Daily Bible Nugget #716, Luke 1:36

The Nugget:

Luke 1:36  And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren. (KJV)

My Comment:

I have read a number of comments on line that argue Christians should not celebrate Christmas.

I can agree with one of the supporting arguments, namely, that Jesus was not born on December 25th.

But Luke includes a significant clue in Luke 1:36 that, taken carefully with other clues in the Bible text, enables the careful, even diligent student to quite closely determine when Jesus was born.

It is possible that John the Baptist, the son of Elizabeth, was conceived six months before Jesus was. It is therefore likely that Jesus would have been born six months later than John the Baptist was born.

We are told in Luke 1:5 that Zacharias, the father of John the Baptist, was “of the course of Abia.”

The cross references for Luke 1:5 for “of the course of Abia” are:

of the course. Luk 1:8, **1Ch 24:10; *1Ch 24:19, *2Ch 8:14; 2Ch 31:2, Ezr 6:18, Neh 12:4; Neh 12:17  (Abijah).

The order of service in the Temple of the Levites “by course” remained basically unchanged. Since the order has been relatively consistent over centuries of time, the precise time of year which Zechariah served in the Temple is known, for Luke specifies that he served in “the course of Abiah” or “Abijah” (Luke 1:5. 1 Ch 24:10).

I listened last night (Friday, December 23, 2022) to a very informative program on WLQV, AM1500, Detroit, from 9:30 to 9:45 pm. I cannot recall every detail presented, but I recall the general gist of the program.

The Bible evidence seems to indicate that December 25th or thereabouts is not the date or day of the birth of Jesus, but the date and day of His conception. About nine months or 280 days thereafter Mary gave birth to her son on what would have been the first day of the Feast of Tabernacles (Leviticus 23:34). Eight days later, on what would be the last day of the Feast of Tabernacles, Jesus was circumcised, Luke 2:21. This took place in the month of Tisri, part of September (see Young on Leviticus 23:34 as cited in the NTSK or UCRT). Much more evidence was provided in the radio program, but I have provided enough direct Biblical evidence in this post to confirm the accuracy of the information I heard.

We may in good conscience, therefore, joyfully celebrate Christmas at this time of year, even though it is more probable that the actual date of birth of our Lord Jesus Christ was in September, a time also which better accords with the shepherds still being in their fields (Luke 2:8).

My Comment:

I remember hearing Dr. Lehman Straus, then pastor of the Highland Park Baptist Church, teaching from this verse (1 Thessalonians 2:13). He emphatically stressed that “It is the Word of God that works in you.” Dr. Straus was a very effective Bible teacher if he impressed me that thoroughly such that I still remember that message today, six decades or so later! Dr. Straus frequently emphasized that though he was teaching in a Baptist church, he was not teaching Baptist doctrine but Bible doctrine.

I believe this principle is the key to continuing spiritual growth–continually receiving the Bible as the very Word of God. If you are not studying the Bible seriously on a regular, even daily basis (Acts 17:11), you are missing out on the spiritual growth you could and should be experiencing (2 Peter 3:18).

One of the most effective ways to study the Bible is to focus on a verse of special interest or concern to you and read the cross references furnished for that verse in such resources as the original Treasury of Scripture Knowledge, my expanded and corrected edition of that resource titled The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge, and for yet deeper and sometimes controversial study, my vastly expanded resource, The Ultimate Cross Reference Treasury.

More Ideas About Using The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

I just noticed that this site now reached 500 followers. Thank you to everyone who comes here to read what I have shared about God’s Word, the Bible.

I have used The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge and its predecessor, the original Treasury of Scripture Knowledge to encourage others to dig deeper into the Bible and grow in their Christian life by:

  1. giving this Bible study tool as a graduation gift.
  2. giving the New Treasury as a wedding gift.
  3. using the Treasury in neighborhood Bible studies
  4. using the New Treasury here on this site to answer Bible questions
  5. using the New Treasury to answer supposed Bible contradictions

I learned  some years ago that the head of a Bible College in Africa observed that anyone who owned a copy of The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge would be well-equipped to lead a prayer meeting, conduct a Bible study, teach Sunday school, preach the Gospel message, or even plant a new church. He desired that all the students at his college would find it possible to own and use their own copy of The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge.

Here is what I do to share what the Bible itself teaches using cross reference Bible study in a group setting. I give each person present with a Bible who is willing to read a verse aloud to the group one of the cross referenced Bible verses to read. That way a set of references may be read out loud in sequence but no one person has to turn to them all.

May God add His blessing to your study and sharing of God’s Word.

Applying the Story Behind the New Treasury

I shared recently the story behind The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge.

Very perceptive readers are able to read what I wrote and find many  practical ways to apply my experience to themselves and others to encourage more friends and contacts to become eager and self-motivated readers and students of the Bible.

I learned long ago, as a teacher, that many if not most students are helped more to learn what is being taught if what is taught is spelled out in careful detail.

So, in no particular order, here are some thoughts I have had:

  1. It is a good idea to introduce Bible study tools to young people at an early age. That way they have a whole lifetime to make use of them.
  2. Bible study tools like The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge are designed to help all Bible readers get more out of their Bible reading and Bible study.
  3. Parents can easily teach their children as part of their ongoing home education how to use The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge as they encourage their children to read and understand the Bible. I have found that children and young people can learn and understand way more than we often give them credit for!
  4. Parents who are fortunate enough to be able to home school their children can include learning how to study the Bible and how to use cross reference resources like The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge as part of that study.
  5. Pastors of churches should certainly be encouraging all under their spiritual care to read and study the Bible. A most important part of studying the Bible involves comparing Scripture with Scripture. It is well-known that Scripture is its own best interpreter. Cross reference Bible study using The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge may well be the best way to do this kind of Bible study.
  6. Sunday schools should offer Vacation Bible School programs on “How to Study the Bible” to classes for senior high school students. That is how I was introduced to the original Treasury of Scripture Knowledge. Unlike many other fads in our culture that have come and gone since I first learned about cross-reference Bible study nearly seven decades ago, this method of Bible study never goes out of date!
  7. It may well be possible that even younger students in late elementary and what used to be called junior high school can be taught to study the Bible using The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge.
  8. Every Christian will be far better grounded in their faith if they regularly study the Bible by means of cross-reference Bible study.
  9. A number of pastors have told me that even many pastors need to learn how to study the Bible using the cross references in The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge. Apparently, pastors are not taught this method of Bible study in Bible School or seminary. They can learn more about this method of Bible study right here on this site. Direct your pastor to this site and encourage him to read the oldest articles first where I delve into this matter of the importance of cross-reference Bible study.
  10. Make it a part of your outreach to others by sharing this site and the Bible study resource The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge with others. The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge is being made available in printed form once again. It is available for pre-order on Amazon right now, so search for it by author and title there. It is expected to be released in February, 2023.

The Story Behind the New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

PREFACE

I first learned of The Treasury of Scripture Knowledge in a vacation Bible school class on “How to Study the Bible” taught to senior high school students at the Highland Park Baptist Church by Miss Ellen Groh. Miss Groh was a student at the Detroit Bible College at the time and later went to the mission field. The pastor of Highland Park Baptist Church then was Dr. Lehman Strauss. That was the summer of 1955.

That Christmas my Aunt Ethel Sherwin sent me a Christmas card with a five-dollar bill. On December 24, 1955, I rode my bicycle four miles to the Grand Bible and Book Store in Highland Park and had Mr. Bob Humphries, the proprietor, locate a copy of the book for me. To this day I believe this Bible study tool was the best investment I have ever made for Bible study.

I was convinced that I needed to buy the book for myself when in Miss Groh’s class I looked up the encouraging references at 2 Timothy 1:7. During the years immediately after high school graduation, I used the volume as many as three hours a day in Bible study.

Over the years I have marked my copy of the Treasury, underlining particularly clear references, and noting printing errors as I found them. I added references to those already given in the Treasury in the wide margins of my study Bibles, as I prepared weekly Sunday school lessons over the years.

In the main reading room of the library at Bob Jones University I first saw Scott’s Commentary, and found this to be the primary source of the references in the Treasury. The Treasury has many additional references not found in Scott, though in some passages, such as Exodus 20, the reverse is true. I have since obtained several used editions of Scott’s Commentary. Many variations from Scott’s original references (over 4,000) and printing errors (nearly 1,000) present in the original edition of the Treasury have been corrected in this new edition by consulting this source.

This is the only new edition of The Treasury of Scripture Knowledge ever prepared. All previous editions are merely reprints of the original edition which first appeared about 1836. In my preparation of this new edition I have incorporated the results of my thirty years of personal Bible study using the original Treasury into this revised and expanded edition. I almost did not live to finish my editorial work on the New Treasury, for I was shot in the head by an unknown assailant on March 13, 1986, when I had typed the text only as far as 1 Samuel 3. The Lord miraculously spared my life. During my recovery I kept working on the book, often without income. This time away from teaching permitted a more thorough revision and expansion than I originally planned.

The most significant feature of the Treasury is its nearly exhaustive collection of cross-references. These references are the source of its enduring usefulness to every Bible student. Therefore it has been to the cross-references themselves that the greatest effort has been given in this new edition to make this excellent reference tool even more usable to the modern reader and student of the Bible. I have added over 100,000 new cross-references and supplied many more key words to the Bible text, making this the most complete collection of biblical cross-references ever published.

I am thankful to Miss Ellen Groh, Dr. Lehman Strauss, my Aunt Ethel, the proprietors of many Christian and secular bookstores, and to the present publisher for their encouragement to me in making this new volume possible. Of course, I must not neglect to mention the many hours of assistance in looking up cross-references, preparing and checking indexes, and proofreading provided by my wife, Susanne. In a volume of this size and magnitude it is impossible to produce an entirely error-free manuscript, I am sure, but every effort has been made to provide an accurate reference tool for personal Bible study.
