Daily Bible Nugget #289, Mark 7:13

The Nugget:

Mark 7:13 Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.

My Comment:

The wicked make the Scriptures of none effect through their traditions (The New Topical Textbook, subheading under the main heading “The Scriptures,” page 240).

Notice that in Mark 7:13 Jesus charged the religious leaders of His day with making the word of God of none effect through their tradition, which they delivered–that is, pronounced as authoritative. These religious leaders were the official teaching authority of their day in Israel.

There is a lesson to be learned here. Jesus boldly placed the authority of the Scripture over any supposed authority of tradition imposed or promulgated by the religious authorities.

Jesus never appealed to tradition as the basis for the authority behind anything He taught. Jesus commanded us to “search the Scriptures” (John 5:39), not Tradition!

From the outset of His ministry, Jesus demonstrated for us His use of Scripture to answer and resist the Devil during His forty days of the temptation in the wilderness (Matthew 4:3, 4; 4:5, 6, 7; 4:8, 9, 10). Jesus did not try to answer Satan by using Tradition. Jesus answered Satan by a direct appeal to the Bible.

I think the evidence in the Bible is very clear for anyone who will honestly read what it says with their eyes open. We are to go by the Bible alone and in its entirety. The New Topical Textbook is surely correct when it states, “The wicked make [the Scriptures] of none effect through their traditions (Mark 7:9-13).”

For those who desire to DIG DEEPER into this subject:
