Daily Bible Nugget #14, Zechariah 7:11

The Nugget:

Zec 7:11 But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear.

My Comment:

What ails both the Evangelical Church and the nation and world at large is specified in this verse. Are we really listening to God? He has clearly spoken to us in His Word, the Bible. Notice in Zechariah’s day the people refused to listen. They are doing the same thing today. Sports and entertainment are more important as measured by how and where people spend their time. How you spend your time identifies your priorities. In Zechariah’s day the people “pulled away the shoulder.” Perhaps we would say they “shrugged it off.” Who needs to read the Bible today? Whether in church, on Christian radio, or in the home, how much encouragement and instruction is being given as to how and why to read the Bible? Much church programming and Christian radio is devoted to teaching psychology instead of the Bible. In Zechariah’s day, the people “stopped their ears.” In our day, we may not be putting our fingers in our ears to avoid God’s message, but we certainly have been largely ensnared by the “lusts of other things entering in” (Mark 4:19). Our wrong priorities have about guaranteed that we have blocked God’s voice as found in His Word totally out of our lives. And that, in a nutshell, is our problem. The cure is obvious. Failure to address this problem in our lives and receive the cure will produce dire consequences. God delivered on the dire consequences in Zechariah’s day. He is delivering the consequences to us in our day too. Just read the context of today’s Daily Bible Nugget at Zechariah 7:11 in your own Bible. One consequence I’ll mention is specified in Zechariah 7:13. There, God warns if we won’t hear Him, when we pray, He won’t hear us, a very striking example of one of the reasons the Bible gives for unanswered prayer.

My Concern:

Doom and gloom are not inevitable. More people must become engaged in reading, studying, believing, and obeying the Bible. I sense that the number of people who do love the Bible and read, study, share, and teach it are few in number. The power of the Gospel is still available today. Paul wrote in Romans 1:16, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.” If we truly believe God and His written Word, we need to be daily unleashing this power for the benefit of those in our circle of contacts where God has placed us as He leads.
