try to cheat people by having two sets of weights or measures, one to get more when you are buying, and the other to give less when you are selling.
Deu 25:14 (SEE 25:13)
Deu 25:15 If you weigh and measure things honestly, the LORD your God will let you enjoy a long life in the land he is giving you.
Deu 25:16 But the LORD is disgusted with anyone who cheats or is dishonest. (CEV, Contemporary English Version)

My Comment:

Statistically, mathematically, honest mistakes should happen about an equal number of times in your favor and against you.

I have noticed for the past several years that pricing mistakes in the grocery store, for example, are uniformly against my favor.

That being the case, the mistakes are not random, but intentional. Thus, I as the customer am purposely being cheated.

Most aggravating is what happens when I buy apples in bulk from a bulk food store or an apple orchard. We are almost always short-changed in this transaction. The bushel baskets are not filled to heaping full like they should be. The half-bushel bags will vary in weight from 18 to 22 pounds, most filled to the lower range. That has presented a problem when my wife has planned to make a specific quantity of apple pie filling to fill a given number of empty canning jars she has available. Because we were shorted, it looks like there will be a number of jars that remain empty.

Most people, I would guess, would consider this a small matter.

But those who have read their Bible carefully will know the Bible has much to say about this and it is not a small matter.

In very plain English, the Bible tells us that God hates cheaters:

Deuteronomy 25:16  The LORD hates people who cheat. (GNB, Good News Bible)

At one point when Jesus was enumerating the commandments, He included the commandment, “Defraud not” (Mark 10:19):

Mark 10:19  Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother. (KJV, boldface emphasis added)

Now where did Jesus get the commandment, “Defraud not,” from? A little study using Bible cross references will lead to the source of this quotation in Leviticus 19:13,

Lev 19:13  Thou shalt not defraud thy neighbour, neither rob him: the wages of him that is hired shall not abide with thee all night until the morning.

Jesus has told us in equally plain language how we are to engage in business transactions with others:

Luke 6:38  Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again. (KJV)

Luke 6:38 If you give to others, you will be given a full amount in return. It will be packed down, shaken together, and spilling over into your lap. The way you treat others is the way you will be treated. (CEV)

Luke 6:38  Give to others, and God will give to you. Indeed, you will receive a full measure, a generous helping, poured into your hands—all that you can hold. The measure you use for others is the one that God will use for you.” (GNB, Good News Bible)

Daily Bible Nugget #713, Psalm 37:7

The Nugget:

Psa 37:7  Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass. (KJV)

Psa 37:7 Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices! (ESV)

Psa 37:7  Surrender yourself to the LORD, and wait patiently for him. Do not be preoccupied with an evildoer who succeeds in his way when he carries out his schemes. (GW, God’s Word translation)

Psa 37:7 Be patient and trust the LORD. Don’t let it bother you when all goes well for those who do sinful things. (CEV, Contemporary English Version)

Daily Bible Nugget #712, Luke 6:22

The Nugget:

Luk 6:22  Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man’s sake.
Luk 6:23  Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets. (KJV)

Luk 6:22 Blessed are you when people hate you and exclude you and denounce you, and spurn your name as evil, for the sake of the Son of Man.
Luk 6:23 Burst into joy on that day and leap for ecstasy, for your reward will be rich in heaven; for this is the way your forefathers used to treat the prophets. (Williams NT)

Luk 6:22 God will bless you when others hate you and won’t have anything to do with you. God will bless you when people insult you and say cruel things about you, all because you are a follower of the Son of Man.
Luk 6:23 Long ago your own people did these same things to the prophets. So when this happens to you, be happy and jump for joy! You will have a great reward in heaven. (CEV, Contemporary English Version)

My Comment:

If you take spiritual things seriously, if you not only read the Bible but study it, and live according to what it says, you will find from time to time that some people, even church people, will shun and exclude you from their fellowship. Should this happen to you, take heart and as Jesus said, be happy and jump for joy, for you will have a great reward in heaven.

Such a thing should not happen in a genuinely Bible-believing, Bible-obeying church. But sometimes it does. When it does happen, I suspect that group of people and sometimes even the Pastor or Elder board are not heeding Romans 15:7,

Rom 15:7  Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God. (KJV)

Rom 15:7 Therefore, practice receiving one another into full Christian fellowship, just as Christ has so received you to Himself. (Williams NT)

Rom 15:7 Honor God by accepting each other, as Christ has accepted you. (CEV, Contemporary English Version)

I have thoroughly discussed Romans 15:7 and its cross references in posts found in the category “Verse by verse studies” linked at the right.

Sometimes, God may use such instances of rejection in your life, even involving non-church settings, and even personal relationships, to guide or even force you to go in an altogether different direction than you may have foreseen or planned for. This has happened to me. Do not despair, but stay committed and obedient to God and His written word in the Bible. Continue to stay close to Him!

Amazing Grace

11-14-22 Amazing Grace

Thanks to Ken Sagely for this contribution! I saw it on Facebook this morning. There is an inspiring story behind this great hymn, a hymn written by a once slave-ship captain who was converted to Christ and was thereafter a remarkably changed man who was instrumental in England for ending the slave trade.

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me!

I was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.

The Lord’s Day

Acts 13.38 Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins.

John 1.29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world!

1 John 2.12 I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for His name’s sake.

Ephesians 1.6-7 To the praise of the glory of his Grace wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved: 7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins ,according to the riches of his Grace;

Ephesians 2.8 For by Grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves ; it is the gift of God; 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Ephesians 2.5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by Grace are ye saved) v7 That in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His Grace in his kindness toward us, through Christ Jesus.

Romans 6.14 For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under the law, but under Grace.

Heb 4.16 Let us come boldly unto the throne of Grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find Grace to help in time of need.

Through many dangers, toils, and snares,
I have already come;

Tis Grace that hath brought me safe this far,
And Grace will lead me home.

Daily Bible Nugget #711, 1 John 5:13

The Nugget:

1Jn 5:13  These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

My Comment:

1 John 5:13 is preceded by a most important context:

1Jn 5:12  He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

We need to ask of ourselves, “Do I have the Son?” when we read 1 John 5:12.

On the morning of November 7, 1953, now 69 years ago, I asked myself the equivalent of this question while I was out delivering The Detroit Shopping News, a circular that was issued twice a week. I delivered this paper to about 300 homes.

On that cloudy Saturday morning I was thinking about the many passages I had been reading from my pocket New Testament the weeks and months before. I had never before considered whether or not I “had the Son.” Although I had been attending Sunday school at Highland Park Baptist Church since my parents carried me there as an infant, I realized that morning of November 7, 1953, that I had never personally received Jesus Christ into my life (John 1:10, 11, 12).

I paused a few moments after crossing the street in the middle of the block on Lumpkin Street under a young oak tree while folding the next paper before setting it on the porch of the next home. I realized that I needed to be saved. From the Scriptures I had been reading diligently and extensively in the immediately preceding weeks I knew I needed to commit my life to the Lord Jesus Christ and trust Him alone for salvation. So I did that, right then and there.

That evening I attended with other members of the MYF, or Methodist Youth Fellowship, the monthly Holiness Youth Crusade rally at the Detroit Institute of Arts. I was to represent my local MYF youth group in a Bible quiz. I had “won” the quiz given at my local youth group at Thoburn Methodist Church. I think the Lord must have left all the smart kids home the day of that local quiz or I would not have won that local event.

The question asked of me that night at the Holiness Youth Crusade was, “True or False. The words ‘Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved’ are found in the Gospels.” I answered, “True.”

Acts 16:30  And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?
Acts 16:31  And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

I did not win the Bulova watch.

That day was not a total loss, for earlier that day I did come to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and received then and still have today the gift of eternal life.

Some churches, maybe yours, mistakenly teach that you cannot know for sure that you have eternal life until after you die.

The Bible itself clearly proclaims that you may know that you now have eternal life:

Joh 5:24  Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. (KJV)

Joh 5:24 Amen, amen, I say unto you that he who heareth my word and believeth him that sent me hath life everlasting: and cometh not into judgment, but is passed from death to life. (DRB, 1899 Douay-Rheims Bible)

Joh 5:24 Truly I say to you, The man whose ears are open to my word and who has faith in him who sent me, has eternal life; he will not be judged, but has come from death into life. (Basic English Bible)

Joh 5:24  “Most certainly I tell you, he who hears my word, and believes him who sent me, has eternal life, and doesn’t come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life. (WEB, World English Bible)

Joh 5:24 I tell you for certain that everyone who hears my message and has faith in the one who sent me has eternal life and will never be condemned. They have already gone from death to life. (CEV, Contemporary English Version)

Notice carefully that all these English versions and translations state that we can now in this life know that we “have eternal life,” not “maybe might have” or “won’t know until we die and go to heaven that we will have eternal life.” The Bible clearly states it is possible for you to know right now in this life that you have eternal life.

Do you know you have eternal life?

Daily Bible Nugget #710, Psalm 37:6

The Nugget:

Psa 37:6  And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday. (KJV)

Psa 37:5  Give yourself to the LORD; trust in him, and he will help you;
Psa 37:6  he will make your righteousness shine like the noonday sun. (GNB, Good News Bible)

Psa 37:5 Let the LORD lead you and trust him to help.
Psa 37:6 Then it will be as clear as the noonday sun that you were right. (CEV, Contemporary English Version)

My Comment:

The best commentary on the Bible is the Bible itself. Scripture interprets Scripture. I have found so far, after studying the Bible this way intensively for 67 years, that the best way to engage the Scripture is by carefully studying what are called cross references given for the verse I want to understand better and appreciate more. Here are the cross references I have collected in The Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury for Psalm 37:6,

Psalms 37:6
