My Comment:

Above, I have shared Psalm 34:3 from eight English translations. This time I shared from the Ronald Knox translation: The Holy Bible: A translation from the Latin Vulgate in the light of the Hebrew and Greek originals; Authorized by the hierarchy of England and Wales and the hierarchy of Scotland. Sheed & Ward, Inc. New York, 1956.

The Knox translation is one of my favorite English Bible translations. I like the way Monsignor Knox renders the Acrostic Psalms in such a manner as to display their alphabetical structure by boldfacing the initial letter of each verse with a sequential English letter of the alphabet.  I bought this copy on 7-11-57 while working at the Michigan Bell Telephone Company.

I noticed that the mail distributor was spending much free time playing cards. I suggested that with the extra time he had available between mail runs he could better use his time reading the Bible. He said he could not do that because he was Roman Catholic. I said I would loan him my copy of a Roman Catholic Bible I had just purchased, a modern English version. He agreed to read it. I suggested that he read and reread the Gospel of John. He did that. When it came time that he was to be transferred to a different telephone office, he returned my Knox Bible. He had tears in his eyes. He said the Gospel of John repeatedly said “Believe, Believe, Believe.” Then he said, “Why does my church not emphasize this?” I suggested that he continue reading the Bible, and that is the last I saw of him. I pray he found true faith in our  Lord Jesus Christ by reading the Bible for himself.

Several times since then I have shared the Knox translation, especially the New Testament edition, with Roman Catholics. I gave a copy to one of my junior high school students when the family lost most of their possessions when their home burned down one night while they slept. Fortunately they escaped with their lives.

I shared a copy of the  Knox New Testament with a local businessman who became very upset at the scandals involving his church that made the news repeatedly. I hope he has found true faith in Christ as a result of reading the New Testament.

I might as well mention that I have never suggested to any of my Roman Catholic friends, fellow-workers, or students in public school that they should find a different church to attend. I leave that up to the working of the Holy Spirit.

My Comment:

David had a testimony to share. He was eager to share his experience of God’s faithfulness and deliverance with others. Humble people will be glad to hear what he has to say.

This echoes a pattern in life for those who know the Lord. Our lives will be a testimony to God’s grace and faithfulness. I have experienced instances where others knew where I stood immediately without  my ever saying a word about it. This has been true of fellow employees when I worked for the Michigan Bell Telephone Company. It has often been true of my students when I taught at the high school level in Detroit. The result has sometimes been that lives have been turned around for the better and souls have come to a saving knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom all credit and praise belongs.

My Comment:

Even in difficulty, and here celebrating deliverance from difficulty, David praised the Lord.

My Comment:

Psalm 34 is a very encouraging Psalm. I may post each of its verses with the associated cross references, one verse each day for 22 days. It is well worth our careful study.

The Psalm chapter outline and its title is readily visible in the printed edition of The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge. I suspect there is an e-Sword feature that very few users notice. In the “Commentaries” view it is possible to see for the Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury the chapter outline as well as notes on the  Psalm title when there is one. This information becomes visible when the “C” option (of “B,” “C,” “V” is selected, where “B” displays book notes; “C” displays chapter notes; “V” displays verse notes and cross references). My Comment:

The Bible is a great source of wisdom, guidance, and comfort. It is helpful to read it repeatedly. It is helpful to read more than one English Bible translation or version. I have given Proverbs 28:26 in ten translations or versions above, each chosen for the additional insight it provides.

Reading and studying the cross references for a verse of Scripture will help in seeing what the rest of the Bible says about its subjects or themes.

My Comment:

Proverbs 28:28 surely has a political application today. It is my hope and prayer that righteousness will prevail. Many are mislead by what is reported in the usual mainstream media sources. Too often editorial slant has taken over the newsroom. Propaganda often accompanies what is supposed to be news. More readers and viewers need to learn to distinguish truth from propaganda. I have reported “Nonsense in the News” several times in the past on this site.

I find that Mark Levin is one of the best sources to learn what is going on and what is behind what is going on. I hear him on the radio each evening except when his valuable program is blocked by sports coverage. Greg Hunter is another source I find to be reliable. Unfortunately, Greg Hunter recently suffered a heart attack so he has had to reduce how much he covers, though he has good guests and seems to be gathering more strength at his USA Watchdog site.

Daily Bible Nugget #912, Proverbs 28:27

My Comment:

I happened upon this verse during a recent evening home Bible study, something my wife and I do each evening. We encountered a mistake in the references given for the key words that giveth unto the  poor where the reference to Ezekiel 18:10 in The Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury should read Ezekiel 18:16. I will correct this mistake in the references as given below and further expand the references given for this verse at the same time.

When reading the individual proverbs collected in the book of Proverbs it is important to remember that these are statements of great wisdom that are generally true, but not absolute promises applicable to every case. Nevertheless, it is a good idea to read the book of Proverbs daily, one chapter a day. Read the chapter that corresponds to each day’s date. That way you will read the book of Proverbs through once a month. That was the advice I received as a high school student from my high school Sunday school teachers Dean Sawdon and John Boyko many years ago at the Highland Park Baptist Church in Detroit,  Michigan, then located at 25 Ford Avenue, Highland Park, Michigan. I for many years followed that advice.

My Comment:

Many theologians and man-made theologies claim Sovereignty is God’s most significant attribute. I think the Bible is very clear that Love is God’s most significant attribute.

Love is not mere emotional attachment. Biblical love goes far deeper than that. Love is the focus of the greatest commandment, according to what Jesus taught (Matthew 22:36, 37, 38, 39, 40).

John 3:16 is a familiar verse to many Bible readers. John 3:16 tells us that “God so loved the world.” The grammar involved calls this a monadic construction. This means “world” is a single thing considered as not divisible but encompasses all mankind. Love for mankind as a whole is actually stated as an attribute of God in Titus 3:4.

My Comment:

Above, I have shared 13 English translations of 1 Corinthians 13:12. Each translation presents what the translator or translators see in the underlying New Testament Greek text. There is additional insight to be gained by understanding that the ancient mirrors of Paul’s day made of polished metal were nowhere near as clear in the image they reflected as our modern mirrors.

As much as the Bible as a whole teaches us about God, there is much more to know. That full and perfect knowledge of God awaits us when we see Him face to face. Our understanding of all that has affected us in this life will be much greater then!

My Comment:

Sometimes it is true that with age comes wisdom. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. When it comes to spiritual growth, too often that is not the case (Hebrews 5:12). The writer of the book of Hebrews pointedly expresses the expectation that we grow spiritually, “Heb 6:9  But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak.” Peter writes that we are to “1Pe 2:2  As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:” and “2Pe 3:18  But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.” It is not a very good idea to remain stunted in our spiritual growth. To really grow, read and study the Bible for yourself.
