Daily Bible Nugget #96, Psalm 119:11

The Nugget:

Psalm 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

My Comment:

One way to hide God’s word in our hearts is to memorize it. If we have learned a Bible verse by heart we can recall the exact words and think about or meditate upon what it says. The Psalmist expressed a specific purpose for hiding God’s Word in his heart. He hid God’s word in his heart to keep himself from sinning against God. Now that is a life-changing idea. Recall that all these verses I have posted as “Daily Bible Nuggets” of late are from a much larger collection of verses that I first learned by heart as a new Christian. This specific list is what I shared with my high school Sunday school class. This list is good for anyone, and never goes out of date! Learning then sharing these verses is what I believe is needed to change some of the misguided trends in our culture and set people, young and old, on the right path. There is a power in God’s written Word that goes far beyond what any of us can imagine. This power needs to be unleashed. It is only unleashed when others get to hear or read these truths with interest for themselves. It is like what Paul said about the Gospel–He was not ashamed of the Gospel, for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone who believes it. But there is power in God’s written Word not only to save us, but to grow us, and to keep us from sin. Some people have written in the front of their personal Bibles the little saying, “This Book will keep you from sin, or sin will keep you from this Book.”

For those who desire to DIG DEEPER into this subject:

(1) Consult the cross references given in Nelson’s Cross Reference Guide to the Bible on page 627 for Psalm 119:11.

(2) Consult the cross references given in The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge on page 672 or in Logos 5 Bible software for Psalm 119:11.

(3) Lacking access to those two resources, consult the cross references for this passage as I have developed them as given below:
