Daily Bible Nugget #48, Philippians 4:19

The Nugget:

Philippians 4:19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

My Comment:

I believe the words of this verse may be taken in our day as a prayer promise. We need to couple them with other aspects of prayer taught in Scripture. For example, James tells us that “…yet ye have not because ye ask not” (James 4:2). In context, Philippians 4:19 is Paul’s affirmation to the Philippians, who had been generous in their support of Paul’s material needs, that God in turn would supply their needs too.

Daily Bible Nugget #47, Philippians 4:13

The Nugget:

Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

My Comment:

The life of Paul, considered alone, is sufficient to fully prove the validity and truth of Christianity. Paul surely knew what it meant to trust in Christ. He knew he could do all things through Christ. Paul wrote 13 books of the New Testament, 14 if you count Hebrews. Paul’s conversion was a most remarkable event in the history of Christianity. Yet I have read and heard some Christians demeaning Paul. Some are of the “Hebrew Roots Movement.” Now, it is fine to study the Hebrew roots of Christianity and the Bible. But some in the Hebrew Roots Movement are a name cult, a false cult. Stay away from them. At a Bible study they tried to prove to me that Paul or Saul was a heretical rabbi. Paul, they said, was a liar, because he could not keep his own conversion story straight. As to this last claim, I said differences in what was said of his conversion story hardly constitute contradictions or falsehood. He just told some things in one instance of telling of his conversion, and mentioned other details at another time. My wife pretty well stopped them in their tracks when she read to them Acts 9:15, “But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel. [16] For I will shew him how great things he must suffer for my name’s sake.” Very clearly, God himself (or the Lord Jesus Christ) chose Paul and appointed him to the ministry. Remember, when Paul wrote the book of Philippians, he was in jail!

Daily Bible Nugget #46, Philippians 4:6

The Nugget:

Philippians 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

My Comment:

Some people get life backwards. They operate on the principle of “Why pray, when I can worry?” whereas it ought to be “Why worry, when I can pray?” God invites us to share our requests with him. That makes for a very good principle of prayer. The following verses are favorites of mine too, and were given as part of the task for Scripture memory, the reference being Philippians 4:6-9. But those are such rich texts for meditation it would not be possible to comment within the brevity of a “Bible Nugget” and do them justice, so I’ll save them, Lord willing, for future posts. But you might enjoy reading them now just the same:

Php 4:7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Php 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
Php 4:9 Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.

Daily Bible Nugget #45, 1 Thessalonians 5:17

The Nugget:

1 Thessalonians 5:17 Pray without ceasing.

My Comment:

Of this list of memory verses I have been posting, this ought to be the easiest one for you to memorize! As short as it is, it is a command, though a blessed one. This does not mean that you must pray all day and do nothing else. But surely each of us can keep the needs of others as well as our own in prayer throughout the day. Instead of “counting sheep” to fall asleep, pray yourself to sleep each night. And should you wake up during the night, pray some more. Another good subject for our prayers is mentioned in the very next verse: “In every thing give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you” (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Now, get busy and memorize 1 Thessalonians 5:17, both the words and its “address” (book, chapter, and verse number). Follow its advice. It will spiritually enrich your life and the lives of those you pray for.

Daily Bible Nugget #44, 1 John 5:14-15

The Nugget:

1 John 5:14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:
1 John 5:15 And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.

My Comment:

If you want to be sure to get answers to your prayers, follow the instruction that John has provided in this passage. This is another good passage to memorize. It is also a wonderful prayer promise.

Daily Bible Nugget #43, 1 John 3:22-23

The Nugget:

1 John 3:22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.
1 John 3:23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.

My Comment:

This passage furnishes us the reason some prayers are answered and some are not. If we keep his commandments and do those things that are pleasing in his sight, John states we will receive of Him whatsoever we ask.

Now what are the commandments John is referring to? Many will rush in to suggest he refers to the Ten Commandments. Others, equally fervently, might wish to insist John is focusing on the Fourth Commandment, for that is the one that has allegedly been changed or dropped out of the list, but needs to be restored to favor again. But these are not the commandments John is directing our attention to. In fact, he spells out very specifically just what commandments he has in mind.

Notice John speaks of commandments. The use of the plural here should alert us to watch for at least two. John specifies two: (1) love one another, and (2) believe on His Son, Jesus Christ. But notice he states these in the reverse order to that I just listed. The first commandment John specifies is, Believe on the name of His son, Jesus Christ. One must believe on Jesus Christ to meet the conditions for answered prayer that John specifies in this passage. To find out more about how to do that, read the New Testament book, the Gospel of John. I plan, Lord willing, to share verses about believing on Christ and the plan of salvation after I’ve covered the verses about prayer.

The Bible versus Obama–Proverbs 29:12

The Text:

Proverbs 29:12 If a ruler hearken to lies, all his servants are wicked.

My Comment:

Maybe I should call this “My Rant.” President Obama not only listens to lies, he constantly tells lies.

He has the same “disease” that some administrators I’ve encountered suffered from.

He originally ran on the promise that under his presidency, government would be marked by transparency. That was a lie. And is still a lie.

As for Obamacare, President Obama made the claim that individual health care costs and premiums would be reduced. That was a lie. And is still a lie.

I seem to recall President Obama promised greater cooperation across the political divide–he was prepared to negotiate. That was a lie. Right now, it is a very visible blatant lie.

Who closed the World War II Memorial to both the public and World War II veterans? If not President Obama, then it is being done by “his servants.”

The Bible is right. All his servants are wicked.

Who attempted to close down the Amber Alert System? If not President Obama, then it is being done by “his servants.”

The Bible is right. All his servants are wicked.

Who has forbidden Military Chaplains to hold services for our active duty military? If not President Obama, then it is being done by “his servants.”

The Bible is right. All his servants are wicked.

Who has attempted to close down public parks and monuments, even when privately run? If not President Obama, then it is being done by “his servants.”

But remember that where President Obama might wish to go play golf–that is still open.

Who has stopped access to cancer treatment? If not President Obama, then it is being done by “his servants.”

Who during these first days of the “government shutdown” absolutely refuses to negotiate anything? President Obama stated he would not budge. The Democrats in the Senate and Mr. Harry Reid himself refuse to open any negotiations. Who is being Blockheaded? President Obama. Who else are being blockheaded? The Senate Democrats.

Assuredly, the Bible is right. “All his servants are wicked.”

Care to make a Biblical judgment call on the probable eternal destiny of the wicked? Check your Bible at Revelation 21:8 for a starter.

Another verse to check is Psalm 9:17, which reads “The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.”

Now, as for the justice and righteousness of the cause supported for the moment by the Republican House of Representatives:

The Founding Fathers very carefully designed the Federal Government to be a limited government. The House of Representatives was given (and still has) the control of the government purse-strings. It is both the right and the duty of the House of Representatives to be “the people’s house,” and serve as an efficient brake upon runaway spending and runaway government. The people have spoken overwhelmingly to their representatives in the House: they do not want Obamacare.

President Obama claims to be a Constitutional scholar. That is what he taught at the University of Chicago. That does not bode well for the quality of education available at the University of Chicago. President Obama runs rampant over the Constitutional limitations provided for in the Constitution. And why not? No one with moral backbone is available to put a stop to President Obama’s rampage.

But what the Republicans have managed to do for a few days so far–exhibit some moral fortitude and backbone–is the correct thing to do.

Anyone who places blame this time on the Republicans in the House of Representatives for the government shutdown is showing their ignorance, or they are flat-out liars, severely warned against in the Bible. This includes the mainstream media, who have utterly failed in their duty to report the truth, but always provide backing and cover for President Obama, who can do no wrong.

So-called “Obamacare” must be stopped dead in its tracks. Failure to do so will bankrupt this country and cause a severe disruption to our civil society.

President Obama promised that when he became president, he would not sign any bill until the public was given at least five full days to read it first. What happened when he was about to sign the Obamacare bill? He or one of his wicked servants argued something to the effect, “We have to pass it first so we can then read what is in it.”

That makes President Obama a liar. And the Bible says, “All his servants are wicked.”

Daily Bible Nugget #42, James 1:5

The Nugget:

James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

My Comment:

This is a wonderful prayer promise. If we lack wisdom, ask for it! This looks like a promise for guidance, to me. There is much in the Bible that can provide us God’s guidance. That would make a good topical Bible study. God promises to give us wisdom, and that he gives it to all liberally, or generously. He does not scold us for not knowing. But to get God’s offered wisdom, we need to ask of God, and He promises it will be given to us.

Daily Bible Nugget #41, Matthew 17:20

The Nugget:

Matthew 17:20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

My Comment:

Unbelief will stifle God’s work in your life and mine. Remember the man in the Bible who plead “Lord, help my unbelief.” Yet there is a problem. Even when we pray in faith believing, sometimes we do not get the desired answer to our prayer. We need to be very careful not to place all the blame on our supposed lack of faith. Sir Robert Anderson wrote a book on The Silence of God. I have read it through at least twice in the past three years or so. Sir Robert Anderson argues that God does not speak today, nor answer prayers today, in the same manner as He did when Christ was upon this earth. He states that God is mercifully silent now, for His next public announcement will be and bring judgment. That does not mean God no longer answers prayer, but in some cases He does choose to remain silent. Anderson presents a very interesting thesis, and his book begins most dramatically, but he, at least in my estimation, falls short in supplying the Biblical basis for his assertions, chapter and verse. I believe I have furnished the Biblical basis for his thesis in the cross references I’ve assembled for this verse, Matthew 17:20. Anderson points out that even within the New Testament itself we can see a change taking place with regard to the visibly miraculous. When Peter was put in prison as recorded in the early history at the start of the book of Acts, an angel came and got him out by night. Paul, however, at a much later date, spent much time in prison and was not miraculously set free. Early in Paul’s ministry we read of miraculous healings, but near the end of Paul’s life and ministry Paul writes that he left Trophimus at Miletum sick (2 Timothy 4:20). I think I have learned more about Matthew 17:20 now than what I understood when I memorized the verse as a teenager preparing to give a message at the Wednesday evening prayer meeting at Thoburn Methodist Church. Nevertheless, Matthew 17:20 is still well worth memorizing as a significant prayer promise.

Daily Bible Nugget #40

The Nugget:

Luk 11:9 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.

My Comment:

Can you remember when you first encountered this verse from the Bible? I must have been impressed by this verse at an early age. I can still remember thinking about this verse while I stood waiting my turn in the milk line when a student at Marshall Elementary School in Detroit many years ago. Times have changed since then, but the Word of God never changes. This is a good verse to learn by heart. It is also filled with encouraging instruction. It is another wonderful prayer promise.

For those who desire to DIG DEEPER into this subject:

(1) Consult the cross references given in Nelson’s Cross Reference Guide to the Bible on pages 1129-1130 for Luke 11:9.

(2) Consult the cross references given in The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge on page 1151 or in Logos 5 Bible software for Luke 11:9.

(3) Lacking access to those two resources, consult the cross references for this passage as I have developed them as given below:
