Daily Bible Nugget #916, Psalm 34:1

The Nugget:

Psalm 34:1  I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth. (KJV)

Psalm 34:1  I will bless Jehovah at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth. (Darby translation)

Psalm 34:1  I will praise the LORD at all times. I will never stop singing his praises. (ERV, Easy to Read Version)

My Comment:

Even in difficulty, and here celebrating deliverance from difficulty, David praised the Lord.

Reading and studying the cross references for Psalm 34:1 will acquaint you with other passages in the Bible which affirm what is expressed here. I believe that the study of  Psalm 34 as a whole will help every Bible reader to grow spiritually.

Here are the cross references for Psalm 34:1 as I have newly expanded them for the Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury:

Daily Bible Nugget #915, Psalm 34:1 Title

The Nugget:

Psalm 34:1  I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth. (KJV)

Psalm 34:1  I will praise the LORD at all times. I will never stop singing his praises. (ERV, Easy to Read Version)

Psalm 34:1  I will always praise the LORD. (CEV, Contemporary English Version)

The Title of  Psalm 34:1

Psa 34:1  A Psalm of David, when he changed his behaviour before Abimelech; who drove him away, and he departed. (KJV)

Psa 34:1  A song of David when he pretended to be crazy so that Abimelech would send him away, which he did. (ERV)

Psa 34:1 (Written by David when he pretended to be crazy in front of Abimelech, so that Abimelech would send him away, and David could leave.) (CEV)

My Comment:

Psalm 34 is a very encouraging Psalm. I may post each of its verses with the associated cross references, one verse each day for 22 days. It is well worth our careful study.

The Psalm chapter outline and its title is readily visible in the printed edition of The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge. I suspect there is an e-Sword feature that very few users notice. In the “Commentaries” view it is possible to see for the Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury the chapter outline as well as notes on the  Psalm title when there is one. This information becomes visible when the “C” option (of “B,” “C,” “V” is selected, where “B” displays book notes; “C” displays chapter notes; “V” displays verse notes and cross references). Here is the chapter information for Psalm 34:

Psalms 34
David praises God, and exhorts others, from his own experience, to bless and trust in him, 1-10, He teaches the fear of God; and contrasts the privileges of the righteous with the miseries of the wicked, 11-22.

(Title.) A.M. 2942, B.C. 1062, Anno Sauli Regis Israelitarum, 34.

when. 1Sa 21:10—1Sa 22:1.

Abimelech. or, Achish. Note: Achish, king of Gath, is probably here called Abimelech, because that was a common name of the Philistine kings (see the parallel texts). This is the second of the acrostic, or alphabetical Psalms (the first being Psalms 25); each verse beginning consecutively with a letter of the Hebrew alphabet. The verse, however, which begins with wav, and which should come in between the fifth and sixth, is totally wanting; but as the 22nd, which now begins with pay, podeh, “redeemeth,” is entirely out of the series, it is not improbable that it was originally written oophodeh, “and redeemeth,” and occupied that situation, in which connection it reads admirably. Gen 20:2; Gen 26:1; Gen 26:26 note. 1Sa 21:10; 1Sa 21:13, 14, 15; 1Sa 22:1; 1Sa 29:8, Pro 29:25.

I will delve deeper into Psalm 34:1 itself in my next post.

Daily Bible Nugget #914, Proverbs 28:26

The Nugget:

Pro 28:26  He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool: but whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered.  (KJV)

Pro 28:26 Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered. (ESV, English Standard Version)

Pro 28:26 He that trusteth his own heart, the same, is a dullard, but, he that walketh wisely, the same, shall be delivered. (EB, Emphasized Bible)

Pro 28:26  Those who trust their own insight are foolish, but anyone who walks in wisdom is safe. (NLT, New Living Trnslation)

Pro 28:26 He whose faith is in himself is foolish; but everyone walking wisely will be kept safe. (BBE, Bible in Basic English)

Pro 28:26  It is foolish to follow your own opinions. Be safe, and follow the teachings of wiser people. (GNB, Good News Bible)

Pro 28:26  Whoever trusts his own heart is a fool. Whoever walks in wisdom will survive. (GW, God’s Word translation)

Pro 28:26  It is foolish to be too confident. Those who ask for advice are wise and will escape disaster. (ERV, Easy to Read Version)

Pro 28:26 Only fools would trust what they alone think, but if you live by wisdom, you will do all right. (CEV, Contemporary English Version)

My Comment:

The Bible is a great source of wisdom, guidance, and comfort. It is helpful to read it repeatedly. It is helpful to read more than one English Bible translation or version. I have given Proverbs 28:26 in ten translations or versions above, each chosen for the additional insight it provides.

Reading and studying the cross references for a verse of Scripture will help in seeing what the rest of the Bible says about its subjects or themes.

Here are the cross references I have newly gathered for Proverbs 28:26 for the Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury:

The Nugget:

Pro 28:28  When the wicked rise, men hide themselves: but when they perish, the righteous increase. (KJV)

Pro 28:28 When crooks are in control, everyone tries to hide, but when they lose power, good people are everywhere. (CEV, Contemporary English Version)

My Comment:

Proverbs 28:28 surely has a political application today. It is my hope and prayer that righteousness will prevail. Many are mislead by what is reported in the usual mainstream media sources. Too often editorial slant has taken over the newsroom. Propaganda often accompanies what is supposed to be news. More readers and viewers need to learn to distinguish truth from propaganda. I have reported “Nonsense in the News” several times in the past on this site.

I find that Mark Levin is one of the best sources to learn what is going on and what is behind what is going on. I hear him on the radio each evening except when his valuable program is blocked by sports coverage. Greg Hunter is another source I find to be reliable. Unfortunately, Greg Hunter recently suffered a heart attack so he has had to reduce how much he covers, though he has good guests and seems to be gathering more strength at his USA Watchdog site.

To dig deeper into Proverbs 28:28, read and study the cross references I have gathered in The Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury:

Daily Bible Nugget #912, Proverbs 28:27

The Nugget:

Pro 28:27  He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack: but he that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse. (KJV)

Pro 28:27  He that gives to the poor shall not be in want: but he that turns away his eye from him shall be in great distress. (LXX. Brenton translation)

Pro 28:27 He who gives to the poor will never be in need, but great curses will be on him who gives no attention to them. (BBE, Bible in Basic English)

Pro 28:27  Give to the poor and you will never be in need. If you close your eyes to the poor, many people will curse you. (GNB, Good News Bible)

Pro 28:27  Whoever gives to the poor lacks nothing. Whoever ignores the poor receives many curses. (GW, God’s Word translation)

Pro 28:27  Whoever gives to the poor will have plenty. Whoever refuses to help them will get nothing but curses. (ERV, Easy to Read Version)

Pro 28:27 Giving to the poor will keep you from poverty, but if you close your eyes to their needs, everyone will curse you. (CEV, Contemporary English Version)

My Comment:

I happened upon this verse during a recent evening home Bible study, something my wife and I do each evening. We encountered a mistake in the references given for the key words that giveth unto the  poor where the reference to Ezekiel 18:10 in The Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury should read Ezekiel 18:16. I will correct this mistake in the references as given below and further expand the references given for this verse at the same time.

When reading the individual proverbs collected in the book of Proverbs it is important to remember that these are statements of great wisdom that are generally true, but not absolute promises applicable to every case. Nevertheless, it is a good idea to read the book of Proverbs daily, one chapter a day. Read the chapter that corresponds to each day’s date. That way you will read the book of Proverbs through once a month. That was the advice I received as a high school student from my high school Sunday school teachers Dean Sawdon and John Boyko many years ago at the Highland Park Baptist Church in Detroit,  Michigan, then located at 25 Ford Avenue, Highland Park, Michigan. I for many years followed that advice.

To dig deeper into Proverbs 28:27, read the corrected and expanded cross references for this verse as newly prepared for The Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury:

Daily Bible Nugget #911, 1 Corinthians 13:13

The Nugget:

1Co 13:13  And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity. (KJV, King James Version)

1Co 13:13 So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love. (ESV, English Standard Version)

1Co 13:13  And now these three things remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love. (LEB, Lexham English Bible)

1Co 13:13  So these three things remain: faith, hope, and love. But the best one of these is love. (GW, God’s Word translation)

1Co 13:13 But now we still have faith, hope, love, these three; and the greatest of these is love. (BBE, Bible in Basic English)

1Co 13:13  So these three things continue: faith, hope, and love. And the greatest of these is love. (ERV, Easy to Read Version)

My Comment:

Many theologians and man-made theologies claim Sovereignty is God’s most significant attribute. I think the Bible is very clear that Love is God’s most significant attribute.

Love is not mere emotional attachment. Biblical love goes far deeper than that. Love is the focus of the greatest commandment, according to what Jesus taught (Matthew 22:36, 37, 38, 39, 40).

John 3:16 is a familiar verse to many Bible readers. John 3:16 tells us that “God so loved the world.” The grammar involved calls this a monadic construction. This means “world” is a single thing considered as not divisible but encompasses all mankind. Love for mankind as a whole is actually stated as an attribute of God in Titus 3:4.

Daily Bible Nugget #910, 1 Corinthians 13:12

The Nugget:

1Co 13:12  For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. (KJV)

1Co 13:12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known. (ESV, English Standard Version)

1Co 13:12 For now we see in a mirror indirectly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know in part, but then I will know fully, just as I have been fully known. (NET Bible)

1Co 13:12 For now we see a dim reflection in a looking-glass. But then we shall see face to face; Now what I know is imperfect, but then I shall know perfectly, as God knows me. (Williams NT)

1Co 13:12  For now we see through a mirror indirectly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I will know completely, just as I have also been completely known. (LEB, Lexham English Bible)

1Co 13:12 for we see now through a mirror obscurely, and then face to face; now I know in part, and then I shall fully know, as also I was known; (YLT, Young’s Literal Translation)

1Co 13:12 For now we see through a mirror by reflection, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known. (EMTV, English Majority Text Version)

1Co 13:12  What we see now is like a dim image in a mirror; then we shall see face-to-face. What I know now is only partial; then it will be complete—as complete as God’s knowledge of me. (GNB, Good News Bible)

1Co 13:12  Now we see a blurred image in a mirror. Then we will see very clearly. Now my knowledge is incomplete. Then I will have complete knowledge as God has complete knowledge of me. (GW, God’s Word translation)

1Co 13:12 For we see now through a dim window obscurely, but then face to face; now I know partially, but then I shall know according as I also have been known. (Darby translation)

1Co 13:12 For we see, as yet, through a dim window, obscurely, but, then, face to face: as yet, I gain knowledge, in part, but, then, shall I fully know, even as I was also fully known. (EB, Emphasized Bible)

1Co 13:12  It is the same with us. Now we see God as if we are looking at a reflection in a mirror. But then, in the future, we will see him right before our eyes. Now I know only a part, but at that time I will know fully, as God has known me. (ERV, Easy to Read Version)

1Co 13:12 Now all we can see of God is like a cloudy picture in a mirror. Later we will see him face to face. We don’t know everything, but then we will, just as God completely understands us. (CEV, Contemporary English Version)

My Comment:

Above, I have shared 13 English translations of 1 Corinthians 13:12. Each translation presents what the translator or translators see in the underlying New Testament Greek text. There is additional insight to be gained by understanding that the ancient mirrors of Paul’s day made of polished metal were nowhere near as clear in the image they reflected as our modern mirrors.

As much as the Bible as a whole teaches us about God, there is much more to know. That full and perfect knowledge of God awaits us when we see Him face to face. Our understanding of all that has affected us in this life will be much greater then!

Some additional insight into the teaching of 1 Corinthians 13:12 can be had by studying what the rest of the Bible says about these things. Enjoy the cross reference Bible study from this newly updated and expanded Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury:

1Co 13:11 When we were children, we thought and reasoned as children do. But when we grew up, we quit our childish ways. (Williams NT)

1Co 13:11 When I was a babe, as a babe I was speaking, as a babe I was thinking, as a babe I was reasoning, and when I have become a man, I have made useless the things of the babe; (YLT, Young’s Literal Translation of the Bible)

1Co 13:11 When I was a child, I talked as a child, and I reasoned as a child, and I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I laid aside the things of childhood. (Murdock NT)

1Co 13:11 When I was a child, I made use of a child’s language, I had a child’s feelings and a child’s thoughts: now that I am a man, I have put away the things of a child. (BBE, Bible in Basic English)

1Co 13:11  When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, and I made plans like a child. When I became a man, I stopped those childish ways. (ERV, Easy to Read Version)

1Co 13:11 When we were children, we thought and reasoned as children do. But when we grew up, we quit our childish ways. (CEV, Contemporary English Version)

My Comment:

Sometimes it is true that with age comes wisdom. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. When it comes to spiritual growth, too often that is not the case (Hebrews 5:12). The writer of the book of Hebrews pointedly expresses the expectation that we grow spiritually, “Heb 6:9  But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak.” Peter writes that we are to “1Pe 2:2  As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:” and “2Pe 3:18  But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.” It is not a very good idea to remain stunted in our spiritual growth. To really grow, read and study the Bible for yourself.

The Nugget:

1Co 13:10  But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. (KJV)

1Co 13:10 But what is perfect will someday appear, and what isn’t perfect will then disappear. (YLT, Young’s Literal Translation)

1Co 13:10 But, as soon as that which is complete is come, that which is in part, shall be done away. (Emphasized Bible)

1Co 13:10  But when perfection comes, the things that are not complete will end. (ERV, Easy to Read Version)

1Co 13:10  But when what is complete comes, then what is incomplete will no longer be used. (GW, God’s Word translation)

1Co 13:10 But what is perfect will someday appear, and what isn’t perfect will then disappear. (CEV, Contemporary English Version)

My Comment:

This verse is another very controversial text. There are major differences in how different scholars interpret this verse. Is it possible to know exactly what Paul meant when he wrote these words? Of several different interpretations possible, even our English Bible translations sometimes reflect those different interpretations.

To dig deeper into this verse, read the commentary and cross references I have furnished for 1 Corinthians 13:10 as newly expanded for The Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury:

1 Corinthians 13:10
when that. 1Co 13:8; 1Co 13:12, +*Isa 24:23; Isa 60:19, 20, Hos 6:3, Hab 2:14, Mat 13:11, *John 8:31; *John 8:32; John 13:7; John 14:29; John 16:13; John 16:25, 2Co 5:7, 8, *Heb 9:28, 1Pe 1:10, 11, 12, 2Pe 1:19, **1Jn 3:2; *1Jn 4:8, Rev 21:22, 23; Rev 22:4, 5.

which is perfect. This phrase has vexed interpreters, and no agreement upon its application has been reached. It may refer to:

(1) the Second Advent of Christ, 1Co 13:12, 1Co 11:26,

(2) the completion of the canon; that is, the writing of the inspired books of New Testament Scripture, so ending the need for revelatory and confirmatory gifts, John 15:15, Rev 22:18,

(3) The times of restitution of all things, the restoration of the kingdom to Israel, the times of refreshing, called “the regeneration,” Mat 19:28, Act 1:6; Act 3:19, 20, 21, **Heb 11:39; **Heb 11:40,

(4) the final maturing of the body of Christ, Eph 4:13,

(5) the death and returning to be with Christ of the believer, John 14:2, 3, 2Co 5:8, Php 1:21; Php 1:23; Php 3:12, 1Jn 3:2, Rev 14:13.

Several of these views have staunch advocates, particularly views 1, 2, and 4. For a thorough discussion of these matters see Robert L. Thomas, Understanding Spiritual Gifts, Moody Press, 1978. 1Co 2:6; 1Co 14:20, Mat 5:48, John 15:15, Rom 12:2, Php 3:12; Php 3:15, *Eph 4:13, Heb 5:14; Heb 6:1.

Daily Bible Nugget #907, 1 Corinthians 13:9

The Nugget:

1Co 13:9  For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. (KJV)

1Co 13:9 For, in part, are we gaining knowledge, and, in part, are we prophesying, (EB, Emphasized Bible by Rotherham)

1Co 13:9 Now we know in part, and we prophesy in part. (EMTV, English Majority Text Version)

1Co 13:9 For what we know is incomplete and what we prophesy is incomplete. (Williams NT)

1Co 13:9  For our gifts of knowledge and of inspired messages are only partial; (GNB, Good News Bible)

1Co 13:9  These will all end because this knowledge and these prophecies we have are not complete. (ERV, Easy to Read Version)

1Co 13:9 For our knowledge is only in part, and the prophet’s word gives only a part of what is true: (BBE, Bible in Basic English)

1Co 13:9 We don’t know everything, and our prophecies are not complete. (CEV, Contemporary English Version)

1Co 13:9  Our knowledge is incomplete and our ability to speak what God has revealed is incomplete. (GW, God’s Word translation)

My Comment:

I have presented ten different English translations or versions of 1 Corinthians 13:9. For English readers, comparing several different translations of a passage helps to see what translators see in the underlying original Greek text. Often this clarifies the meaning of the verse or passage.

Another most important method of Bible study is to read the cross references given for the verse or passage being studied. The Bible does not tell all about a subject it mentions in one place. To learn what the whole Bible says about a subject or topic it is necessary to read all the material on that subject found in the Bible. Cross references are the best and easiest way to make a study of what is mentioned elsewhere on the subject.

Even Bible scholars sometimes mistakenly think that cross references are merely “proof-texting,” rather than a legitimate means of studying the Bible. When I read them say this, I immediately know they do not know the difference, and have likely never studied the Bible seriously this way. “Proof texting” is collecting a set of Bible passages, Bible verses, in such a way as to prove a Bible doctrine in a manner that does not take into account other passages which do not support that interpretation.

Elsewhere on this site I have written an article about where cross references come from. Reading that article will help dispel some mistaken notions many otherwise quite knowledgeable students of the Bible sometimes have.

Many Bible readers understand that “Scripture interprets Scripture.”

Dig deeper into 1 Corinthians 13:9 by consulting the cross references I have collected for this verse in this updated edition of The Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury:
