To really get into the Bible, it helps to learn about and adopt for ourselves the attitude some of the Bible writers themselves took toward God’s written word:

1. Joshua 1:8,

Joshua 1:8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

Comment: I like the emphasis in this verse about meditating or thinking about the Word of God night and day, daily.

2. Job 23:12,

Job 23:12 Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.

Comment: It looks to me like Job appreciated the Word of God as much or more than a good meal, perhaps a steak dinner!

3. Psalm 1:1, 2,

Psalm 1:1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

Psalm 1:2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

Comment: the writer, the Psalmist, speaks of delighting in the written word of God, and like a previous passage I cited, says the characteristic of the quality of person he describes in verse 1 is that such a person meditates or thinks upon God’s written word day and night.

4. Jeremiah 15:16,

Jer 15:16 Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts.

Comment: We would all be better for it if we could share the attitude that Jeremiah does when he speaks of his enjoyment of the written word of God in the words “thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart.”

These are some of my favorite verses. I hope they bring encouragement, motivation, and delight to at least some, but hopefully all of you.

</fb:like></fb:like>
