Daily Bible Nugget #222, Nehemiah 8:3

The Nugget:

Nehemiah 8:3 And he read therein before the street that was before the water gate from the morning until midday, before the men and the women, and those that could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law.

My Comment:

The Scriptures should be read publicly to all. This verse was mentioned often in the days of the Watergate scandal! But in terms of the topic being addressed, it is clear that the Scriptures were read publicly to all. The people listened attentively. There may have been fewer distractions then. We suffer from too many distractions in our day that take our attention away from the Bible. In Nehemiah’s day Ezra read the Bible aloud from morning to midday. I’ve been in churches where people grew listless if the pastor went one or two minutes or so beyond the usual or expected time for the sermon to end. I read an article recently that suggested that few people today are comfortable with “deep reading.” The writer suggested that people today flit from one website to another on the Internet, and rarely read something for more than three minutes or so, and then they skim over the material, not reading all that is there. The writer said she found herself in that mode of reading, and when she needed to do serious reading and research, she had to avoid the distractions and settle down to do only serious reading. She said it took her a couple of weeks to get back in the groove or habit of sustained reading. The people who heard the Bible read aloud from morning until midday must have been very attentive listeners. We need to practice serious listening and sustained reading of the Bible ourselves.
