WHAT CAN BE MORE IMPORTANT THAN VOTING? — BY DONNA GARNER — 10.21.14

[I do not think Mrs. Donna Garner will mind my posting her timely article here. She and I share a strong interest in the teaching of English. I know she loves the Bible, and fortunately bought for herself one of the last available printed copies of my book, The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge. I personally believe that God will hold each of us accountable on how we did or did not exercise our influence for Him. This includes choosing the lesser of two evils when that is the only responsible option we are given. In recent elections I have noticed it reported in the media that a great many Evangelical Christians failed to cast a vote. If all Christians had exercised their civic duty (“Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s…”) it is likely that better outcomes would have been experienced, considering how close these elections turned out to be.]

My husband and I always try to vote early so that if God calls us home before Voting Day, our votes will still be in the ballot box.

Remember that terrible elections have terrible consequences both here in the United States and even across the entire world. If we have not figured this out since the miserable elections of 2008 and 2012, we must figure this out now in 2014.

As a political strategist said on Sunday’s Meet the Press, “We have had a conga-line of screw-ups” under Obama.

Our family’s mantra: “When in doubt, vote Republican.” My husband and I realize that not all Republicans do the right thing, and we are frustrated with many of them. However, we have yet to see a Democrat who will LEAD OUT on conservative issues.

Democrats will occasionally cast a vote for a conservative bill, probably to increase their political base; but we have never seen them LEAD OUT on a conservative issue. When “push comes to shove,” Democrats are not going to LEAD OUT against their fellow Democrats!

What America must have is LEADERS who have the courage to bring America back from the edge of the cliff. We know we are perched right on the edge of the slippery slope as we see America’s influence decreasing in the world and as we see our society becoming more uncivil.

Elections can and do make a difference. The type of people we put into office determines the direction our country will take.

Now is the time that we can DO something that matters for years to come.

Nov. 4, 2014 is approaching quickly, and many states (including Texas) have already begun early voting.

What can be more important than voting?

  1. Jerry says:

More thoughts about why Christians must exercise their privilege to vote:

“When Christians don’t vote, the wrong people end up in positions of power and begin pushing a personal agenda to destroy religious freedom. Just look at the recent events in Houston, Lexington, New York and Coeur d’Alene, and you will find a very chilling fact.

These are four places that have passed laws which force Christians to either deny their faith or go to jail. Laws passed by people elected to power because Christians allowed it.” (from an October 22, 2014 emailing I received from the American Family Association)

Many years ago I asked an eleventh grade English class at Cass Technical High School a simple question: “What liberties do we have in the United States of America that people who now live in Cuba do not have?” The question was prompted by my observation that a student in that class was taking a trip to Cuba. No one in the class had an answer to my question. I reminded them that in this country we have a Bill of Rights containing the first ten amendments to the Constitution. Included in the Bill of Rights is the right to free speech and the right to religious freedom.

Those two rights, among others, are given to us by God Himself. They are not merely granted by the government.

The mayor of Houston, Texas, is a disgrace. She clearly has neither right nor standing to require pastors to submit their sermon notes, emails, and other communications to her. If she wants to learn what each pastor has to say, I’m sure she would be most welcome to attend on a regular basis the Sunday morning worship service and find out. That dear lady would have likely flunked had I taught a class in Civics and had she been in it. Well, not really. But you get the point. I did not fail students because they had a different opinion than me. But it sounds to me like the mayor of Houston needs to go to re-education school and be taught either once again or for the first time the principles that guided the writing of our founding documents.
