Daily Bible Nugget #696, 1 Corinthians 10:12

The Nugget:

1Co 10:12  Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall. (KJV)

1Co 10:12 So the man who thinks he stands securely must be on the lookout not to fall. (Williams NT)

1Co 10:12  So, people who think they are standing firmly should be careful that they don’t fall. (GW, God’s Word translation)

1Co 10:12 So let him who seems to himself to be safe go in fear of a fall. (BBE, Bible in Basic English)

1Co 10:12 Even if you think you can stand up to temptation, be careful not to fall. (CEV, Contemporary English Translation)

My Comment:

Jesus warned us quite plainly, as recorded in Matthew 7,

Mat 7:21  Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Mat 7:22  Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
Mat 7:23  And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Earlier in the same chapter of the Sermon on the Mount Jesus said:

Mat 7:13  Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
Mat 7:14  Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. (KJV)

Mat 7:13 Go in through the narrow gate. The gate to destruction is wide, and the road that leads there is easy to follow. A lot of people go through that gate.
Mat 7:14 But the gate to life is very narrow. The road that leads there is so hard to follow that only a few people find it. (CEV)

Note how Jesus cautions that “few there be that find it”–that is, that find the road to eternal life with Him.

Those that are merely “Sunday-go-to-meeting Christians” as the spiritual says it may not end up where they think they will. This is a serious call to a carefully conducted life that truly reflects a genuine personal committed relationship to our Lord Jesus Christ and His Word as found in the Bible.

We cannot afford to short-change ourselves for all eternity by failing to fully live for our Lord Jesus Christ. We all need to get serious and stay serious for all our lives about reading and studying and obeying God’s Word as found in the Bible!

DIGGING DEEPER

Below is a cross-reference Bible study for 1 Corinthians 10:12. I have reproduced the cross references from three different resources. I assume that these resources increase in depth and sometimes difficulty, though the intention of providing more references is to achieve greater clarity in presenting what the Bible says elsewhere on these themes.
