The Texts:
The prediction:
Zec 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass. (KJV)
The fulfilment:
Mat 21:4 All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying,
Mat 21:5 Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass. (KJV)
Explanatory Commentary:
Zechariah 9:9 foretells the first coming of the Messiah.
See Micah 5:2, where we have the going forth from Bethlehem (Matthew 2:1). In Matthew 21:5, we have the coming to Jerusalem. Between these lay all the events which we call “the first advent.” So it will be at “the second advent” with its many events, before Zechariah 9:10 is fulfilled.
The Texts:
Zec 9:10 And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem, and the battle bow shall be cut off: and he shall speak peace unto the heathen: and his dominion shall be from sea even to sea, and from the river even to the ends of the earth. (KJV)
Zec 9:10 And he shall destroy the chariots out of Ephraim, and the horse out of Jerusalem, and the bow of war shall be utterly destroyed; and there shall be abundance and peace out of the nations; and he shall rule over the waters as far as the sea, and the rivers to the ends of the earth. (LXX., Brenton translation)
Explanatory Commentary:
