Daily Bible Nugget #921, Psalm 34:6

The Nugget:

Psa 34:6  This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles. (KJV)

Psa 34:6  Friendless folk may still call upon the Lord and gain his ear, and be rescued from all their afflictions. (Knox translation)

Psa 34:6 This poor one called, and Jehovah heard, And from all his distresses saved him. (YLT, Young’s Literal Translation)

Psa 34:6  This poor man cried, and the Lord hearkened to him, and delivered him out of all his afflictions. (LXX., Brenton translation)

Psa 34:6  The helpless call to him, and he answers; he saves them from all their troubles. (GNB, Good News Bible)

Psa 34:6 This afflicted one called, and Jehovah heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles. (Darby translation)

Psa 34:6  Here is a poor man who called out. The LORD heard him and saved him from all his troubles. (GW, God’s Word translation)

Psa 34:6 This poor man’s cry came before the Lord, and he gave him salvation from all his troubles. (BBE, Bible in Basic English)

Psa 34:6  As a poor, helpless man I prayed to the LORD, and he heard me. He saved me from all my troubles. (ERV, Easy to Read Version)

Psa 34:6 I was a nobody, but I prayed, and the LORD saved me from all my troubles. (CEV, Contemporary English Version)

My Comment:

David experienced remarkable deliverance from a difficult situation. He prayed, and the LORD saved him from all his troubles. From time to time God still delivers us from difficult situations in answer to our prayers, and the prayers of others for us. This may not be a daily experience, but looking back over many years I can see how this has been my experience at crucial turning points that were unseen at the time but obvious now.

To dig deeper into the subjects or themes mentioned in Psalm 34:6, read and study the cross references given below now more complete than they were in the Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury:

Daily Bible Nugget #920, Psalm 34:5

The Nugget:

Psa 34:5  Ever look to him, and in him find happiness; here is no room for downcast looks. (Knox translation)

Psa 34:5 They looked expectingly unto Him, And they became bright, And their faces are not ashamed. (YLT, Young’s Literal Translation)

Psa 34:5 They looked to Him and were filled with light; and their faces were not ashamed. (LITV, Literal translation of the Holy Bible)

Psa 34:5  The oppressed look to him and are glad; they will never be disappointed. (GNB, Good News Bible)

Psa 34:5 Let your eyes be turned to him and you will have light, and your faces will not be shamed. (BBE, Bible in Basic English)

Psa 34:5  All who look to him will be radiant. Their faces will never be covered with shame. (GW, God’s Word translation)

Psa 34:5  If you look to him for help, he will put a smile on your face. You will have no need to be ashamed. (ERV, Easy to Read Version)

Psa 34:5 Keep your eyes on the LORD! You will shine like the sun and never blush with shame. (CEV, Contemporary English Version)

My Comment:

The twelve English Bible translations or versions shared above each contribute to a fuller understanding of the meanings of the original Hebrew text as well as the Greek and Latin translations of Psalm 34:5. As I read each translation, I see connections with other passages of Scripture not evident to me before that need to be linked in the cross references for Psalm 34:5, now newly expanded to supplement those I already furnished in the Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury.

lightened. or, flowed unto him. The Hebrew word nahar sometimes means “to flow, to flow together,” as in Isa 2:2, Jer 31:12; Jer 51:44; but it also means “to shine, to be bright;” and thence, “to be cheered, to rejoice,” Isa 60:5. This is probably the idea here, for this interpretation is better suited to the connection in which the word occurs (Barnes Notes).  *Ezr 9:8, *Isa 49:10; +*Isa 60:5, +*2Co 3:18.

Daily Bible Nugget #919, Psalm 34:4

The Nugget:

Psa 34:4  I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. (KJV)

Psa 34:4 Did I not look to the Lord, and find a hearing; did he not deliver me from all my terrors? (Knox translation)

Psa 34:4 I sought Jehovah, and He answered me, And from all my fears did deliver me. (YLT, Young’s Literal Translation)

Psa 34:4  I prayed to the LORD, and he answered me; he freed me from all my fears. (GNB, Good News Bible)

Psa 34:4  I went to the LORD for help. He answered me and rescued me from all my fears. (GW, God’s Word translation)

Psa 34:4 I was searching for the Lord, and he gave ear to my voice, and made me free from all my fears. (BBE, Bible in Basic English)

Psa 34:4  I sought the Lord diligently, and he hearkened to me, and delivered me from all my sojournings. (LXX., Brenton translation)

Psa 34:4  I went to the LORD for help, and he listened. He saved me from all that I fear. (ERV, Easy to Read Version)

Psa 34:4 I asked the LORD for help, and he saved me from all my fears. (CEV, Contemporary English Version)

My Comment:

Scripture must be understood in its historical context. Sometimes this means that a promise or experience related in the Bible may not always apply to us. Nevertheless, the Bible was written “for our learning, that through patience and through comfort of the scriptures we might have hope” (Romans 15:4, ASV). The ERV (Easy to Read Version) reads: “Everything that was written in the past was written to teach us. Those things were written so that we could have hope. That hope comes from the patience and encouragement that the Scriptures give us.”

There is a factor I have rarely seen addressed called “The Silence of God.” Sir Robert Anderson more than a century ago wrote a book with that title. I have included notes and cross references on that subject in the Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury (see the notes at Psalm 50:3, Isaiah 8:17, and Isaiah 61:2). The factor of the silence of God can be very disturbing when we learn about it. It shows that many of our hymns and Gospel songs do not actually express the truth as we normally experience it ourselves. I may have a book with the title, Remarkable Answers to Prayer. But that is the point: such answers are remarkable because they are rare.

It may be that the great promises Jesus gave to His disciples (see +**Matthew 17:20, the cross references given for the keyword faith) were fully valid for that time while the promise (%Matthew 21:43. Acts 3:19, 20, 21) was proclaimed by the original Apostles. Miracles still do happen today in our time in answer to prayer, but experience bears out that such answers do not always take place. Even in the Bible miracles took place much less often across the historical time span it covers: they took place under Elijah and Elisha, and of course during the ministry of our Lord Jesus Christ, and are also recorded in the book of Acts under the ministry of Peter and Paul.

Despite all these cautionary factors, don’t miss out on the encouraging themes present in the newly expanded cross references for Psalm 34:4 as given below, expanded beyond what is currently in the Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury:

Daily Bible Nugget #918, Psalm 34:3

The Nugget:

Psa 34:3  O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together. (KJV)

Psa 34:3 O magnify Jehovah with me; and let us exalt His name together. (LITV, Literal translation of the Holy Bible)

Psa 34:3 Ascribe ye greatness to Jehovah with me, And we exalt His name together. (YLT, Young’s Literal Translation)

Psa 34:3 O give praise to the Lord with me; let us be witnesses together of his great name. (BBE, Bible in Basic English)

Psa 34:3  Proclaim with me the LORD’s greatness; let us praise his name together! (GNB, Good News Bible)

Psa 34:3  Praise the LORD’S greatness with me. Let us highly honor his name together. (GW, God’s Word translation)

Psa 34:3  Come, sing the Lord’s praise with me, let us extol his name together. (Knox translation)

Psa 34:3 Honor the LORD with me! Celebrate his great name. (CEV, Contemporary English Version)

My Comment:

Above, I have shared Psalm 34:3 from eight English translations. This time I shared from the Ronald Knox translation: The Holy Bible: A translation from the Latin Vulgate in the light of the Hebrew and Greek originals; Authorized by the hierarchy of England and Wales and the hierarchy of Scotland. Sheed & Ward, Inc. New York, 1956.

The Knox translation is one of my favorite English Bible translations. I like the way Monsignor Knox renders the Acrostic Psalms in such a manner as to display their alphabetical structure by boldfacing the initial letter of each verse with a sequential English letter of the alphabet.  I bought this copy on 7-11-57 while working at the Michigan Bell Telephone Company.

I noticed that the mail distributor was spending much free time playing cards. I suggested that with the extra time he had available between mail runs he could better use his time reading the Bible. He said he could not do that because he was Roman Catholic. I said I would loan him my copy of a Roman Catholic Bible I had just purchased, a modern English version. He agreed to read it. I suggested that he read and reread the Gospel of John. He did that. When it came time that he was to be transferred to a different telephone office, he returned my Knox Bible. He had tears in his eyes. He said the Gospel of John repeatedly said “Believe, Believe, Believe.” Then he said, “Why does my church not emphasize this?” I suggested that he continue reading the Bible, and that is the last I saw of him. I pray he found true faith in our  Lord Jesus Christ by reading the Bible for himself.

Several times since then I have shared the Knox translation, especially the New Testament edition, with Roman Catholics. I gave a copy to one of my junior high school students when the family lost most of their possessions when their home burned down one night while they slept. Fortunately they escaped with their lives.

I shared a copy of the  Knox New Testament with a local businessman who became very upset at the scandals involving his church that made the news repeatedly. I hope he has found true faith in Christ as a result of reading the New Testament.

I might as well mention that I have never suggested to any of my Roman Catholic friends, fellow-workers, or students in public school that they should find a different church to attend. I leave that up to the working of the Holy Spirit.

Here are the newly expanded cross references for Psalm 34:3 I have prepared for the Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury:

Daily Bible Nugget #917, Psalm 34:2

The Nugget:

Psa 34:2  My soul shall make her boast in the LORD: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad. (KJV)

Psa 34:2  I’m boasting of you and all your works, so let all who are discouraged take heart. (TPT, The Passion Translation)

Psa 34:2  My soul will boast in the LORD; let the afflicted hear and rejoice. (NIV, New International Version)

Psa 34:2 I will boast in the LORD;
let the oppressed hear and rejoice! (NET Bible)

Psa 34:2  My soul will glory in the LORD; humble people will be glad to hear it. (Beck translation)

Psa 34:2  I will praise him for what he has done; may all who are oppressed listen and be glad! (GNB, Good News Bible)

Psa 34:2 My soul will say great things of the Lord: the poor in spirit will have knowledge of it and be glad. (BBE, Bible in Basic English)

Psa 34:2  Humble people, listen and be happy, while I brag about the LORD. (ERV, Easy to Read Version)

Psa 34:2 My soul shall make its boast in Jehovah: the meek shall hear, and rejoice. (Darby translation)

Psa 34:2 With all my heart, I will praise the LORD. Let all who are helpless, listen and be glad. (CEV, Contemporary English Version)

My Comment:

David had a testimony to share. He was eager to share his experience of God’s faithfulness and deliverance with others. Humble people will be glad to hear what he has to say.

This echoes a pattern in life for those who know the Lord. Our lives will be a testimony to God’s grace and faithfulness. I have experienced instances where others knew where I stood immediately without  my ever saying a word about it. This has been true of fellow employees when I worked for the Michigan Bell Telephone Company. It has often been true of my students when I taught at the high school level in Detroit. The result has sometimes been that lives have been turned around for the better and souls have come to a saving knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom all credit and praise belongs.

Dig deeper into what and where else the Bible has to say on the subjects found at Psalm 34:2 by reading and studying the cross references newly expanded for  Psalm 34:2 for the Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury:

Daily Bible Nugget #916, Psalm 34:1

The Nugget:

Psalm 34:1  I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth. (KJV)

Psalm 34:1  I will bless Jehovah at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth. (Darby translation)

Psalm 34:1  I will praise the LORD at all times. I will never stop singing his praises. (ERV, Easy to Read Version)

My Comment:

Even in difficulty, and here celebrating deliverance from difficulty, David praised the Lord.

Reading and studying the cross references for Psalm 34:1 will acquaint you with other passages in the Bible which affirm what is expressed here. I believe that the study of  Psalm 34 as a whole will help every Bible reader to grow spiritually.

Daily Bible Nugget #915, Psalm 34:1 Title

The Nugget:

Psalm 34:1  I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth. (KJV)

Psalm 34:1  I will praise the LORD at all times. I will never stop singing his praises. (ERV, Easy to Read Version)

Psalm 34:1  I will always praise the LORD. (CEV, Contemporary English Version)

The Title of  Psalm 34:1

Psa 34:1  A Psalm of David, when he changed his behaviour before Abimelech; who drove him away, and he departed. (KJV)

Psa 34:1  A song of David when he pretended to be crazy so that Abimelech would send him away, which he did. (ERV)

Psa 34:1 (Written by David when he pretended to be crazy in front of Abimelech, so that Abimelech would send him away, and David could leave.) (CEV)

My Comment:

Psalm 34 is a very encouraging Psalm. I may post each of its verses with the associated cross references, one verse each day for 22 days. It is well worth our careful study.

The Psalm chapter outline and its title is readily visible in the printed edition of The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge. I suspect there is an e-Sword feature that very few users notice. In the “Commentaries” view it is possible to see for the Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury the chapter outline as well as notes on the  Psalm title when there is one. This information becomes visible when the “C” option (of “B,” “C,” “V” is selected, where “B” displays book notes; “C” displays chapter notes; “V” displays verse notes and cross references). Here is the chapter information for Psalm 34:

Psalms 34
David praises God, and exhorts others, from his own experience, to bless and trust in him, 1-10, He teaches the fear of God; and contrasts the privileges of the righteous with the miseries of the wicked, 11-22.

(Title.) A.M. 2942, B.C. 1062, Anno Sauli Regis Israelitarum, 34.

when. 1Sa 21:10—1Sa 22:1.

Abimelech. or, Achish. Note: Achish, king of Gath, is probably here called Abimelech, because that was a common name of the Philistine kings (see the parallel texts). This is the second of the acrostic, or alphabetical Psalms (the first being Psalms 25); each verse beginning consecutively with a letter of the Hebrew alphabet. The verse, however, which begins with wav, and which should come in between the fifth and sixth, is totally wanting; but as the 22nd, which now begins with pay, podeh, “redeemeth,” is entirely out of the series, it is not improbable that it was originally written oophodeh, “and redeemeth,” and occupied that situation, in which connection it reads admirably. Gen 20:2; Gen 26:1; Gen 26:26 note. 1Sa 21:10; 1Sa 21:13, 14, 15; 1Sa 22:1; 1Sa 29:8, Pro 29:25.

I will delve deeper into Psalm 34:1 itself in my next post.

Pro 28:26  Whoever trusts his own heart is a fool. Whoever walks in wisdom will survive. (GW, God’s Word translation)

Pro 28:26 Only fools would trust what they alone think, but if you live by wisdom, you will do all right. (CEV, Contemporary English Version)

My Comment:

The Bible is a great source of wisdom, guidance, and comfort. It is helpful to read it repeatedly. It is helpful to read more than one English Bible translation or version. I have given Proverbs 28:26 in ten translations or versions above, each chosen for the additional insight it provides.

Reading and studying the cross references for a verse of Scripture will help in seeing what the rest of the Bible says about its subjects or themes.

Here are the cross references I have newly gathered for Proverbs 28:26 for the Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury:

Pro 28:28 When crooks are in control, everyone tries to hide, but when they lose power, good people are everywhere. (CEV, Contemporary English Version)

My Comment:

Proverbs 28:28 surely has a political application today. It is my hope and prayer that righteousness will prevail. Many are mislead by what is reported in the usual mainstream media sources. Too often editorial slant has taken over the newsroom. Propaganda often accompanies what is supposed to be news. More readers and viewers need to learn to distinguish truth from propaganda. I have reported “Nonsense in the News” several times in the past on this site.

I find that Mark Levin is one of the best sources to learn what is going on and what is behind what is going on. I hear him on the radio each evening except when his valuable program is blocked by sports coverage. Greg Hunter is another source I find to be reliable. Unfortunately, Greg Hunter recently suffered a heart attack so he has had to reduce how much he covers, though he has good guests and seems to be gathering more strength at his USA Watchdog site.

Daily Bible Nugget #912, Proverbs 28:27

The Nugget:

Pro 28:27  He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack: but he that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse. (KJV)

Pro 28:27  He that gives to the poor shall not be in want: but he that turns away his eye from him shall be in great distress. (LXX. Brenton translation)

Pro 28:27 He who gives to the poor will never be in need, but great curses will be on him who gives no attention to them. (BBE, Bible in Basic English)

Pro 28:27  Give to the poor and you will never be in need. If you close your eyes to the poor, many people will curse you. (GNB, Good News Bible)

Pro 28:27  Whoever gives to the poor lacks nothing. Whoever ignores the poor receives many curses. (GW, God’s Word translation)

Pro 28:27  Whoever gives to the poor will have plenty. Whoever refuses to help them will get nothing but curses. (ERV, Easy to Read Version)

Pro 28:27 Giving to the poor will keep you from poverty, but if you close your eyes to their needs, everyone will curse you. (CEV, Contemporary English Version)

My Comment:

I happened upon this verse during a recent evening home Bible study, something my wife and I do each evening. We encountered a mistake in the references given for the key words that giveth unto the  poor where the reference to Ezekiel 18:10 in The Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury should read Ezekiel 18:16. I will correct this mistake in the references as given below and further expand the references given for this verse at the same time.

When reading the individual proverbs collected in the book of Proverbs it is important to remember that these are statements of great wisdom that are generally true, but not absolute promises applicable to every case. Nevertheless, it is a good idea to read the book of Proverbs daily, one chapter a day. Read the chapter that corresponds to each day’s date. That way you will read the book of Proverbs through once a month. That was the advice I received as a high school student from my high school Sunday school teachers Dean Sawdon and John Boyko many years ago at the Highland Park Baptist Church in Detroit,  Michigan, then located at 25 Ford Avenue, Highland Park, Michigan. I for many years followed that advice.

To dig deeper into Proverbs 28:27, read the corrected and expanded cross references for this verse as newly prepared for The Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury:
