Daily Bible Nugget #97 Joshua 1:8

The Nugget:

Joshua 1:8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

My Comment:

I once had a local pastor visit my home. At that time I had just visited his church. He made a remarkable comment I never forgot. He said, “Jerry, you talk too much about the Lord and too much about the Bible.” I continued to attend, though looking back, I should have known better. But this verse, Joshua 1:8, must have “rubbed off” on me. God desires us to talk about His Word in the Bible with one another. If that kind of talk is discouraged, the church involved is not really a Christian church. With its tight-knit cliques, it might barely be a social club. God wants us to meditate on His written Word day and night. But He doesn’t just want us to think and talk about His Word. He wants us to live His written Word by obeying it. He promises good success if we do this. He even promises that our way will be prosperous. That may include something beyond and better than worldly financial success, though it has been demonstrated in history (for example, the Puritan ethic) that those who follow God’s Word carefully are often blessed with material prosperity. Even better, obeying God’s Word brings spiritual prosperity, and that lasts for all eternity.

Daily Bible Nugget #96, Psalm 119:11

The Nugget:

Psalm 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

My Comment:

One way to hide God’s word in our hearts is to memorize it. If we have learned a Bible verse by heart we can recall the exact words and think about or meditate upon what it says. The Psalmist expressed a specific purpose for hiding God’s Word in his heart. He hid God’s word in his heart to keep himself from sinning against God. Now that is a life-changing idea. Recall that all these verses I have posted as “Daily Bible Nuggets” of late are from a much larger collection of verses that I first learned by heart as a new Christian. This specific list is what I shared with my high school Sunday school class. This list is good for anyone, and never goes out of date! Learning then sharing these verses is what I believe is needed to change some of the misguided trends in our culture and set people, young and old, on the right path. There is a power in God’s written Word that goes far beyond what any of us can imagine. This power needs to be unleashed. It is only unleashed when others get to hear or read these truths with interest for themselves. It is like what Paul said about the Gospel–He was not ashamed of the Gospel, for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone who believes it. But there is power in God’s written Word not only to save us, but to grow us, and to keep us from sin. Some people have written in the front of their personal Bibles the little saying, “This Book will keep you from sin, or sin will keep you from this Book.”

Daily Bible Nugget #95, Psalm 119:9

The Nugget:

Psalm 119:9 Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.

My Comment:

There is much practical insight embedded in this verse. As I understand it, God’s Word will clean up the lives of young men (and women too). In fact, God’s Word, if read, studied, and applied will cleanse the life of everyone who follows it. Think of the devastating news heard daily of the crime committed in the inner cities of major metropolitan areas. The high crime rates and danger zones reflect the absence of the Gospel. Yet some of those very areas have hundreds of churches. People in those churches have an ideal mission field right at their doorstep. I’ve met many, many wonderful, gracious students in schools in those inner-city neighborhoods. There were many very bad students as well, many of whom dropped out. Students in my own classes rarely dropped out of school. Some of them came to know Christ as their Savior. Some of them in turn led others their age to Christ. That is the way it is supposed to work. Part of the key to seeing God work in the neighborhood is to reach out to the unsaved and get them interested in the Bible. Almost all of the young people and adults I’ve encountered have questions about the Bible and spiritual things. Give them straightforward answers from the Bible itself and they are good to go. Get them into the Bible itself and teach them how to find the answers to their own questions. Encourage them to learn key Bible memory verses by heart. You really want to see true hope and change? Politicians won’t do it. Educators and education can’t do it. Only the Bible can bring true hope and change and bring God’s cleansing power to the lives of people and to their neighborhoods.

Daily Bible Nugget #94, Jeremiah 15:16

The Nugget:

Jeremiah 15:16 Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts.

My Comment:

The Scriptures were written for our learning, that through them we might have both comfort and hope (see Romans 15:4). Jeremiah had times when he was feeling downhearted. By some he is called the weeping prophet. But when he fed upon the Word of God, God’s word brought him joy and his heart rejoiced. That can be our experience, too, as we take time to read God’s Word found in the Bible. If you want more joy in your life, try doing what Jeremiah did!

Daily Bible Nugget #93, Job 23:12

The Nugget:

Job 23:12 Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.

My Comment:

What is your favorite meal? Years ago I used to enjoy having a mushroom omelet dinner. Sometimes it would come with pancakes and sausage. I wonder what Job’s favorite meal was. He probably ate well. He was one of the richest men of his day.

Yet Job said he was more interested in the words from the mouth of God than in his necessary food. We all need to get closer to that ideal.

The more we read and memorize Scripture, the more we will enjoy it. There have been some very good books written about how to enjoy the Bible, and how to study it.

But the first step to growing spiritually is to regularly read the Bible for ourselves. Some parts of the Bible will be easy to understand. Other parts will take some extra effort, and even then we won’t fully understand it all. We can all surely start or continue our reading and study of the Bible.

The goal is to get to the place where Job was, when in the midst of all his suffering and the criticisms of his well-meaning friends, Job still loved God’s Word and valued it as highly as his daily food.

Daily Bible Nugget #92, 1 Peter 2:2

The Nugget:

1 Peter 2:2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

My Comment:

The last verse (2 Peter 3:18) gave the command to grow in grace. This verse tells how to do it. We are to grow by desiring and partaking of the “milk of the word.” The “word” is the Bible.

Just as newborn babies very strongly desire milk, so we are to very strongly desire to feed on God’s written word. If a newborn baby has no desire for milk or food, we would suspect the baby to be deathly ill.

So for anyone who supposes they are really a Christian. If you have no appetite for God’s Word and Bible study, you are very likely spiritually dead, and not a real Christian! Or, it may be that you have never truly been involved in Real Bible Study.

I remember a young lady, editor of the high school newspaper, visited the Bible Discussion Club, to better prepare herself to write an article about it. She told us all that she had no idea that other students her age could be so interested and excited about the Bible.

I personally have found that what people imagine a Bible study to be like is altogether mistaken. They think a Bible study, as in a home Bible study, is simply another dose of Sunday school. It need not be.

Real Bible study involves open discussion and questions and answers where all are encouraged, though no one is forced, to participate.

Getting back to the “milk of the word,” if you fed your physical body as faithfully as you partake of spiritual food yourself from the Bible, how long would you last or stay well physically? The answer to that question might be indicative of your own spiritual health. Whatever our spiritual health, I’m sure we are all open to improvement in that department.

Take time to read the Bible as often as possible. You might have to start small, reading just five minutes a day. Eventually, hopefully sooner than later, you will build up to twenty minutes a day. The best way to grow your interest in the Bible is to spend time reading it. The more you know the Bible, the more interesting it gets.

(2) Consult the cross references given in The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge on page 1474 or in Logos 5 Bible software for 1 Peter 2:2.

Peter states we should desire the Word of God just like a newborn baby desires milk. I think a fair inference to be drawn from Peter’s statement is that just like a newborn baby would die if it never gets milk, so anyone who does not feed on the written Word of God in the Bible will die spiritually. A further proper inference no doubt would be that anyone who has no desire to seriously feed on the written Word of God in the Bible is spiritually dead. *Jb 23:12. Daily Bible Nugget #91, 2 Peter 3:18

The Nugget:

2 Peter 3:18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

My Comment:

I take this verse as a commandment. We are to (1) grow in grace, and (2) grow in our knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Now, how do we best do that? To my mind, we should (1) read and study the Bible, particularly the New Testament, faithfully; (2) pray without ceasing; (3) have fellowship with other believers who are committed to growing spiritually and encouraging one another. For some, finding other believers who truly believe in the Bible and are committed to Bible study and spiritual growth may be very difficult. You can experience spiritual growth even without Christian fellowship if you will (1) study the Bible; (2) pray; (3) share your faith with others who have not yet found Christ. Just prior to this verse, Peter cautions us to not fall from our own stedfastness by being led astray with the error of the wicked. Those who are led astray by false teachers might have remained faithful to the Scripture and its teachings had they grown in grace and their knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Daily Bible Nugget #90, 1 Corinthians 10:13

The Nugget:

1Co 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

My Comment:

Here is a Bible promise to encourage and assure you. The promise is anchored in the faithfulness of God. God promises that for every temptation He will make a way of escape so that you are able to bear it. Temptation may be a reference to God’s testing of us to prove our faith. God does not tempt us to evil. James tells us in his little book that “God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man” (James 1:13). James further tells us “every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed” (James 1:14). James concludes with the statement, “Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death” (James 1:15).

Daily Bible Nugget #89, 2 Corinthians 5:17

The Nugget:

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

My Comment:

The key to have the new life in Christ is to actually be in Christ. This is something that cannot be earned or worked for. We are placed in Christ when we believe on Him for salvation. This is the work of the Holy Spirit. If it has happened to you, you will know it. Old things are passed away. Our whole outlook on life is changed. That change will produce the fruit of the Spirit in our life. All things will become new. That does not always mean that all our problems are solved and that we never experience trouble or disappointment anymore. But this newness of life that God enables us to walk in lets us keep close touch with God. It lets us have fellowship with our Lord Jesus Christ. There is a Gospel song you may have sung in Sunday school that in part captures the idea, “Every day with Jesus is sweeter than the day before.”

Daily Bible Nugget #88, 2 Corinthians 5:15

The Nugget:

2Co 5:15 And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.

My Comment:

This verse is the first on my list of Bible memory verses about Christian growth and living. The truth of this verse ought to move us all to live for the Lord Jesus Christ, considering the sacrifice He gave for us. That does not mean that every person who believes in Christ must become a so-called full-time Christian worker. We should all be full-time Christians, ready to do the bidding of the Holy Spirit as He directs us through the ministry of the written Word of God found in the Bible. We do not all need to become pastors or preachers. God will use each of us where we are, where He has allowed us to be placed. Many times the word of very ordinary Christians will have a more memorable impact on someone than the word of a “preacher.” As they see it, preachers are paid to talk about these things. Ordinary Christians are not, so when ordinary believers share their faith it sometimes has great impact for God. I suspect He is very eager, though very patient, looking to use us in His plan to help others in their spiritual walk, or help others to come to a saving knowledge of Christ. As soon as He sees we are ready, and maybe even before we think we are ready, He will provide the opportunity for us to be of help spiritually to someone else.

If you have been reading here, you really do not have an excuse any more. You cannot say you do not know enough about the Bible to share your faith with someone else who is unsaved. I posted quite a number of Bible memory verses that convey God’s plan of salvation right from Scripture. What I seem to recall that I did at one time was to take a pocket New Testament, or a small Bible, and mark the verses for the plan of salvation in the margin. I started with Romans 3:23, “for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God,” and wrote the next verse to consider in the margin. But once you have committed the list of verses to memory, it is possible to share the verses with a person in a manner that is appropriate to their need and life context, rather than a one-size fits all approach that uses the same procedure with every person. If you notice as you read the Gospel accounts, Jesus seems never to have used the same procedure twice. Each person was different, and the way He approached each person was unique.
