Daily Bible Nugget #351, Hebrews 4:13

The Nugget:

Heb 4:13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

My Comment:

I have keyed the sixth attribute of God, the attribute of omniscience, to Hebrews 4:13. Simply put, God knows everything, past, present, and future. Some scholars have waxed philosophical and have argued God does not know the future free will choices of independent creatures such as man. That would mean that there are some things even God cannot know until after they happen. I have a problem with that kind of thinking. That would limit God, and God is not limited except only that He does nothing contrary to His character. If God does not know the totality of what is future, then how can He make very specific predictions with regard to prophecy like those recorded in the Bible?

Some would object that if God perfectly and fully knows the future as absolutely as He knows the past, then everything has been determined beforehand and there is no such thing as free will. I would answer that just because God knows the future, that does not mean he puts all of us in a straitjacket such that what we do could not be otherwise. God’s Word, the Bible, most clearly indicates that we have the capability and the responsibility of choice (Deuteronomy 30:19). It also declares in an interesting verse I first noticed particularly just today in my Bible study at Exodus 35:21 that what man wills to do is influenced by his inner character, his heart. We are not all pre-programmed robots who have no choice in how we respond to life and its opportunities; how we respond to what happens to us, and particularly, how we respond to God and to His written word in the Bible.
