Daily Bible Nugget #68, John 14:6

The Nugget:

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

This verse is an important verse to memorize as part of the list of verses I have been giving that pertain to the plan of salvation. Jesus Himself said He is the way, and no man can come to the Father except through Him. We cannot get to God through our baptism, our church, or our good works. We can only come to the Father through Jesus. That is why it is important to read the Bible for ourselves, particularly the New Testament to start with, so we can get better acquainted with our Lord Jesus Christ. That is also why it is important to be able to share the Gospel message with others. Learning a set of Bible memory verses will equip you to share the Gospel with others, even when you may not have immediate access to your Bible. Many people today have a vague acquaintance with the Gospel, but they have not heard the truth of the Gospel explained to them in a way they can understand it to know how to respond. The job of sharing the Gospel is not just the job of your pastor, it is the job of every true Christian.

By Hendiatris, three words are used, but one thing is meant. Two of the words are exalted to the place of emphatic adjectives, which are thus raised to equal importance with the subject itself. Here, the sense is “I am the true and living way.” Of course, Christ is the “truth” as He is also the “life,” but this is not what is stated in this verse. Here, only one subject is in question: “the way”; and the other two nouns are used to define its true nature and character (F/S 673). Compare the related figure, Hendiadys (FS93A, Ge +1:26), which differs from this figure only in having two, not three, words used when only one thing is meant. Jn **10:9. 15:3. Ge 3:24. Daily Bible Nugget #67, John 10:1

The Nugget:

John 10:1 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.

My Comment:

It may have once been true that all roads lead to Rome, at least in the time of the Roman roads. But not all roads (nor all religions!) lead to heaven! Jesus said He is the door. Therefore, he that does not enter by that door, but climbs up some other way, Jesus said is a thief and a robber. We don’t look too kindly upon a thief or robber, especially when we are the victim. When it comes to receiving eternal life, the only way God has authorized us to receive His gift is through His Son. And as for those who claim that God does not have a Son–guess what, they are prime examples in our day of the thief and robber Jesus talked about. But there are other thieves and robbers out there. They include those who deny the Trinity, those who deny the Deity of Christ, those who deny the Divine inspiration of the Bible, and those who add any other authoritative source of spiritual knowledge, such as Tradition, additional revelations by supposedly inspired prophets or prophetesses, or other supposedly inspired books, and the like. The full truth about God and salvation are to be found only in one place–right between the covers of your Bible. Anyone pointing you to anywhere else is climbing up some other way.

Daily Bible Nugget #66 Acts 4:12

The Nugget:

Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

My Comment:

Salvation is only through belief in Jesus Christ. Peter stated this most clearly in this verse. It couldn’t be any plainer than this. God Himself authenticated the ministry and message of Jesus Christ by raising Jesus from the dead on the third day. No other faith can boast of a historically documented stupendous miracle like this, the bodily resurrection of Christ. In context, a lame man had just been healed. The religious authorities of that day were highly displeased, because the miracle of healing was done in public. No one could deny it took place. The authorities asked Peter and the disciples, “By what power, or by what name, have ye done this?” Peter answered, “By the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand before you whole.” No church, no religious denomination, no religious organization can save us. Salvation is only through faith in Jesus Christ.

Daily Bible Nugget #65, John 3:3

The Nugget:

John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

My Comment:

No one can enter heaven or see the kingdom of God without first being born again. The expression “born again” may also be expressed “born from above.” Many people believe they are “born again” because they have been baptized in or with water. This could not be true in this context, for Jesus was not schooling Nicodemus, a leading Pharisee and teacher of the Jews, about ritual water baptism. Jesus was surprised that Nicodemus was not aware of this teaching from his knowledge of the Bible. Jesus had reference to the prophecy of Ezekiel (Ezekiel 36:25-27). Ezekiel makes it clear that being born again is the work of the Holy Spirit, and so does Jesus in the immediate context of John 3:5. The Holy Spirit produces the work of the new birth in us when we believe in Christ for salvation. When this work of grace wrought in us by the Holy Spirit takes place, He produces the fruit of the Spirit in us as a result of the regenerative change or transformation that takes place in us. Jesus said we must be born again. It is not optional.

Daily Bible Nugget #64, Galatians 2:16

The Nugget:

Galatians 2:16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

My Comment:

Once again, the Bible clearly tells us that we cannot get to God by the works of the law–by keeping the Ten Commandments, or any other rules. We are saved by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. You will have noticed that in this listing of memory verses for the plan of salvation as it is given in the Bible that this issue of commandment keeping has been brought forward several times. When showing someone just what it is that the Bible teaches about an issue, it is helpful to show the truth as it appears in several places in the Bible. That should help to get the point across. Anyone who will take the effort to memorize the verses I have been sharing will be equipped to share faith in Christ with someone else, should the opportunity arise.

Ro *3:20. be justified. or, made righteous. Gr. dikaioō (S#1344g, Ro 8:30). Made righteous is from dikaioō and commonly translated as “justified.” The issue here is between Law and grace, between the blood of the Levitical animal and the blood of the Son of God, and between the effect of each: to justify or to make righteous. There is necessarily contextual and dispensational diversity in meaning with respect to these terms. Accordingly, the meaning of dikaioō cannot be to justify under both Law and grace. Under Law dikaioō means to justify (cf. Ro 2:13), but under grace it means to make righteous (cf. Ro 3:24; T 3:7); further, these meanings accord with the respective systems as to ability to put away sin. Under the Law the blood of Levitical animals could not take away sins (cf. He 10:4, 11). But the blood of Christ, under the better covenant, does what the Law could never do—takes away sin. Regenerative change of the inner man was not possible under Law; in Christ there is a power by which sinners may be made righteous! (cf. Ro 2:13; 3:20 and notes) [Lavender NT, ftn f]. Ga **3:11. Daily Bible Nugget #63, Romans 3:20

The Nugget:

Romans 3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

My Comment:

If you want to see a contradiction in the Bible, here is one. Romans 3:20 states that by the deeds of the law shall no flesh be justified. But if we look back to Romans 2:13 we read that “the doers of the law shall be justified.” I suspect that modern English translations of the Bible generally have not cleared up this seeming contradiction. That is the reason there is such a need for a new translation that carefully follows the Greek text, is translated with awareness of dispensational distinctions, that does not suppress the grammatical distinctions so unique to the Greek language and crucial for proper understanding of what the authors meant when the words of the New Testament were penned. No currently available English translation does all that. Young’s Literal Translation comes the closest, but like the rest of our English translations, it falls short of presenting the salvation vocabulary given in the Greek text. All past and current English translations fail at this crucial point. But as a salvation memory verse, Romans 3:20 does make it clear that no one can be saved by keeping the law, including obeying the Ten Commandments. If we cannot get to heaven by being good, what must we do to get to heaven and have eternal life? The answer, in brief, is that we must believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. But this language may well be almost meaningless to those immersed in contemporary culture. Probably the best way to overcome this gap in understanding is to become immersed in the Gospel of John, which was written to enable anyone to have eternal life by believing what it teaches. John asserts that he wrote his Gospel so that people would believe on the name of the Son of God, and that believing they would have eternal life. Even that language is obscure to the modern unchurched individual, but by reading the context of the Gospel of John, the meaning will become plain.

Daily Bible Nugget #62, Ephesians 2:8-10

The Nugget:

Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Ephesians 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

My Comment:

This verse clarifies just what place works have in salvation: none. But it does not stop there. Once we are saved through faith, we are His workmanship. He creates us in Christ Jesus “unto good works.” He has ordained that once we are saved through faith, good works will be a pattern for our life, and of our life. As a practical matter, the way this works out in practice or experience is that a saved person will bear the fruit of the spirit through the work of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22, 23). It is not something we manufacture for ourselves. These are important principles to understand from the Bible, God’s Word. As noted before, these principles contradict normal human intuition, as well as the teaching of many churches.

Daily Bible Nugget #61, 2 Timothy 1:9

The Nugget

2Ti 1:9 Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,

My Comment:

As a verse about the plan of salvation, this passage tells us plainly that we are not saved according to our works. That is a most important concept, because most people have mistaken ideas about this, sometimes even taught by their teachers at church! If you get this point wrong (as most certainly the Council of Trent did years ago), you will be in for a very unpleasant surprise come eternity. God saves us according to his own purpose and grace as given to us in Christ Jesus. There is much to “unpack” in this short verse. The best way to learn more is to follow the cross references as given in the “dig deeper” section immediately below.

Daily Bible Nugget #60, Titus 3:5

The Nugget:

Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

My Comment:

The basic ideas in this verse are probably quite clear to every reader. The finer details of the last portion of the verse are very instructive and less known to general readers of the Bible. As one of my memory verse texts for the plan of salvation, I concentrated on the first portion of the verse. Paul affirms that we are not saved by our works. God saved us according to His mercy. None of us could ever be good enough to merit salvation. By washing of regeneration Paul is speaking of the regenerative or transforming change brought about in our life when we believe on Christ. That regeneration is wrought in us by the “renewing of the Holy Ghost.” A truly saved person has a transformed character that through the work of the Holy Spirit produces the fruit of the Spirit described by Paul in Galatians 5:22-23.

Sōzō is a radical deliverance from something. Here it is deliverance by a washing, by means of rebirth and renewal, all described as the work of the Holy Spirit. He delivers us refers to full salvation. Note that salvation is viewed in Scripture as initial (Ac 16:31), completely-entirely (1 Th 5:23), progressive (Jn 3:16), and ultimate (1 C 15:53, 54) [Lavender NT, fn m]. Ps 119:146. Is 33:22. Washing by means of rebirth: This phrase describes by what means he delivers us. Washing is a picture of the cleansing work of the Holy Spirit, and has nothing to do with ritual, ceremony, or baptism by water (Ro 6:3n). This washing is real, transformational, and life-giving. It is the work of the Holy Spirit described as regenerative, not simply birth but a re-birth (Jn 3:3-6), or restoration to the former state—the image of God (Ge 1:26, 27; *5:3; Ep 4:24; Col 3:9, 10), further described as predestinated to similarities of the image of His Son (Ro 8:29) [Lavender NT, fn n). Gr. anakainōsis (S#342g, only here and Ro 12:2, the verb in Col 3:10), renovation (Strong). Renewal by the Holy Spirit: The work of the Holy Spirit is emphatically emphasized. Renewal translates anakainōseōs, essentially stating the washing by means of rebirth idea in another way. Further, anakainōseōs is another mighty declaration: compounded of ana = back, again + kainōsis = renewal: renew, complete change, i.e., it is a present transformation in which the renewed believer passes over into that former state of holiness before the Fall! What a mighty work of the Holy Spirit. Kainōsis means renew all by itself, the preposition ana added, making anakainōseōs emphatically state the transformation or the passage to the former state of holiness. Adding the preposition ana helps the noun kainōsis affirm more vividly and emphatically the newness or renewal to the former state (Lavender NT, fn o). Ps +*51:10. 104:30. Is 43:7. Jn 1:13. Ac 2:17. Daily Bible Nugget #59, James 2:10

The Nugget:

James 2:10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

My Comment

Jesus responded to a man who asked what he must do to inherit eternal life that surely he knew the Commandments, referring to the Ten Commandments. Jesus then named some of them. Of course you know that when Jesus listed the Ten Commandments He never includes the Fourth Commandment about keeping the Sabbath Day holy. Yet we know that even the Old Testament teaches no one has kept the Ten Commandments. This fact is reflected in Proverbs 20:9 and Ecclesiastes 7:20, two of the Bible Nugget passages I’ve already given pertaining to the plan of salvation. Yet in Leviticus 18:5 God states that if a person keeps the law, he will live. Therefore, that is an option or one way to receive everlasting life or salvation, if a person could do it. Jesus did it. But no one else has done so. The problem with that means of receiving eternal life is that it is unachievable. James tells us that if we keep all the commandments, but violate just one, we are guilty of all. So for any who may think that because they keep the Ten Commandments as best they can that this will qualify them for heaven and eternal life, clearly this is a very mistaken opinion–though that is what many people believe if you ask them. Rather than keeping the Ten Commandments to deserve eternal life, we are taught by both the Old Testament (Genesis 15:6) and the New Testament (Romans 10:13) that it is faith in the promise of God, not what we do for God, that brings eternal life.

While the Jews taught that “he who transgresses all the precepts of the law has broken the yoke, dissolved the covenant, and exposed the law to contempt; and so has he done who has only broken one precept;” they also taught, “that he who observed any principal command was equal to him who kept the whole law,” and gave for an example the forsaking of idolatry.
