Daily Bible Nugget #12, John 20:31

The Nugget

Joh 20:31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

My Comment:

Notice the beginning words, “But these are written.” They are in contrast to what John had just stated in the preceding verse, that there were many other things Jesus did in the presence of his disciples which “are not written in this book” (John 20:30). Some would have us understand that this means not all the truth we need to know about our Lord Jesus Christ and the Gospel message can be found in the Bible. On their part, this is a faulty inference indeed. John declares just the opposite. What he has written has been written so that upon reading this book of the Gospel of John, we might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. Now what is the outcome of believing this? Those who believe will have life through His name. Any one who will read the Gospel of John and believe it can know that they have eternal life as a result. This is a most important and powerful promise!

For those who wish to DIG DEEPER into this significant promise:

(1) Consult the cross references given in Nelson’s Cross Reference Guide to the Bible on page 1209.

(2) Consult the cross references given in The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge on page 1228 or in Logos 5 Bible software for John 20:31.

(3) Lacking access to those two resources, consult the cross references for this passage as I have developed them further given below:

One Response to Daily Bible Nugget #12, John 20:31

  1. ken sagely says:

jn 20,31 but these are written, that ye might believe that jesus is the christ, the son
of god; and that believing ye might have life through his name. 1. these are written.
several times in john emphasis on this phrase it is written. jn 1.46, in the law, and the prophets,
did write,jn 2.17 remembered that it was written, jn 5.46 have believed me; for he wrote of me. 2. that ye might believe that jesus is the christ, the son of god; there
are many scriptures that jesus christ is the son of god .its the theme of johns gospel. jn 1.49 nathanael answered and said unto him, rabbi, thou are the son of god; thou art the
king of israel. jn 6.67-69 then said jesus unto the twelve, will ye also go away? 67 then
simon peter answered him, lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal
life. 69 and we believe and are sure that thou art that christ, the son of the living god.
jn 9.35-38 jesus heard that they had cast him out: and when he had found him, he said unto him, dost thou believe on the son of god? vs36 he answered and said, who is
he, lord, that i might believe on him? vs 37 and jesus said unto him, thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee. vs 38 and he said, lord, i believe. and he
worshipped him.3.and that believing ye might have life through his name. believe is a key term
in john over 90 times believe is mentioned. jn 1.12 but as many as receieved him, to
them gave he power to become the sons of god, even to them that believe on his name; jn 2.11 this beginning of miracles did jesus in cana of galilee, and manifested forth his glory: and his disciples believed on him jn 2.22 when therefore he was risen
from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they
believed the scripture, and the word which jesus had said. jn 3.14-15 and as moses
lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the son of man be lifted up: vs 15 that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. jn 3.18 he that believeth on him is not condemned; but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten son of god.
jn 3.36 he that believeth on the son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the son shall not see life; but the wrath of god abideth on him. many more scriptures on believing on the son of god. our faith is only as good as its object. jesus christ the son of god of the born again is the object of faith to the believer. ” on christ the solid rock i stand all other ground is sinking sand!”
