Daily Bible Nugget #689, Isaiah 26:9

The Nugget:

Isa 26:9  With my soul have I desired thee in the night; yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee early: for when thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.

My Comment:

There are great spiritual riches waiting to be mined by a careful study of Isaiah 26:9.

One of the very best ways to access these spiritual riches is to make use of the Bible study tool, The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge. Unfortunately, due to a publisher oversight, digital or electronic versions of the New Treasury fail to “deliver the goods.” Let me share what you may be missing.

Please do not be distracted by the quantity of cross references I have gathered for Isaiah 26:9. They are worthy of close study and attention. But for now, notice the Topic Number designation “T1392″ which follows the first key words, “With my.” Skip down to my brief note below which explains what this refers to.

Here is what I have presented for Isaiah 26:9 in the Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury:

It is not immediately evident to readers and users of the New Treasury or the Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury as to what the TOPIC NUMBER 1392 actually refers to, so they miss a literal boat load of spiritual blessings by missing the connection!

The connection is two-fold:

(1) With the soul. Isaiah 26:9

Still not very enlightening until or unless you access the original Topic Number Index in the printed editions of the New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge which immediately on page 1599 lets the reader know that “With the soul, Isaiah 26:9” has reference to one of a great many listed SPIRITUAL CONDITIONS OF PRAYER. The listing starts at Topic Number 1301 and extends to Topic Number 1429 on page 1600.

1301 Abiding in Jesus, John 15:7.
1302. Accordance with the will of God. 1 John 5:14.
1303. Afraid. Hab 3:2.
1304. Agony. Luke 22:44.
1305. Agreement. Matthew 18:19

***

1312. Believing. Mark 11:24.

***

1323. With delight in the Lord. Psalm 37:4.

***

1386. Seeking. 2 Chronicles 7:14.

***

1392. With the soul. Isaiah 26:9.

If you managed to read this far, I trust you see the spiritual value of studying these Spiritual Conditions of Prayer as given in The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge and the Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury.

Good Morning Jerry, how can I get hold of the Topical Number Index? As you’ve pointed out it’s not available electronically in the software where I’ve purchased the Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury, neither listed in my printed copy of Nelson’s Cross-Reference Guide to the Bible (one of your earlier versions). However to make the most of what you’ve pointed out in this blog entry I’d like to get a copy if possible? Thank you, Christina.

  2. Jerry says:

    Dear Christina,

The full Topic Number Index is available in the e-Sword premium module, The Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury.

To access this index, (1) click on “UCRT Indexes” in the Dictionaries panel, usually the lower left-hand quadrant of the e-Sword screen; (2) click on the icon that looks like an open book: this will open an alphabetical list of subjects as a column displayed at the right side of the quadrant; (3) Scroll down to the letter T1, which begins the Topic Number Listing. (4) From within the text of The Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury, Topic Numbers appear in red. If you click on the number, it will open the appropriate or indicated entry in the dictionary view.

Thank you for asking a very good question. Ask more questions should you need to, and I will try to give additional help.

I would have responded sooner, but my Internet access was totally off for more than a week and was just restored late yesterday.

  3. Christina Gilbert says:

Thanks for this Jerry, I’ve got the premium version on my e-Sword HD for ipad, and now stepped through what you have explained. It’s cumbersome and not nearly as smooth as I think it should be to retrieve the Topic Number Index, though it works when pulling up a “T” number, I’d like to see how the “Ts” are categorised under the headings etc. which I can’t see in this format. I’m “attached” to your UCRT and would dearly like to use it to its fullest extent but this particular component is clumsy. So to get around this I’m close to purchasing a 2nd hand copy (printed edition) of the New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge (from the USA to Australia) as you’ve pointed out the information I’m after is in this book; it will be a costly exercise but it may be my only option now unfortunately. Thanks again for all your hard work on the UCRT, I love it and will keep using it for sure!!

  4. Jerry says:

    Dear Christina,

I just finished proofreading my book, The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge, right before my Internet outage. The publisher (wisely!) decided to bring it back into print and informed me earlier this year. Back when I created this resource in the 1980s (it was published in 1992) I was using an Apple 2+ computer with CPM/Wordstar using 5 1/4 inch floppy disks (lots of them!). There were no spell-checkers back then. The computer screen was a green cathode ray tube. So proofreading what I had typed was a difficult proposition. I usually printed out a chapter and worked from the paper printout. The whole project occupied about two dozen large loose leaf binders.

With modern computers the publishers discovered omissions and discrepancies in my Figure of Speech Index and asked me to see if I could correct and update the problems they found. I had found hundreds of errors on my own since 1992 while using the printed New Treasury. So, I have fixed all those too.

The new edition is projected to be published as a printed book in 2023. I hope they are not hindered by what I’ve read online about paper shortages and supply line problems.

The second-hand copies of The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge sell for more than the new copies were originally priced. If you can find a second or third printing that would be better for the publisher entered some of the corrections I submitted back then for the new printings. You can tell which edition is being sold by the design of the book jacket, if it comes with one. The first printing has a light blue dust cover and a dark blue binding. The second or third printing has a reddish brown dust cover and a dull red or brownish binding, as I recall. I’m not very skilled at describing colors but if you see a picture of what you are buying my description might help a little.

  5. Christina Gilbert says:

Thank you Jerry, appreciate your reply and update on the new edition tentatively scheduled for 2023. I may wait until then to purchase rather than spend the money on the old 2nd hand version from the USA. In the meantime, not sure if you are in a position to do this, but any chance of sending me the 25 pages (approx.) of the TOPIC NUMBER INDEX as a separate PDF, I’d appreciate it very much if possible, thank you again regardless.

  6. Jerry says:

    Dear Christina,

I will see if I still have the Topic Number Index as a separate file. Would you be able to read it as a Microsoft “doc” file? I think all my files are Word files as to format.

  7. Christina Gilbert says:

    Good Morning Jerry,

Thank you sooooo much for sending the doc file to me. I sure can read it and now I’m setting up the headings in my Bible study Trello board for easy access and reference and then using split screen with e-Sword in my iPadPro to study. The Topic Number Index truly is a gold mine. I can’t wait for your new printed edition due next year. I love to study with paper and electronic tools, so it will be a win win for me. GOD bless you Jerry and thank you again!!
