Ken Sagely asked such a good question about this post that I thought the question and my answer should be shared more widely:

    Ken’s question is:

hello jerry enjoying your new posting from jn 6/44 you have the symbol fs184c listed i was wondering what that meant thank yu

Here is the answer I shared. It goes very deep into grammatical issues in the Greek text, but I trust that my explanation, if read carefully, will be fully understandable to the ordinary English reader:

    Dear Ken,

You ask a very good question.

I studied that out for a while last night before including it in the posted cross references, because the symbol FS184C was not originally included in the references in The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge for John 6:44. It belonged there, but for reasons now unknown to me, this instance was accidentally omitted. I discovered the omission in my further study of the subject.

This figure of speech, in this case a grammatical construction, is most clearly explained in my revised note (revised for greater clarity) at Matthew 4:9 in Nelson’s Cross Reference Guide to the Bible.

The SIGNIFICANCE of this grammatical construction used in John 6:44 is that this construction states CONTINGENCY, a most important concept conveyed in the Greek text but not adequately represented in any of our English translations.

The CONTINGENCY specified in John 6:44 is spelled out in the following SUBJUNCTIVE verb, “draw,” which MUST be translated MAY DRAW to properly represent the force of the SUBJUNCTIVE MOOD, a mood in grammar which specifies CONTINGENCY.

The CONTINGENCY is clearly stated in the immediately preceding context provided at John 6:40,

Joh 6:40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

Notice the expression “and believeth,” a CONDITION stated in the PRESENT TENSE, which is the specified CONDITION that must be fulfilled on our part to MEET THE CONTINGENCY thus specified in John 6:44.

Notice also the CONTINGENCY specified in John 6:40 in this cause/effect relationship verse: “may have everlasting life.” The “may” does not signify any doubt, but it does state CONTINGENCY.

Therefore, to receive the promised everlasting life, you must meet the contingency of continuing to believe on our Lord Jesus Christ.

    Returning to John 6:44,

Joh 6:44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

Notice in the KJV the expression “draw him.”

In the Greek text, “draw” is in the SUBJUNCTIVE MOOD, which specifies CONTINGENCY. The CONTINGENCY is, again, the requirement that we continue to believe on Christ for our salvation.

Properly translated into English, “draw” MUST in some manner be translated in the subjunctive mood in English, and can be so translated by rendering it to read “may draw.”

These grammatical FACTS present in the Greek text are undeniable.

Here is what they mean in terms of the Biblical theology to be properly derivable from these verses:

Logically, Calvinism cannot base absolute sovereignty and absolute predestination or the doctrine of irresistibility upon (or in the face of) the “may” of the subjunctive mood in the probable future third class condition in John 6:44, 65.

That would be an absolute contradiction in terms.

“May” expresses contingency; the “third class condition” expresses probability, but not certainty, because of the contingency.

The “third class condition” asserts that if a condition is met, a certain result will follow.

Thus, the Calvinistic position is proven to be absolutely untenable according to the grammar of Scripture.

No Calvinist would dare to ground their theology in the grammar of the Greek text of the New Testament!

Notice that Robert Young in his excellent Literal Translation of the Bible is very much aware of the requirements of Greek grammar, as seen in his translation of John 6:44,

    Joh 6:44 no one is able to come unto me, if the Father who sent me may not draw him, and I will raise him up in the last day;

I bet you would never have guessed that all this is specified by my enigmatic symbol FS184C!

psm 119/18 says “open thou mine eyes, that i may behold wondrous things out of thy law”. i am learning alot going through the xrfs listed from ntks. its helped to keep in mind the context of this passage. in ntsk the paragraph title for 6/30-59, “they demand a sign, like that of manna, and he speaks copiously of himself as the bread of life and of living by faith in him” here are some of the most helpful xrfs jn 12/37-40,37 but though he had done so many miracles b4 them, yet they believed not on him:38 that the saying of esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, lord who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the lord been revealed?39 therefore they could not believe, because that esaias said again,40 he hath hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, and be converted, and i should heal them. in i cor 2/14 but the natural man receiveth not the things of the spirit of god: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. in the gospel of john, 3/3 jesus answered and said unto him, verily, verily, i say unto thee, except a man be born again,he cannot see the kingdom of god. jn 5/40 and ye will not come to me,that ye might have life. jn 10/26 but ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as i said unto you. paul in ii co.4/6 for god,who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts,to five the light of the knowledge of the glory of god in the face of jesus christ. eph 2/8-9 for by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves:it is the gift of god:v9 not of works, lest any man should boast. col 2/12 buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of god,who had raised him from the dead.v13 and you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;. james says in 1/18 of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. paul in titus 3/3-5 for we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another. vs 4 but after that the kindness and love of god our saviour toward man appeared,vs 5 not by works of rightousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us,by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the holy ghost. there are only 2 ways of salvation either you work for it which we know from the scriptures no matter how hard he tries he cant save himself, but is only through faith in jesus christ 6/35 i am the bread of life and he that cometh to me shall never hunger:; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst!
