Daily Bible Nugget #673, Genesis 3:8

The Nugget:

Gen 3:8  And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.

The Question:

In an ongoing discussion today of Genesis 3:8 where a Muslim poster raised the question of how the Bible could be correct if it says God walked in the Garden of Eden if it is also true that Jesus said in John 4:24 that God is a spirit?

I jumped in and offered the following two-paragraph comment in answer to the Opening Post’s question:

My Comment:

The Bible states (John 4:24) that God is spirit. We are also told that no man has seen God at any time (John 1:18). Yet there are a number of Bible passages in the Old Testament that specifically state that men or people have seen God (Genesis 17:22. 32:30. Exodus 24:9, 10. Exodus 33:11. Judges 6:22. Judges 13:22). I believe the best answer is furnished by Genesis 17:22 and its preceding and following context. Recall that when Jesus was asked if He had seen Abraham, Jesus answered in the affirmative. Jesus said also that “before Abraham was I am” (John 8:58) after Jesus said “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it and was glad” (John 8:56). It is clear from the Bible, therefore, that when anyone saw God it was Jesus who they saw in His pre-incarnate form as the Angel of Jehovah. Note that in context the Angel of Jehovah is called God. Note also that there are TWO Jehovah’s on the scene at the same time in Genesis 19:24.

All this may be very hard for many to understand. Study the Bible carefully and you will find that what I have presented in my paragraph above is absolutely true to what the Bible itself teaches.

Daily Bible Nugget #672, Romans 3:25

Rom 3:25  Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; (KJV)

My Comment:

Romans 3:25 is a critically important verse about the Atonement of Christ. For many apparently historical reasons the doctrine of the Atonement of Christ has been largely misunderstood. I have been studying this subject for many years and I am still studying this subject. I believe that the Lavender New Testament and its careful notes are the most helpful resource I have found so far on the subject. Help in reading old books

My Comment:

Many who would read the Bible today need some help about how to understand it. Some people need to learn how to read old books! The Bible is a great work of literature. In that light, I share some quotations and thoughts about reading great literature and then apply these principles to the Bible itself.

I have shared these thoughts with students in my English classes:

“The Reader and His Taste”:

The goal is to adopt the adult attitude, “If I do not understand this or like it, there is something the matter with me and not the selection.” What do others find in this? What have others found in it? Why does it continue to be a favorite of discriminating people? It has often been said that Pilate did not judge Jesus but judged himself. So often this is true of us in relation to art. The selection is not on trial but we are. New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge Note at 1 Corinthians 2:13

the words. This is a specific claim to verbal inspiration. Divine inspiration of Scripture is asserted also at 2Ti 3:16, as is the divine inspiration of the Scripture writers, 2Pe 1:21.

Failure to accept the Bible’s own testimony to itself has closed this Book to so-called “modern scholarship” (a misnomer if ever there was one!). Much modern scholarship is dishonest, for instead of explaining the Bible, it attempts to explain away the Bible, refusing to honestly come to grips with its claims and message.

In an effort to escape the Bible’s obvious message, dishonest scholarship has tried to deny its authenticity and authorship, ascribing, for example, the books of Moses to multiple late authorship;

denying the unity of Isaiah;

asserting that the gospels, particularly John, are of late origin, and do not reflect the so-called “historical Jesus.”

Some “modern scholarship” asserts the Gospels do not reflect true history but the views and traditions of the early Church of the third or fourth century—not explaining, of course,

(1) how books can be quoted or translated before they were written,

(2) or how such stupendous claims could be foisted upon a gullible public long after the possibility of disproof by eyewitnesses has passed.

The only way to get at the message of the Bible is to be completely open to its message.

To approach Scripture with humanistic and naturalistic (i.e. anti-theistic) presuppositions is to try to twist Scripture to fit a world view which it most emphatically will not support.

The only valid approach to Scripture is to be honest to its claims and message and grant its right to set forth a theistic, supernaturalistic world view.

To deny the possibility of miracle (as Hume and his modern counterparts) is to deny the possibility of history, for both are based upon the record of eye-witness testimony, and such denial is absurd.

There are more pathways to truth and knowledge than an arbitrarily narrowly defined so-called “scientific method.”

Like missing the right exit on a freeway, continued advance in the wrong direction is not progress; genuine progress will require a return to where we went wrong, and a fresh start in the right direction.

Much “scholarship” needs to recognize it has pursued a wrong path, and recognize that it needs to return to sound principles of former generations of reverent, truthful, believing scholarship.

It is neither truthful nor fair scholarship to approach a work of literature from a consistently unsympathetic and hostile world view in the attempt to legitimately understand its message.

Rather, in our attempt to understand a work of literature, we must let it speak for itself. The task of scholarship is to place the reader as close as possible in sympathetic relationship to the viewpoint of the original writer and recipients of the literary work, and not to attempt to explain it away in an effort to force it to agree with popular contemporary philosophical presuppositions. Daily Bible Nugget #671, Exodus 14:13

The Nugget:

Exo 14:13  And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever.

My Comment:

The Bible in the King James or Authorized Version has the expression “Fear not” 62 times. The similar expression “Fear ye not” used here occurs 8 times.

This Exodus account is doubted by skeptics. They say there is no historical record outside the Bible and no archaeological evidence that the exodus from Egypt ever took place.

My answer to that objection is twofold: (1) skeptics have not read widely and deeply enough to become knowledgeable about what evidences there are that do support the historicity of the Bible account (they haven’t bothered to read what K. Kitchen wrote in his book The Reliability of the Old Testament); (2) they have never answered the four arguments for historicity made by Charles Leslie in his book, Leslie’s Short and Easy Method with the Deists, which I have summarized and even simplified its English to make it easier reading for modern readers right here on this site ( https://www.realbiblestudy.com/?s=Leslie ). Leslie poses the question, how is it that an entire nation (Israel) could be imposed upon to accept a story of alleged history either at the time it happened or any time after if it were not true–especially since the history accounts for practices they have maintained from that day to this in an unbroken manner? I have referred atheists and unbelievers to the appropriate link on this site and challenged them to provide an answer or refutation of Leslie’s argument. So far, not one has ever attempted to do so.

We can take consolation in the words “Fear not.” God the Father and His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit, are firmly in control, come what may! (I borrowed and modified only just a little this encouraging word from Greg Hunter, who uses it at the end of each Friday’s “Weekly News Wrap-up” at his www.usawatchdog.com website).

Daily Bible Nugget #670, Philippians 4:19

The Nugget:

Php 4:19  But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

My Comment:

The Apostle Paul wrote this in response to the faithful support he had received from the Philippian church. Paul indicated that their giving would “abound to [their] account” (Philippians 4:17), and I think Paul may have had in mind what is expressed in John 15:5 as well as Proverbs 11:30.

Daily Bible Nugget #669, Psalm 84:11

My Comment:

My Comment:

This is a very encouraging prayer promise. We must use caution in its application. The caution required is stated in the Bible itself. The Bible is its own best interpreter. The best way to understand a particular passage or promise is to discover what the rest of the Bible has to say about the subject. I believe the best way to do that is to carefully read the cross-referenced verses for the passage, which I share below.

My Comment:

I was introduced to the helpful Bible study resource, The Treasury of Scripture Knowledge, by Miss Ellen Groh, a student at the Detroit Bible College. She taught a vacation Bible school class for high school students I attended at the Highland Park Baptist Church in the summer of 1954.

The subject of the class was “How to Study the Bible.” We were doing a careful study of the short book of 2 Timothy using several different study methods.

I had the opportunity to borrow and use The Treasury of Scripture Knowledge. I looked up its references for 2 Timothy 1:7. I was most encouraged at that time when I read the verses for the key words “a sound [mind]” for I was repeatedly criticized for being too interested in the Bible. I was told such an interest was unhealthy and would likely result in my losing my mind. Well, the Bible says exactly the opposite! The rest is history.

Daily Bible Nugget #666, Revelation 13:18

The Nugget:

Rev 13:18  Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

My Comment:

I have been asked, “What are you going to write about when you finally reach Daily Bible Nugget 666?” It seemed to me that the obvious topic ought to involve Revelation 13:18.

The “number of his name” (Revelation 13:17), “the number of the beast,” “the number of a man” (Revelation 13:18) all have reference to the seemingly mysterious number, “666.”

This is not a reference to computer bar codes and other secular instances of this number.

The number 666 is derived by a process called gematria. Gematria is the process of reading a name or other word or sequence of words as numbers. This can be done because both Greek and Hebrew letters have numerical values. Both the Greeks and the Hebrews could use their alphabet as numbers.

The “number of a man” will therefore be found by taking the letters of his name in Greek and adding those letter values together to get a total which  reads six hundred and sixty and six, or 666.

The Antichrist is a specific person. In the future, when he appears, there will be those who have the wisdom to “count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.”

There is an interesting note on Revelation 13:18 in the ESV Archaeology Study Bible on pages 1904 and 1905 which gives the label isopsephy to the process I have labeled gematria. This study Bible also mentions that in past history the letters of the name Nero Caesar as spelled in Hebrew add up to 666.

I have placed a rather full and unique note at Revelation 13:17 in The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge as well as in The Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury on the subject of the significance of numbers in the Bible, and particularly some initial findings in the study of the mathematical structure of Scripture.

Daily Bible Nugget #665, 1 Corinthians 1:9

The Nugget:

My Comment:

God is faithful. Paul knew by direct experience that things do not always appear to go well. He gives quite a list of difficulties he experienced in his second letter to the Corinthian church (2 Corinthians 11:23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28). Nevertheless, Paul writes these encouraging words, “God is faithful.” Paul was in prison when he wrote the book of Philippians, perhaps the most encouraging of all his letters even when read today. If you feel discouraged, read the book of Philippians!
