Daily Bible Nugget #741, Hebrews 3:13

The Nugget:

Hebrews 3:13  But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

My Comment:

This is “How to Make Disciples Part 4.” “How to Make Disciples Part 3” is posted as Daily Bible Nugget #738, 1 Thessalonians 3:5.

The present decline in church affiliation can be reversed by following the principles of “How to Make Disciples” (Matthew 28:20) taught in the Bible. The problem is that very few Christians are reading and diligently studying the Bible for themselves. Genuinely saved Christians have an insatiable hunger for God’s Word. They are eager to read and study it every chance they get.

We are to desire the “sincere milk of the word” (1 Peter 2:2) with the same intensity as a newborn baby desires its milk. If you do not possess this hunger, consider that you might be spiritually dead! The way to develop and strengthen your interest in and hunger for God’s Word is to get to know more about it. The way to do that is to start by reading from the New Testament every day (Joshua 1:8. Psalm 1:2. Acts 17:11). The more you know about a subject, the stronger your interest will become.

When it comes to making and keeping disciples, the Bible teaches that this, too, is a daily task.

We read in the immediately preceding context of Hebrews 3:13,

Hebrews 3:12  Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.

This is a major concern today that MUST be addressed by every genuine Bible-believing, Bible practicing Christian. I have encountered many former Christians who have become atheists. This need not happen and would not happen if fellow Christian believers and pastors and Sunday school teachers and youth leaders would faithfully obey the commands given in Hebrews 3:12, 13.

Study this important subject by reading the notes and cross references given in The Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury or The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge as given below from the UCRT:

Hebrews 3:13

one another. Our duty towards one another in watching over one another’s spiritual lives (Heb 13:7; Heb 13:17) merits careful study in this context. Prompt action based upon the signs of spiritual decline given in Heb 3:12 is essential. Scripture furnishes much material which should form the basis of exhortation. We should encourage one another in

Daily Bible Nugget #740, Matthew 1:21

4-21-23 Daily Bible Nugget 740 Matthew 1v21

The Nugget:

Mat 1:21  And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

The Muslim Question/Challenge:

The biggest blunder is that Christians does not know the name of the god inside Jesus. So are they worshipping the human Jesus.

Christian God Without Name

A god stayed inside the womb of mary imprisoned for 9 long months sleeping and eating what she gave him, doing nothing the whole time.

Yet none of the Christian know the name of the god who stayed inside the womb?

Can any learned Christian tell the name of that god?

My Response:

To make claims like this shows you have not studied the Bible very carefully!

One very good way to actually study the Bible is to make use of a source of cross references.

Since the Bible does not present all of its teaching about a subject at one place, to learn the full truth we must compare Scripture with Scripture.

To begin a study of what the Bible teaches about this subject, a good place to start such a study is Matthew 1:21.

Here is a rather full and complete collection of cross references for Matthew 1:21. After you have fully read and studied the Bible passages and notes I share below, feel free to ask more about it. If you do not make the effort to carefully study what I have provided you in answer to your question, you are not seriously interested in getting a true and careful answer:

Daily Bible Nugget #739, Revelation 1:11

4-17-23 Daily Bible Nugget 739 Revelation 1v11

The Nugget:

Rev 1:11  Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea.

My Comment:

I have posted the following discussion here to demonstrate how CROSS REFERENCES are a great aid to Real Bible Study when answering Muslim challenges to the Bible and Christian faith. Please read to learn about the power of cross-reference Bible study!

The Muslim Claim:

Revelation 22:9 And he said to me, See (that thou do it) not. I am thy fellow-servant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them who keep the words of this book. Worship Aloha.

The angel didnt say ‘worship Jesus’.

Those who worship Jesus will stay in hell forever

Quran 5:72

They have certainly disbelieved who say, “Allah is the Messiah, the son of Mary” while the Messiah has said, “O Children of Israel, worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord.” Indeed, he who associates others with Allah – Allah has forbidden them paradise, and his refuge is the Fire. And there are not for the wrongdoers any helpers.

Response by HK:

You should have read further down and see that the God who is being worshipped and giving the commandments is Jesus. Read the whole chapter. Revelation 22:10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16.

TK replied:

show me one, just ONE place where Jesus tells you he is ALOAH or where any angel say Jesus/Messiah is ALOAH

Jesus is NOT the first and last since he DIED

He had a beginning (in his mother’s womb) and had an ending (he was crucified and DIED). Automatically this verse is FALSE and Jesus is disqualified.

HK replied:

Now you’re disputing the words of Jesus himself. Who are you?

Jesus body died but his Spirit remains alive forever. It’s NOT his Spirit that died. Jesus is a Spirit.

Jesus is the first and last (Alpha and Omega). The same title God used in Isaiah 44.6! Revelation 1:17-18.

TK replied:

//Now you’re disputing the words of Jesus himself.//

You can post millions of ‘alpha omega’ ‘first and last’ verses.. but they’re irrelevant if in reality Jesus had a beginning and ending. He’s created in Mary’s womb. And he died on a tree.

Hindu ‘god’ claimed to be Alpha Omega in Hindu scripture (Bhagavad Gita)

BG 10.20: O Arjun, I am seated in the heart of all living entities. I am the beginning, middle, and end of all beings.

Alpha Omega in Quran

“He is the First and the Last, the Manifest and the Hidden, and He is the Knower of all things.” (Quran 57:3)

Jesus didn’t say he’s the alpha omega. However he did use “first” and “last” in a sentence:

Holy Quran 5:114

——————

Said Jesus, the son of Mary, “O Allah, our Lord, send down to us a table [spread with food] from the heaven to be for us a festival for the first of us and the last of us and a sign from You. And provide for us, and You are the best of providers.”

HK replied:

<<“He is the First and the Last, the Manifest and the Hidden, and He is the Knower of all things.” (Quran 57:3)>>

So you agree Jesus is described in the Bible like Allah in your Qu’ran. First and last.

<<<Jesus didn’t say he’s the alpha omega. However he did use “first” and “last” in a sentence:>>>

False. Who was saying these words. Answer is given on the same passage.

Revelation 1:11, 12, 13.

TK replied:

“Virtually all modern translations do not include in Rev 1:11 the following words that are in the KJV version of that verse:

Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and,”

BIBLE CORRUPTION

HK replied:

The point is that Jesus is the first and the last. Same title God used to describe himself on Isaiah 44.6. And it is the same title your Allah used in Quran 57.3.

TK replied:

isaiah quoted the REAL GOD, not a fake human deity

HK replied:

// isaiah quoted the REAL GOD, not a fake human deity //

Jesus is the REAL GOD. Not some fake god who couldn’t help his prophet when he needed help most, like losing his children.

VM commented to TK:

Your comment “He had a beginning (in his mother’s womb) and had an ending (he was crucified and DIED)” refers.

Thanks for acknowledging that he was crucified and died.

My response to TK:

You totally miss the point that at Revelation 1:11, Jesus claims to be the “Alpha and Omega.” This means that our Lord Jesus Christ made a direct claim to be God. Jesus did not claim to be God the Father.

The fact that this text is unique to the King James Version of the English Bible and is not represented in the original Greek text does not diminish the truth of this claim by Jesus because it is restated in other places both in the book of Revelation and elsewhere in the Bible. These places can readily be identified by anyone who will make the effort to consult a source of more complete CROSS REFERENCES such as those I supply in my book The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge and which I supply in my yet more complete digital resource, The Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury (available from www.e-Sword.net as a premium downloadable Bible commentary):

I am. See on Rev 1:8; Rev 1:17, Rev 21:6; Rev 22:13, Deut 32:39, Isa 41:4; Isa 43:11; Isa 48:12, Zec 13:7, Joh 8:58, Heb 13:8.
Alpha and Omega. Rev 21:6; Rev 22:13.

the last. Isa 44:6; Isa 48:12, Heb 1:11; Heb 12:2; Heb 13:8.

TK replied to me:

study Islam. It’s not complicated. You don’t have to cross reference here and there just to support a concept. Many people in the west have studied Islam and accepted Islam as the truth. You should too.

My reply to TK:

You state in your comment to me:

“study Islam. It’s not complicated. You don’t have to cross reference here and there just to support a concept. Many people in the west have studied Islam and accepted Islam as the truth. You should too.”

In my studies of Islam so far, I have found its claims, practices, and history to be incompatible with the truth already contained in the New Testament and the Bible as a whole.

Cross reference Bible study is the best way to study the Bible, especially when you have access to a more complete collection of references.

Cross references make it much easier to obey the directive of Jesus to “search the Scriptures” (John 5:39).

Cross references are more effective than a Bible concordance because they connect not just the same words but related ideas expressed in different words, something a concordance alone cannot do.

Those who study the Bible using cross references will strengthen their faith and get a far better understanding of what the Bible actually teaches. They will be firmly grounded in their faith and will know how to discern truth from error. They will not turn aside to follow those who teach lies and falsehood.

My further reply to TK:

And I posted evidence regarding your false claim that Jesus never said what is stated in Revelation 1:11, “I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last” by sharing with you the CROSS REFERENCES for that statement that prove Jesus DID state this truth elsewhere in the book of Revelation, starting with Revelation 1:8,

Rev 1:8 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.

Revelation 1:17
17 And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last:
King James Version

Rev 1:18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.

Revelation 21:6
6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.
King James Version

Revelation 22:12, 13
Rev 22:12 And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.
13 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.
King James Version

TK posed the question to me:

When Jesus was alive with his disciples, did he ever declare he’s the first and the last?

My answer to TK:

You ask:

“when Jesus was alive with his disciples, did he ever declare he’s the first and the last?”

John was on earth in the Isle of Patmos when he heard Jesus behind him speaking with a great voice (Revelation 1:10). Jesus directly commanded John to “write in a book” what he saw, and John did so. That is how we came to have the book of Revelation. Jesus was certainly alive and on earth when he spoke these things to John.

I notice you have asked elsewhere in this thread:

“how do you reconcile the contradiction? how can the dead be the ever living? how can the one born be from eternal past?”

The answer is found in the Bible. The answer is given in Revelation 1:5,

Rev 1:5  And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,

Jesus explained that He is the “first begotten of the dead.”

Carefully studying the CROSS REFERENCES given for this verse, we learn that this is a reference to the fact that our Lord Jesus Christ is the first to be resurrected bodily from the dead:

Acts 26:23
23  That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles.
King James Version

Romans 1:4
4  And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:
King James Version

1 Corinthians 15:20-23
20  But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.
21  For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.
22  For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
23  But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ’s at his coming.
King James Version

I have shared just a few of the cross referenced Bible passages which shed light upon or explain the meaning intended by “first begotten of the dead.”

How can one who died be living? God raised Jesus bodily from the dead.

How can the one born be from the eternal past?

Again, the Bible gives a clear answer:

Mic 5:2  But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.

Daily Bible Nugget #738, 1 Thessalonians 3:5

The Nugget:

1 Thessalonians 3:5  For this cause, when I could no longer forbear, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter have tempted you, and our labour be in vain.

My Comment:

There is much to learn from this statement in Scripture. Unfortunately, few Christians in churches, and probably few Bible readers in general, have the stomach or fortitude to fully take in what this verse means. And this results in great loss to the church and a less-effective outreach for the good news of the Gospel. To more fully study this verse, consult the notes and cross references given in The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge.

This is the third reference passage on the subject of how to make disciples. The first passage was Jonah 4:11. The second passage was Exodus 18:21.

From The Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury:

have tempted you. The Aorist or point tense indicates that the Apostle feared not merely an assault on their faith, but a successful assault: “that the tempter had succeeded in tempting you” (see Hogg & Vine, p. 95). +**1Co 6:9; +**1Co 6:10, 2Co 11:28, 29.

and our labour. Paul consistently sought to conserve his gains and minimize losses through careful follow-up of his converts (Act 15:36; Act 20:20, 31, 32, Compare +*Heb 3:12; +*Heb 3:13).

In our day more attention needs to be paid to spiritual growth following initial conversion. So much attention has been focused upon the “birth” that little has been done to insure growth of new believers.

As a result, as many are lost silently out the “back door” as are currently being won and brought in through the front door. Warmly receive (+**Rom 15:7) newcomers, then introduce them to the fellowship of strong believers who will exercise continuing love and hospitality toward them (+*Rom 12:13, *1Pe 4:9; *1Pe 4:10) to facilitate the development of deep Christian relationships (+*Rom 12:5).

Rather than be so efficient in dropping inactive members from the church roll, we ought to be careful to exercise our responsibility in caring for (+*1Ti 3:5) and feeding the sheep, seeking out the ones who have left the fold, winning them back to active life in the body of Christ, rather than abandoning them to the world, the flesh, or the devil. See related notes (Jon 4:11 note. Heb 3:13 note. Heb 6:9 note). See on 1Th 2:1; 1Th 2:11, 12, 13; 1Th 2:19, 20, *Isa 49:4, Gal 2:2; +*Gal 4:11, *+Php 2:16.

My Concluding Comment:

What we most need is a revival of daily reading and study of the Bible to take place in the life of every Christian. For this there is no substitute strategy that will work.

Despite the sad decline in church attendance and affiliation that has taken place at an increasing pace over the last ten years, all hope is not lost! This trend can be overcome and reversed. How? Get busy and start doing real Bible study.

Too many Christians, whether in the pew or in the pulpit, think they know the Bible so well already that there is no need to further engage in serious Bible study.

One pastor whose ministry I sat under for ten years responded, when I suggested the need to encourage small group home Bible studies, responded in disdain: “All this church needs is another Bible study!” Very obviously, this pastor, like too many pastors, had no idea what a real Bible study is like!

A dear pastor I met in John’s Bible and Bookstore in Detroit told me, when I asked how he went about teaching his church members how to study the Bible, “If I did that, I’d soon be out of a job!” Of course, the opposite is true.

Dr. Gary Elfner, with whom I worked at Mott Media, told me that I needed to find a way to teach Pastors how to use The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge!

A pastor I sat under for about five years, when I suggested he would find The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge to be a most helpful resource in his own Bible study and sermon preparation, responded “I already have set up my own method of sermon preparation so I don’t need or want any additional resources.”

That is the pastor who told me, when he first visited my home, “Jerry, you talk too much about the Lord and too much about the Bible.”

That is also the pastor who told me I needed “to find a church that believed like I believe.”

I notice with gratefulness that many of my Christian friends on Facebook encourage others to faithfulness in regularly attending church. I sometimes respond with a reference to Romans 15:7. If you are in a church that faithfully teaches the Bible and strongly encourages daily personal Bible reading and study, thank God for the means of genuine Christian fellowship He has  provided  for you. Support your church and pastor every way you can.

But my negative experience with some pastors and churches is not an isolated problem–it is mostly to be found everywhere. George Barna, I have read, has identified a trend such that where once 80% of those who claim a Bible-believing faith are attending church regularly while 20% are no longer affiliated with any church, he stated that in his opinion in ten or twenty years those numbers will be reversed, with only 20% of Christians attending church, and 80% will no longer be affiliated with any church. I think “the handwriting is on the wall,” but if more people can be encouraged to do daily Real Bible Study using Bible study tools like The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge, this trend can be reversed!

“No revival is more to be desired than that of systematic, personal Bible study!”

My Answers to Two More Questions About the New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

4-11-23 My answers to two questions on Logos Forum re NTSK

Mark asked about my comment:

“So for some things, this new edition of The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge is even more complete and accurate than The Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury, though it does not have anywhere near the extensive content.”

Thanks for your very helpful comments on this thread.  And of course for your tireless efforts to produce a resource that many find very helpful in their study of God’s Word.

Let me ask, please, a follow up question.  Is it possible that one day, the many updates that have completed TNTOSK may one day make its way into TUCRT?

Secondly, what would you say is the usefulness of the extensive content found in TUCRT as opposed to what is currently in TNTOSK?

I responded:

Thank you, Mark, for such perceptive questions!

(1) “Is it possible that one day, the many updates that have completed TNTOSK may one day make its way into TUCRT?”

Almost all of the corrections made in this new edition of The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge are taken from The Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury. Probably less than a dozen reference errors are newly corrected since I did The Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury.

The Figure of Speech Index in The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge was greatly corrected from the same but newer Figure of Speech Index given in The Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury. However, the Publisher found some errors, some lack of correspondence, some missing connections between what is listed in the Figure of Speech Index and what is provided in the text of The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge. It took me six weeks to figure out how to correct these problems. They are now completely corrected in this new printing of The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge (and, I presume, its Kindle version).

(2) “What would you say is the usefulness of the extensive content found in TUCRT as opposed to what is currently in TNTOSK?”

The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge even as it stands in the edition available in Logos Bible Software is still in the newly released printed and Kindle edition not so different from each other that the average occasional user of this resource would notice the differences between the two. A “power user” (like me) that uses The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge will probably appreciate the lack of wrong references present in my original work.

The Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury is a greatly expanded version of The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge. It contains many more cross references, including for the New Testament all the reciprocal references (the inclusion for each verse all the references elsewhere in the original Treasury of Scripture Knowledge that contain references to that verse, and for many verses, the New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge). I completed this feature for all the prophets and minor prophets in the Old Testament, and for all the over 1800 verses listed in the “Key Verse Comparison Chart” of The New Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible which contains verses from every book of the Bible. From the Preface to that chart: “The verses were selected for their doctrinal importance and for their familiarity to readers of the Bible by a team of scholars, editors, and laity.” The UCRT contains many more notes and associated bibliography restored from Bagster’s Comprehensive Bible, as well as a corrected index to those four thousand philological and geographical, etc., notes. And much more, all detailed in the UCRT preface material.

Consider the Bible text, Romans 15:7,

My Reply to Questions About the Updated New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

4-10-23 Reply to Re New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge revised

I posted the following comment in the Logos General Forum:

Mark raised the question above:

I am sorry, but I am still confused. Please make is clear.  What is the difference between TNTOSK and TUCRT? From your comments, one is contained in the other.  Is TNTOSK contained in TUCRT, meaning the TUCRT is more complete or the other way around?”

Others have also raised interesting questions.

After at least 26 years of pre-digital age meticulous Bible study using such resources in my personal Bible study (see the Bibliography in the New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge and the Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury), I compiled additional cross references in many of my wide-margin Bibles. I used these as my first basis of increasing the number of cross references given in the original Treasury of Scripture Knowledge.

The original Treasury of Scripture Knowledge content was taken directly from Bagster’s Comprehensive Bible. The cross references in the Comprehensive Bible were taken directly from the cross references supplied by Scott in Scott’s Commentary and Bagster’s Polyglot Bible. Scott’s references were taken from the major reference Bibles available in his day with references supplied by Canne, Blayney, Browne and others.

On page 25 of volume one of Scott’s Commentary in a Postscript to the Preface, Scott states in his first paragraph:

“As the Marginal References formed no part of the original plan of this publication, but have, with very great labor, been added to the subsequent editions; it may be proper here to state some particulars respecting them.”

Therefore, to suggest that there is any connection between the references and the opinions expressed by Scott in his commentary and elsewhere to which at least one commentator on this thread objected is mistaken. It is mistaken because Scott himself states where the cross references he furnished for later editions of his Commentary came from. The cross references are given for the Bible text, not the notes in his Commentary.

My New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge was published in 1992. In the early 2000’s Nelson Publisher desired a simplified version of the NTSK which would make for a smaller, shorter volume. I took over two years to produce the requested volume, published in 2007 under the title Nelson’s Cross Reference Guide to the Bible. To compress the NTSK, I removed nearly all the notes, all the chapter headings, and all the symbols except for the “+” symbol, which means “find more here.” I consolidated redundant cross references where these occurred to over 1800 single main reference points designated by the “+” symbol. Thus, in compressing the NTSK I did not lose any of the cross reference connections found in the NTSK.

Perhaps about 2009 I came upon a discussion thread on the Internet where users of the e-Sword Bible software program were wishing it possible to have the New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge in that software. They were especially interested in having more references to the Old Testament passages for the Sermon on the Mount. I joined in the discussion and indicated that I had been expanding the cross references beyond those I furnished for the New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge for my own use in my personal Bible study.

In 2010 I began preparing a much more complete collection of cross references. I completed the process in 2016. This new work was titled The Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury. After he completed processing and compiling my Word docx files into software format for e-Sword, Rick Meyers asked me, “Jerry, do you know how many cross references are in The Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury?” I told him I had no idea, only that I knew there are now about 7000 references just in Psalm 119. He then told me my new work contains over 900,000 references!

In 2022 I was contacted by Thomas Nelson Publishers. They requested my help in bringing The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge back in print. These new people at Nelson were astonished that the Publisher had allowed this reference work to go out of print about 1999. They said they intend to keep it in print from now on.

I offered suggestions as to which printing should be the basis of any new edition so that my previous suggestions and corrections would be preserved. Then they discovered that my Figure of Speech Index did not fully match the content of The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge. They caught many problems and anomalies I had no way of spotting in the 1980s when I first produced the text and indexes on hundreds of 5 1/4″ floppy disks!

I spent many weeks last year resolving these issues and entering several hundred additional corrections I had marked in my copy of the 1992 edition across the whole text of The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge. Even the Name Index has been corrected with three or so names missed in my first compilation. So for some things, this new edition of The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge is even more complete and accurate than The Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury, though it does not have anywhere near the extensive content.

There is absolutely no way using Logos Bible software alone (minus my resource) that anyone could come up with anything approaching the extensive cross references I have hand-collected for over 50 years.

As for the usefulness of such cross references, perhaps no one has said it better than R. A. Torrey in his Introduction to the original Treasury of Scripture Knowledge:

“About twenty years ago I saw for the first time “The Treasury of Scripture Knowledge.” I was interested in the book at once, and commenced to use it in my daily study of the Word of God. I went through book after book of the Bible, verse by verse, with the aid of “The Treasury.” I found that it enabled me, better than all the commentaries, to come to a true knowledge of God’s meaning.

“There is no other commentary on the Bible so helpful as the Bible itself. There is not a difficult passage in the Bible that is not explained and made clearer by other passages of the Bible, and this book is marvelously useful in bringing to light those other parts of the Bible that throw light upon the portion that is being studied.

“But not only does the book illuminate the dark places, it also emphasises the truth by bringing in a multitude of witnesses. It also greatly strengthens faith, for one cannot study his Bible with the aid of “The Treasury of Scripture Knowledge” without getting a deeper conviction of the unity of the entire Book. As he compares Scripture with Scripture and sees how what Paul says fits in to what Jesus said, and John said, and Peter said, and Isaiah said, and the Psalmist said; when he sees how every doctrine of the New Testament regarding Christ, His Divine-human nature, His holy character, His atoning death, and His resurrection, ascension, and coming again is enfolded in the types of the Pentateuch, Prophets, and Psalms, he becomes overwhelmingly convinced that the whole Bible has one real Author behind the many human authors. “The Treasury of Scripture Knowledge” enables one, not only to understand the Word, but to feed upon the Word.”

Daily Bible Nugget #737, Matthew 28:7

The Nugget:

Matthew 28:7  And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.

Some Related Verses:

Matthew 28:6  He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.

Mark 16:6  And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him.

More Context:

Mat 27:62  Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate,
Mat 27:63  Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again.
Mat 27:64  Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first.
Mat 27:65  Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can.
Mat 27:66  So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.

The Predicament:

Mat 28:11  Now when they were going, behold, some of the watch came into the city, and shewed unto the chief priests all the things that were done.
Mat 28:12  And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers,
Mat 28:13  Saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept.
Mat 28:14  And if this come to the governor’s ears, we will persuade him, and secure you.
Mat 28:15  So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day.

The Lie Exposed:

Joh 20:3  Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulchre.
Joh 20:4  So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulchre.
Joh 20:5  And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in.
Joh 20:6  Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes lie,
Joh 20:7  And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself.
Joh 20:8  Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw, and believed.

What so impressed John that he responded with belief?

Peter’s immediate reaction is given by Luke:

Luk 24:12  Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulchre; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass.

Contrast the response of John:

Joh 20:8  Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw, and believed.

My Comment:

Peter saw the same evidence John saw, but without the insight John possessed immediately upon viewing the scene carefully. The clothes remained “laid by themselves,” virtually undisturbed, but without the securely wrapped body that they had once contained!

What this proves:

The disciples could not have stolen the body–how could they do that, if they in fact stole the body, leaving the clothes behind, still wrapped like a mummy? If they stole the body, how did they get it out of the grave wrappings–leaving the wrappings behind and undisturbed? If they were intent on removing the body from the tomb, taking care to do so quickly, in a manner not to disturb the sleeping Temple Guards, why not carry off the dead body in its wrapping?

The combined Gospel accounts prove that the tomb was indeed empty, but with evidence that Jesus had been there–for the grave wrappings remained behind undisturbed but without Him in them, a testimony to the bodily resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. John saw and believed. So should we.

Who are the Elect?

3-30-23 Who are the Elect

Muslim claim:

The ‘elect’ consists of only 144000 people.

Revelation 7

3 “Do not harm the land or the sea or the trees until we put a seal on the foreheads of the servants of our God.” 4 Then I heard the number of those who were sealed: 144,000 from all the tribes of Israel.”

Do not believe in this verse. It’s basically saying out of billions of people who have ever lived on this planet only 144000 Jewish Christians virgin men enter heaven (reference: revelation 14).

Jesus would open only a small gate for those who believe him:

Matthew 7:13-14

13 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and ONLY A FEW find it.

Whereas Allah opens 8 gates of Paradise for us:

“Paradise has eight gates, and one of them is called Ar-Raiyan through which none will enter but those who observe fasting.” [Sahih al-Bukhari 3257. Book 59, Hadith 67]

My Response:

That is not what the Bible teaches. This IS what some false cults, including the Jehovah’s Witnesses, wrongly teach.

The very verse you cite, Revelation 7:4, states these individuals are from all the tribes of Israel. They are all part of a select group present on earth at the same time. They are all from the 12 tribes of Israel. This group of 144,000 is mentioned again in Revelation chapter 14, where at verse 4, we learn they are all men, virgins, who have not been defiled with women.

To suggest that only 144,000 is the total number of individuals who will ever be saved, or as Jehovah’s Witnesses claim, are the only ones who can have a “heavenly hope,” is a very mistaken interpretation of what the Bible actually teaches.

Revelation 7:9 speaks of a great number, so great that no one could count them, who are in heaven.

You may believe that “Allah opens 8 gates of Paradise for us.”

The Bible teaches:

2 Peter 3:9

9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

King James Version

Does Islam teach anything about the subject of repentance? Jesus did:

Mar 1:14 Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God,

Mar 1:15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

Luk 13:3 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

Joh 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Joh 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

Joh 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Joh 20:30 And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book:

Joh 20:31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

For further in-depth study of Revelation 7:4 see the notes and references from The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge or The Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury which I share below:

which were sealed. Rev 9:4.

an hundred and forty and four thousand. What is the significance of the number? Vincent states this number is symbolical of fixedness and full completion.

Reginald T. Naish, in his volume Spiritual Arithmetic, suggests that since this number contains the square of twelve, it “is naturally associated with that number, which is perfect government. It emphasizes it, and expresses spiritually the fact that perfect government of the life is only possible through the agency of the Holy Spirit. Hence it may well be called, the number of the Spirit-guided life.”

In Gen 1:2, the Hebrew word translated “move” (rachaph) has a numerical value or gematria of 288, or 144 x 2, Its next occurrence is Deut 32:11, where it is translated “fluttered.” Naish states “In both these passages the gracious work of the Heavenly Dove, the Holy Spirit of God, is described.”

Other occurrences of this number are to be found in the word “eastward” (Gen 2:8) in the phrase “eastward in Eden,” showing that God intended man “should live a life of perfect government, a wonderful garden life, bringing forth the fruit of the Spirit, and finding their chief joy in communion with their loving God.”

The cubic capacity of the ark, found by multiplying its three dimensions of 300 cubits, 50 cubits, and 30 cubits, was 450,000 cubic cubits, a number whose prime factors are 5x5x5x5x5x144.

The number appears here in Rev 7:4 of the number “sealed by the Holy Spirit before God’s judgments fall on earth. It does not of course mean that this identical number are saved in that time of tribulation. It is only using the numbers 144 and 10 in the spiritual sense in which these numbers are used through Scripture to tell of those who by the power of the Holy Spirit are kept from that time of trouble.”

The same number occurs in Revelation 14, “Again, we are given a symbolical picture of those who have yielded their lives wholly to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. They are taken up to be with Christ, their Savior, before the actual ’harvest of the earth’ is reaped” (Spiritual Arithmetic, pp. 107-109).

Who are the 144,000? The Jehovah’s Witnesses teach that the 144,000 is the body of spirit-begotten believers who have a “heavenly hope” (Rom 8:24, Eph 4:4, Col 1:5, Heb 7:19, 1Pe 1:3, 1Jn 3:3). All other believers can have only an “earthly hope” (Job 14:7, Jer 31:17, Act 26:6).

Once the Watchtower organization had more than 144,000 adherents, the teaching was developed that the “great multitude” mentioned later in the chapter (Rev 7:9) referred to those Christians who had only an earthly hope.

Jehovah’s Witnesses teach that members of the “great multitude” who have only an earthly hope do not need to be born again (see related note, Joh 3:7).

Peters remarks “It is a matter of amazement how coolly and deliberately men can appropriate Scripture to themselves which relates to the future. Sects, at various times, have professed to be those sealed ones” (Theocratic Kingdom, vol. 2, p. 323, note 1).

Not considering that the number sealed refers to a time yet future, Jehovah’s Witnesses claim the number represents the total number of those who can be born again and have a heavenly hope.

How long would it take for the apostolic church of the New Testament to reach the size of 144,000 converts? Suppose we assume that the first converts were zealous witnessing Christians during the lifetime of the apostles. Suppose each convert was able to win just one person to Christ each year of his new life in Christ, and that each of these converts continued to win an additional convert each year.

Take into account only the growth theoretically possible for the new converts won by the original group of 5,000 converts mentioned in the book of Acts. Exclude from consideration any additional converts won through the ministry of the apostles (Paul, Barnabas, Apollos, and the original twelve disciples) to compensate for any of the original 5000 who may not have been active soul winners.

In the year A.D. 33, the size of the church would be 5,000, In 34 A.D., 10,000; 35 A.D., 20,000; 36 A.D., 40,000; 37 A.D., 80,000; 38 A.D., 160,000—assuming each new convert continued to win one additional convert per year.

Thus before Paul began his first missionary journey in A.D. 45, the New Testament church could easily have surpassed the figure of 144,000 genuine converts. If any converts beyond that figure were limited to an earthly hope without opportunity for new birth and “heavenly hope,” this most certainly would be reflected in the teaching of the New Testament epistles of Peter or Paul. The earliest of Paul’s epistles was written in A.D. 52 or 54, fourteen or more years after the time the New Testament church exceeded the 144,000 maximum number the Jehovah’s Witnesses teach can have a heavenly hope.

Is this situation reflected in the writings of Paul? At the time Paul wrote 2 Thessalonians (A.D. 52 or 54), he specifically confirms that the “falling away” or apostasy had not yet occurred (2Th 2:3). This Scripture evidence would lead us to believe that the vast body of believers had remained faithful. What few that fell away during this time would be more than made up by any converts won beyond the first five years after Pentecost.

If the claim of Jehovah’s Witnesses that the heavenly hope is limited to 144,000 has any validity, the significance of that hope for anyone today is purely historical, for since this number was reached within five years of Pentecost, no person alive today could possibly lay claim to be one of that fixed number, not even the leaders of the Watchtower in Brooklyn, New York.

Following Jehovah Witness doctrine to its logical conclusion, the apostle Paul must have been mistaken in his theology, for he continued to emphasize the “heavenly hope” and the necessity of the “new birth” (2Co 5:17; 2Co 6:2, Gal 6:15) long after the “heavenly class” was complete in number.

The 144,000 of Rev 7:4; Rev 14:1 do not pertain to persons who have lived before now, but to a specific group in the future. The book of Revelation supplies its own outline in Rev 1:19, The 144,000 are mentioned well after Rev 4:1, where the third grand division of the book pertaining to “things which must be hereafter” commences.

Therefore, these events must take place during the “day of the Lord” (Rev 1:10 note), after the rapture of the church (1Th 4:16, 17, 18), and during the Great Tribulation.

The 144,000 are all males (Rev 14:4), and are all Jews (Rev 7:4, “of all the tribes of the children of Israel”).

Scripture speaks of three categories of persons its contents concern: the Jews, the Gentiles, and the church of God (1Co 10:32). What is stated in Rev 7:4 pertains to Israel—it cannot pertain to any other group.

The names of the tribes of Israel are nowhere in Scripture ever applied to the Gentiles or the church of God.

Furthermore, the 144,000 are not the only saints in heaven. They were preceded by all those who died in Christ before the rapture (+*2Co 5:8, 1Th 4:14). They are preceded by those who have been martyred for Christ (*Rev 6:9, 10, 11).

There are five raptures in the first resurrection; the 144,000 constitute only one of these five. The five raptures are:

(1) Christ and the saints in Jerusalem at his first resurrection, 1Co 15:20; 1Co 15:23, Mat 27:52, 53, Eph 4:8, 9, 10,

(2) Afterward, they that are Christ’s at his coming, 1Co 15:23; 1Co 15:51, 52, 53, 54, +*Luk 21:34, 35, 36, +*Joh 14:1, 2, 3, 2Co 5:1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, Eph 5:27, Php 3:11; Php 3:20, 21, Col 3:4, 1Th 2:19; 1Th 3:13; 1Th 4:13, 14, 15, 16, 17; 1Th 5:9; 1Th 5:23, 2Th 2:1; 2Th 2:7, Jas 5:7, 8, 1Pe 5:4, 1Jn 2:28; 1Jn 3:2,

(3) The 144,000 Jews saved in the first 3 1/2 years of the tribulation (of Daniel’s 70th week), caught up to heaven as the manchild, Rev 12:5; Rev 14:1, 2, 3, 4, 5, Isa 66:7, 8, Dan 12:1,

(4) The great multitude of tribulation saints saved after rapture number two above, during Rev 6:1—Rev 19:21,

(5) The rapture of the two witnesses, ending the first resurrection which began with the resurrection of Christ, Rev 11:7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 1Co 15:20; 1Co 15:23.

The 144,000 do not comprise the totality of all saints possessing a “heavenly hope” throughout this age. All of the 144,000 are on the earth at the same time. This is evidenced by the fact that they are as a group “sealed” and protected from the tribulation by the angel.

The 144,000 do not constitute the “little flock.” The “little flock” is comprised of all born-again believers. The flock is little because there are “few that be saved” (+*Mat 7:14). The term “flock” is used in the New Testament for the true church made up of born-again believers (Act 20:28).

The “other sheep” are the Gentile Christians who, in addition to the Jewish believers, are now being constituted one body in Christ, the church (Act 10:45; Act 15:7; Act 15:17, +*Eph 4:4).

The Great Tribulation is still future, and pertains to Israel. The church is raptured prior to the manifestation of the Antichrist, 2Th 2:8 note, and prior to the Great Tribulation (Joh 14:1, 2, 3, 1Co 15:51, 52, Php 3:21, 1Th 4:16, 17, 18, +*2Th 1:7; 2Th 2:1, +*Tit 2:13 note).

Christ’s Second Advent occurs at the end of the tribulation, when Christ personally destroys the Antichrist. Since it is certain that Antichrist is destroyed before the Millennium, this proves absolutely that Christ’s coming is premillennial (2Th 2:8 note).

At the Second Advent, Christ returns visibly in power and great glory (+*Mat 16:27 note) with his saints to rule over His eternal kingdom on this earth (+*Dan 7:13; +*Dan 7:14, Zec 14:5; Zec 14:9, +*2Ti 4:1 note).

Since the rapture of the Church and the Great Tribulation are future, and the 144,000 are protected during the first half of the Tribulation, the 144,000 must constitute a group that is yet future, and cannot pertain to any denomination or other religious group of today. **Rev 14:1; **Rev 14:3, Gen 15:5, Exo 20:6, Deut 1:11, Dan 7:10, *Rom 9:27; *Rom 11:5; *Rom 11:6.

all the tribes. The tribes of Dan and Ephraim are omitted from the list which follows, being replaced by Levi and Joseph. The reason for Ephraim’s omission is suggested by Hos 4:17. For possible reasons for Dan’s omission see the related texts and note (Gen 49:17, Lev 24:10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, Deut 29:18, 19, 20, 21, Jdg 5:17; Jdg 18:2-31, 1Ki 12:26-33, 1Ch 7:12 note. Jer 8:16). Dan and Ephraim are included in Ezekiel’s prophecy of their inheritance in the eternal earthly kingdom of Christ (Eze 48:1, 2; Eze 48:5, 6; Eze 48:32), demonstrating God’s faithfulness to his covenant and promise (Lev 26:44, Mal 3:6, Rom 11:29; Rom 15:8).
